One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan. -

This is my twenty-third session with Gov. Jim Edgar. Good afternoon, Governor. Edgar: Good afternoon. DePue: We’ve been at it for a little while, but it’s been a fascinating series of discussions. We are now getting close to the time when we can wrap up your administration. So without further ado in terms of the introduction, what we finished off last time was the MSI discussion. That puts us in the 1997 timeframe, into 1998. I wanted to start, though, with talking about some things in Historic Preservation. Obviously, with myself and our institution— Edgar: Let me ask you a question real quick. Did we do higher education reorganization? DePue: Oh yes. Edgar: We did? Okay. DePue: We did. Spell For Chameleon – Xanth 01 By Piers Anthony Chapter 1. Xanth A small lizard perched on a brown stone. Feeling threatened by the approach of human beings along the path, it metamorphosed into a stingray beetle, then into a stench-puffer, then into a fiery salamander. Bink smiled. These conversions weren't real. It had assumed the forms of obnoxious little monsters, but not their essence. It could not sting, stink, or bum. It was a chameleon, using its magic to mimic creatures of genuine threat. Yet as it shifted into the form of a basilisk it glared at him with such ferocity that Bink's mirth abated. If its malice could strike him, he would be horribly dead. Then abruptly a silent moth hawk swooped down from the sky and caught the chameleon in its beak. There was a thin scream of anguish as the lizard convulsed; then it dangled limply as the hawk ascended. The chameleon, despite all its pretensions, was dead. Even while trying to threaten Bink it had been destroyed by another agency. Page 1 This retaliation continued to percolate through Bink's emotion. The chameleon was harmless - but most of untamed Xanth was not. Was this some twisted omen, a small suggestion of a dire fate awaiting him? Omens were serious business; they always came true, but usually were misinterpreted until too late. Was Bink fated to die brutally---or was some enemy of his? He had, so far as he knew, no enemies. The golden sun of Xanth - shone through the magic shield, striking sparkles from the trees. -

A Slightly Predictable Stock Market Is There Enough Reliable Information to Avoid Market Downturns? Blair Hull, Hull Investments, LLC February 1, 2013 Summary Over the past three years the author funded a research project to determine whether a diligent investor could avoid stock market downturns.Experience at the blackjack table suggestedthat a small amount of informationcould lead to superior returns. But the blackjack problem had since become well known and is almost trivial compared to the vast casino called the stock market.There were two research principles for “Avoiding 2008,” as the project was known within the author’s company. First, rely on research by academics and market professionals as much as possible. Second, use statistical research and simulation techniques designed to minimize the problem of hindsight bias.The author concluded that information can indeed be combined in an optimal way to achieve risk adjusted returns superior to those of a buy‐ and‐hold investor. _____________ Blair Hull founded Hull Trading Company in 1985 and served as the firm’s chairman and chief executive officer before selling it to Goldman Sachs in 1999. Hull went on to found Matlock Capital, and is now founder and managing partner of Ketchum Trading, LLC, a proprietary trading firm that trades and provides liquidity in futures, options, cash equities and exchange traded funds. He also manages his family office, Hull Investments, LLC. My experience at the Blackjack table provides an example of successful investing in a slightly predictable market, where a talented player can expect at most a three percent advantage (51.5% win probability versus a 48.5% probability of loss). -

Maria Camila Camacho Garrido How Does Hip Hop Serve as a Catalyst for Collective Resistance? “Fight the Power” – a Beats, Rhymes, & Life Approach ABSTRACT This qualitative study explores what elements of social justice, Hip Hop, and therapy the Oakland, California based agency Beats, Rhymes, & Life, Inc. (BRL) engages in to ignite Collective Resistance among its members, youth, and the outside community. The study utilized a mix of both narrative and phenomenological approaches throughout. In total, twelve participants were interviewed, however, only six participants were included for the purpose of this research and ranged from teaching artists, clinicians, community members, and leaders of BRL. Each participant was asked a series of questions regarding (1) Hip Hop, (2) Oppression and Power, and (3) Collective Resistance along with exploring the role BRL plays throughout those spaces. -
