A film by Angad Singh Bhalla 81 minutes, Canada/USA, 5.1 Surround or 2.0 Stereo, Blu-Ray, HDCAM, ProRes, DVD available for exhibition FIRST RUN FEATURES The Film Center Building 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] www.firstrunfeatures.com/hermanshouse Full Synopsis The injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative power of art are explored in Herman’s House, a feature documentary that follows the unlikely friendship between a New York-born artist and one of America’s most famous inmates as they collaborate on an acclaimed art project. In 1972, New Orleans native Herman Joshua Wallace (b. 1941) was serving a 25-year sentence for bank robbery when he was accused of murdering an Angola Prison guard and thrown into solitary confinement. Many believed him wrongfully convicted. Appeals were made but Herman remained in jail and—to increasingly widespread outrage—in solitary. Years passed with one day much like the next. Then in 2001 Herman received a perspective- shifting letter from a Jackie Sumell, a young art student, who posed the provocative question: “What kind of house does a man who has lived in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?” Thus began an inspired creative dialogue, unfolding over hundreds of letters and phone calls and yielding a multi-faceted collaborative project that includes the exhibition “The House That Herman Built.” The revelatory art installation—featuring a full-scale wooden model of Herman’s cell and detailed plans of his dream home—has brought thousands of gallery visitors around the world face-to-face with the harsh realities of the American prison system.

  • The Balkans of the Balkans: the Meaning of Autobalkanism in Regional Popular Music
arts Article The Balkans of the Balkans: The Meaning of Autobalkanism in Regional Popular Music Marija Dumni´cVilotijevi´c Institute of Musicology, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia; [email protected] Received: 1 April 2020; Accepted: 1 June 2020; Published: 16 June 2020 Abstract: In this article, I discuss the use of the term “Balkan” in the regional popular music. In this context, Balkan popular music is contemporary popular folk music produced in the countries of the Balkans and intended for the Balkan markets (specifically, the people in the Western Balkans and diaspora communities). After the global success of “Balkan music” in the world music scene, this term influenced the cultures in the Balkans itself; however, interestingly, in the Balkans themselves “Balkan music” does not only refer to the musical characteristics of this genre—namely, it can also be applied music that derives from the genre of the “newly-composed folk music”, which is well known in the Western Balkans. The most important legacy of “Balkan” world music is the discourse on Balkan stereotypes, hence this article will reveal new aspects of autobalkanism in music. This research starts from several questions: where is “the Balkans” which is mentioned in these songs actually situated; what is the meaning of the term “Balkan” used for the audience from the Balkans; and, what are musical characteristics of the genre called trepfolk? Special focus will be on the post-Yugoslav market in the twenty-first century, with particular examples in Serbian language (as well as Bosnian and Croatian). Keywords: Balkan; popular folk music; trepfolk; autobalkanism 1.

  • Dehexing Postwar West Balkan Masculinities: the Case of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, 1998 to 2015 Marko Dumancic, Western Kentucky University
Western Kentucky University From the SelectedWorks of Marko Dumančić January 12, 2016 Dehexing Postwar West Balkan Masculinities: The Case of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, 1998 to 2015 Marko Dumancic, Western Kentucky University Available at: https://works.bepress.com/marko-dumancic/3/ The analysis of post-Yugoslav and West Balkan masculinities remains, perhaps unsurprisingly, tethered to the study of interethnic warfare, postconflict reconciliation, and radical right-wing politics (Milojevic´ 2012; Pavlovic´ 1999; Irvine and Lilly 2007; Bracewell 2000; Hayden 2000; Munn 2008).1 Although recent scholarship has explored more fully the position of men who do not benefit from the so-called patriarchal dividend (Milicevic´ 2006; Zarkov 2001), West Balkan men are by and large studied as participants (whether active or passive) in a range of oppressive sociopolitical structures (Capriqi 2012; Rosic´ 2012). Although the scholarship analyzing the correlation between violence and West Balkan masculinity adds a unique and relevant nuance to the study of globalized violence, scholars too often study and depict traditional Balkan masculinities as an exclusively conservative bulwark against modernization writ large without advancing alternative understandings of West Balkan masculinity.2 For the local intelligentsia and urban media outlets too, Balkan masculinity represents forces of isolationism and exclusivist ethno-nationalism, especially in the context of European integration. If one were to judge by current Bosnian, Croatian, or Serbian media commentary, the West Balkans are, no less than they were a hundred years ago, at the crossroads between traditionalization and modernization, with the patriarchal system actively sabotaging modernity’s successful evolution in the region. Thus in both Western scholarship and West Balkan media outlets, masculine identities stand in for antimodern forces: backwardness, parochialism, and (neo-) traditionalism.

P a g e | 1 1 Thessalonians 1:6-10 Their Good Example Good morning, church. It is wonderful to be here with you all this morning. This morning we will continue our study of first Thessalonians, we will finish chapter 1. If you do not have a Bible this morning, there are some in the Pews in front of you, please grab one. If you do not have a Bible at home, please take one of those Bibles home. Last week we ended our time together in verse 5 of the first chapter, where Paul speaking to the church of the Thessalonians says… 1 Thess. 1:5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. P a g e | 2 Paul calls the reader in Thessalonica to remember the gospel that he and his associates Silas and Timothy brought with them into their city. How this message of Jesus of Nazareth dying in their place for their sins and was only One Way to Salvation and into a relationship with God Almighty. Paul reminds them that their gospel was not in Word only but it also came in Power, with the Holy Spirit, and with much assurance. As each Jew and Gentile took by faith the message that Paul, Silas and Timothy preached, the Holy Spirit immediately filled each believer with His Power. Their eyes were open and they immediately saw the deception that they were in bondage too, and the Truth set them free, and their New Lives brought them much assurance.

  • Far-Right Trends in South Eastern Europe: the Influences of Russia, Croatia, Serbia and Albania
HCSS Security Far-Right Trends in South Eastern Europe: The Influences of Russia, Croatia, Serbia and Albania Dr. Arlinda Rrustemi The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies 1 Far-Right Trends in South Eastern Europe: The Influences of Russia, Croatia, Serbia and Albania Introduction In the last few years, violent extremist trends have been researched in South-Eastern Europe (SEE) incorporating Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia from the various perspectives of risks, links to organized crime, community resilience, and drivers for disengagement and resilience (British Council 2019); (Perry 2019);(Petrović and Stakić 2018); (CeSID and USAID 2016); (Bakic 2013); (QKSS); (Analytica.); (Selimi and Stojkovski 2016). It is striking though that most of the research focuses on religious violent extremism, mainly Islamic, rather than far-right and/or ethno-national violent extremism. So far, in-depth analysis of the phenomena has been limited (Kelly 2019). Some interviewees confirm the former points that the international community focuses more on religious radicalization and external influencers in the region. Meanwhile, they also point out that local contexts show challenges deriving from local elites who use nationalism and religion for their own purposes and are sometimes assisted by mother states or external actors (Several Anonymous Interviews, International Officials and Local Officials, 2017- 2019, Western Balkans). This paper explores previously under-researched trends in SEE’s far right movements. It attempts to answer the following questions: which countries are most affected by the far-right? What are the main drivers? How does this impact the discussions on the EU and NATO membership? This paper uses violent extremism as the framework as it is a less biased and globally accepted term used by the United Nations member states.
