This year's festival will showcase downtown Jacksonville with unforgettable performances on Main Street, Hemming Plaza, Snyder Memorial Church, The Jacksonville Landing, Riverside Arts Market, and The Florida Theatre. Our city's enthusiasm for jazz and the arts is apparent in this year's fabulous lineup, special activities and exhibits. There is something for everyone to enjoy. The Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition kicks off the festival at The Florida Theatre on May 27. Other highlights include the Art in the Heart Downtown juried art show and sale, along with the Wine Down Tasting Experience and Sunday Jazz Brunches. The Omni Jacksonville Hotel will keep the sounds of jazz jamming until the early morning hours at the 'Round·Midnight Jazz Jam. Again, welcome to this year's Jacksonville Jazz Festival. I hope you, your family and friends have a wonderful time experiencing music and the arts in downtown and I encourage you to revel in the cultural richness of our city. John Peyton Mayor 2 Thursday, May 27 The Florida Theatre The Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition Presented by the City ofJacks onville and Keyboard Connection Pianos & Organs 7 p.m. (Doors open at 6 p.m.) • Master of Ceremonies, Noel Freid line • Finalists Performances • Intermission (15 minutes) • Finalists Performances • Performance by Noel Freidline and Renee Ebalaroza with the Rhythm Section • Announcement of winners by Jack Melvin of Keyboard Connection Pianos & Organs Masterof Ceremonies, Noel Freidline Noel Freid line, of Las Vegas, Nevada, is a graduate of the University of North Florida and is known as a talented pianist, vocalist, writer, arranger and band leader of his namesake band, The Noel Freidline Quintet. Freidline has been named as Northeast Florida's Best Performer six times. He returns to Jacksonville as Master of Ceremonies for the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and will perform on the Breezin' Stage on Saturday, May 29 and Sacred Jazz in the Old Church with the Jacksonville Mass Choir on Sunday, May 30. The Rhythm Section Dennis Marks, an accomplished bassist and educator, and Danny Gottlieb, a renowned drummer and educator, will provide accompaniment for the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. Special thanks to Keyboard Connection Pianos & Organs for providing a YAMA HA concert grand piano for the finalists' performances. Jacksonville Jazz festival 2010 The Judges LYNNE ARRIALE Lynne Arriale has developed a singular voice as a composer, leader, arranger and pianist. Lynne has captivated fans and critics alike with her expressive passion and melodic virtuosity, which earned her first place at the 1993 Great American Jazz Piano Competition. Her latest album, Nuance features compelling new originals and reinventions of pop classics, jazz and world music. Arriale recently returned from a six country European tour with the Nuance group featuring Randy Brecker, George Mraz and Anthony Pinciotti. She continues to perform at prestigious venues and festivals throughout the world and is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano and Director of Small Ensembles at The University of North Florida. Arriale also conducts master classes, clinics and workshops for professionals, students and communities. RICH RIDENOUR Rich Ridenour has built a formidable career performing concerts of great piano favorites ranging from classical masterworks to American ragtime, jazz and rock and roll. Recent symphony engagements include Bravissimo Festival of Guatemala City, Ocean City, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Tucson, Paducah, Jacksonville, Cleveland Pops and more. Rich has also instructed piano at Aquinas College, Grand Valley State University, Calvin College and Western Michigan University. His interest in music outreach and the development of musically aspiring youth led him to co-find the Grand Rapids Musicians' League. He also created the Keller Cooler Music Series in Grand Rapids, Michigan and served as Education Director for the Gilmore Keyboard Festival. Rich received a Bachelor's degree in music from the University of Michigan and a Master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music. His teachers include Louis Nagel, Josef Raieff, William Balcom, Eugene Bossart, Ruth Hemmes, among others. SCOTT GIDDENS Scott Giddens is featured on several critically renowned UNF big band CDs and has been heard backing such luminaries as Harry "Sweets" Edison, Maceo Parker, Ira Sullivan, Bunky Green, Vincent Herring, Andreas Oberg, Nathan Page, John Pizzarelli, and Ricky Skaggs among others. He has played in major venues all over the United States, Russia, Australia, and France. He has been featured in many festivals including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Mobile Jazz Festival, Savannah Jazz Festival, Clearwater Jazz Festival, Cocoa Beach Jazz Festival, and the North Sea Jazz Festival, in The Hague, Netherlands. He is currently the head of the New Life Christian Fellowship music department. In addition, Giddens is also the Professor of Jazz Piano at Jacksonville University; giving him the opportunity to reinvest his knowledge and experience into the next generation. Giddens maintains a busy performance schedule and can be seen touring all over the Southeast United States with his own trio. 4 The Finalists LAURA CAVIANI, St. Paul, MS Laura Caviani has toured and recorded worldwide and her recordings have received praise from jazz critics and publications including Jazz Times Magazine and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She has appeared on three Karrin Allyson releases on Concord Records and has toured with the Grammy-nominated singer. She has also performed with Toots Thielemans, Diane Schuur, Oleta Adams and Stan Getz. Caviani holds a Bachelors of Music from Lawrence University and a Masters of Music from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. As a dedicated educator, she is currently on faculty at Carleton College and St. Olaf College, and also teaches courses at McNally Smith College in downtown St. Paul. Max Haymer was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He was introduced to jazz piano at age 14 and he received his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of California at Irvine. Haymer was a finalist in the 2009 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Compettion and has placed in a variety of other piano competitions. In 2008, Haymer released his debut album Pickpocket Witness which includes his original compositions. He has also served as Musical Director for the Music Theatre of Connecticut. Haymer now lives in New York City and continues to compose music and perform at local venues. HUKWU, Washington, D.C. Hope Nwachukwu began playing piano at age 6 but his passion for music began when he moved to Nigeria at age 9 and was first introduced to jazz by his uncle. He moved back to the United States and began formal jazz studies in 2003 at Prince George's Community College. With influences in many musical styles, he has performed at Washington, D.C. venues including the Kennedy Center, The Lincoln Theatre and has performed alongside Raul Mascarenhas, Jonathan Carroll, Brian McKnight and Christina McBride. He resides in Washington, D.C. where he currently works as a musician and teacher. Donald Vega came to the United States from Nicaragua at age 15 without speaking English and suffered health problems that affected his musical future. He practiced on a makeshift cardboard piano before capturing the attention of Henry Mancini and jazz critic Leonard Feather after winning the Los Angeles Spotlight Awards competition. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California and a Masters of Arts from the Manhattan School of Music. Vega was runner-up in the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition in the mid-1990's and in 2007. His debut album, Tomorrows, was released in 2008 and includes six original songs. He resides in New York where he recently completed his studies at Julliard School and he continues to perform throughout the world including jazz festivals and popular venues. ABE, New York, NY Mamiko Watanabe was born in Fukuoka, Japan and began studying piano at age 4 at the Yamaha Music School. In 1999, she received a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music where she received several awards for Jazz Piano and Composition. She was also a semi-finalist at the prestigious Montreax Jazz Festival. She has toured Germany, Italy and Japan and has performed with jazz greats such as Joe Lavano, Kevin Mahogany and Bobby McFerrin while in college. After moving to New York, she performed at notable venues including The Kitano Hotel. Blue Note, The Knitting Factory and more. She recorded her debut album, One After Another, in 2005 and her second album, Origin/ Jewel in 2007, which is a collection of funk, Latin and straight-ahead compositions in a jazz piano trio format.
