PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Electric Light Orchestra – Secret
Dass ELO in Sachen Doppelalben ein gutes Standing hatten, hatte bereits „Out Of The Blue“ eindrucksvoll bewiesen. Dan Hicks’ Caucasian Hip-Hop For Hicksters Published February 19, 2015 | Copyright @2015 Straight Ahead Media Author: Steve Roby Showdate : Feb. 18, 2015 Performance Venue : Yoshi’s Oakland Bay Area legend Dan Hicks performed to a sold-out crowd at Yoshi’s on Wednesday. The audience was made up of his loyal fans (Hicksters) who probably first heard his music on KSAN, Jive 95, back in 1969. At age 11, Hicks started out as a drummer, and was heavily influenced by jazz and Dixieland music, often playing dances at the VFW. During the folk revival of the ‘60s, he picked up a guitar, and would go to hootenannies while attending San Francisco State. Hicks began writing songs, an eclectic mix of Western swing, folk, jazz, and blues, and eventually formed Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks. His offbeat humor filtered its way into his stage act. Today, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Hicks sums up his special genre as “Caucasian hip-hop.” Over four decades later, Hicks still delivers a unique performance, and Wednesday’s show was jammed with many great moments. One of the evenings highlights was the classic “I Scare Myself,” which Hicks is still unclear if it’s a love song when he wrote it back in 1969. “I was either in love, or I’d just eaten a big hashish brownie,” recalled Hicks. Adding to the song’s paranoia theme, back-up singers Daria and Roberta Donnay dawned dark shades while Benito Cortez played a chilling violin solo complete with creepy horror movie sound effects.

Ray and Saliers have carved out an enduring career that contributor Andreac. is due largely to the fierce loyalty of their fans, many of them lesbians. Ray, a native Atlantan, and Saliers, a transplant from Connecticut, met in grade school in Atlanta and became friends. They shared a talent for writing and music and began playing together in Ray's parents' basement. During college at Emory University, they played club dates in and around Atlanta as the "B Band" and later "Saliers and Ray," developing their following and reputation as a particularly strong band in live performance. Beginning in 1981 they released several independent records on tape and in 1985 released a vinyl single, "Crazy Game." That same year Ray selected the name Indigo Girls on "sort of a whim," she explained in an interview years later. "I found it in the dictionary . it's a deep blue, a root--real earthy." The duo signed with Epic Records in 1988. Their first record for Epic, the multi-platinum Indigo Girls, included their best-known song, "Closer to Fine." That year they were nominated for two Grammy awards-- Best New Artist (they narrowly lost to Milli Vanilli) and Best Contemporary Folk Album, which they won.
