One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

Thank you for your love and encouragement. Three Articulations of The Sweet Hereafter 3 Abstract The repetition of the title The Sweet Hereafter for novel (1991), film/DVD (1997/1998) and book chapter (2004) is suggestive of the slippages between them. The research traces the intermedial transitions of the TSH through three articulations to demonstrate how the texts subvert the temporal hierarchy posited by the notion of ‘fidelity’ in adaptation studies. The concepts of ‘original’ and “derivatives” are replaced by an intertextual simultaneity that posits the novelist and the auteur as co-authors of The Sweet Hereafter text. The first section of this RP considers the process of adaptation of the novel into film and draws on the highly self-reflexive dialogue between novelist and writer/director included on TSH DVD (1998). The second section of this RP traces how the ideas from the DVD discussion are reoriented through a collaboration on a book chapter which deconstructs the interplay of the visual and verbal as they work on screen. Fowgra/ie 1111d Film 105 Jonathan Romney: Atom Egoyan London: BFI Publishing 2003, 226 S., ISBN 0-85170-877-3. f 13.99 Jonathan Romney has \Hitten a comprehensive study on the work of director Atom Egoyan, the Egyptian born Armenian who grew up and lives in Canada. Egoyan came to prominence at the beginning of the 90s \\ ith such films as The Adjuster (1991), and Exotica (1994) which won the International Critic's Prize at Cannes Film Festiml. His enigmatic films revolve around issues of identity and ways of looking. He uses video within his films as a tool to embody consciousness. Up to Calendar ( 1993) characters primarily channel their investigation of the selfthrough an analysis ofvideo which „functions as a figure for psychic proces ses" (p.53). Characters often attempt to transform their own fate by narrating it. However, the emotional coldness shown between them and the ambiguous endings do not always make for simple viewing and trite analysis. Romney·s task has to take the fact into consideration that the director himself has spoken frequently and perceptively about his own \\ork. For Egoyan „dismantling its mystique and revealing the workings" (p.14) is integral to such seif-reflexive film-making. lt is another debate whether an artist is thc best person to critique his own work but many of Romney's conclusions are similar to those of Egoyan himself and there is the doubt that the author has been unable to make a totally independent assessment of the director's work. Having said that, Romney is a competent and enthusiastic guide through Egoyan ·s films. -
