Emerging powers are contributing to the changing power dynamics by competing to increase the influence they have in political, economic, and security spheres. Africa is one of the key spaces where such strategic efforts have been taking place. In such a context, this paper assesses key drivers of emerging powers’ growing engagement in Africa, makes some comparisons of the roles they have played during the pandemic, and discusses how this may affect their future relationships with African countries. While some media groups have been established for a number of years, the growth in French activity in the African market in the last two years is driven by a definite «Afro-optimism».     JUNE 2020 COVID-19 Impact on West African CRU Policy Brief Value Chains Countries in West Africa were quick to take strong prevention and mitigation measures to stem the spread of COVID-19. But border closure, curfew, market closure and limited internal movement already impact key value chains in the region and threaten livelihoods. It risks lowering decent working conditions and labour rights and increasing child labour and gender violence. Informal, migrant and female workers are especially at risk and are likely to take the brunt of the economic downturn. Disruptions in the food value chain also endangers food security in the region. Instability in West Africa threatens both European and Dutch economic, security and geopolitical interests. By virtue of being involved in various West African value chains, European and Dutch consumers and companies bear both leverage and responsibilities in regard to secure livelihoods, good working conditions free of gender violence and respect for labour rights in West Africa. The 5th Affluent Survey Africa, released by Ipsos on September 13th, revealed: • Despite internet penetration in the continent lagging behind other regions of the world, Africa’s Affluent population have embraced digital technology more rapidly than their European counterparts: many more of them are watching TV on their tablets, computers and smartphones and more of them read their newspapers digitally. • International TV channels now enjoy a higher reach amongst the Affluent population than national channels • Social media is now considered the first port of call for news amongst a substantial proportion of the Affluent population The biennial study measures the media use and consumption behaviour of the top 15% of income earners in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.
