2019 National Trophy Rifle Matches Results Camp Perry, Ohio Camp Perry Opens National Matches with Resounding First Shot By Craig Shoup, Fremont News-Messenger ERIE TOWNSHIP - Cris Stone, vice chair for the Civilian Marksman- ship Program at Camp Perry, said there are three “ping” sounds that link Camp Perry, Augusta, Georgia, and Omaha, Nebraska. Stone, who opened the national competition matches at Camp Perry on Monday with the traditional First Shot Ceremony, said everyone is probably familiar with the ping a baseball makes off a metal bat during the College Baseball World Series. Some are familiar with the ping sound a golf ball makes off a metal club at August National Golf Course, home of the Masters golf tournament. “But the ping of an aluminum bat is not nearly the authoritative and Mr. Cris Stone, Vice Chair, CMP Board of Directors and long-time competitor and CMP supporter resonant ping of a clip being ejected fired the official First Shot of the 2019 National Matches at Camp Perry. out of an M-1 rifle,” said Stone. Nothing sounds quite like the boom coming from a rifle sending a piece of lead barreling several hun- dred yards away at a speed of hundreds of feet per second. “There are only a few places known only by their locations rather than what happens there,” said Stone. “And that’s because of their history. “College baseball players talk about the road to Omaha, or they say, ‘If we win this one we can go to Omaha,’” stone continued. “These places are famous destinations, because of the greatness of what has happened there.” Continued on Page 123 SFC Dana Bowman, a former U.S. Army Golden Knights skydiver and double-amputee, gracefully paraglided into the First Shot cer- emony by plane with a 60-foot American flag in tow.
