W.A. 6000 IAML (AUSTRALIAN BRANCH) ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1986 Our major event for 1986 was the conference held with IASA (Australian Branch) in May in (Laurel Garlick reported on this in the November 1986 issue). During the months prior to the conference, a good deal of time was spent by IAML and IASA executive members and by our Victorian colleagues in organising it. The conference was well received by delegates and it is hoped that another joint meeting will be possible in the future. Another notable achievement for 1986 was the publication of the Union Catalogue of Music Serials in Victorian Libraries, 1985, compiled and edited by Jacqueline Bourne on behalf of the Victorian Division. I believe that documentation projects like this should be an ever-increasing part of our branch effort, and on its behalf, I would like to congratulate Jackie on this publication. In April, our annual submission was made to the Music Board of the Australia Council. For 1987 we requested funding for a branch delegate to the IAMUIASA Conference in Amsterdam, and for funds to continue data collection for the orchestral union catalogue in New South Wales. The first was unsuccessful, but we were granted $12,000 towards the data collection project. Sue Maddrell from the Research Team began work on Sydney collections later in 1986. Prue Neidorf and Ian Miller attended the IAMUIASA Conference in Stockholm, and a report from Prue appeared in the November 1986 issue. Another Victorian member, Lina Marsi, completed an index to The Australian Musical News in 1986, and our branch is planning to publish the index later in 1987. At the end of 1986, our membership stood at 29 institutional and 44 personal members.

IAML (AUSTRALIAN BRANCH) NEW SOUTH WALES DIVISION ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1986

Two meetings were held in 1986, one at the Australia Music Centre in March, the other at the New South Wales State ConseNatorium in November.· In May a number of delegates attended the national IAMUIASA Conference in Melbourne. Paul Bentley presented a paper on the history of the theatre and concert program at this conference. The main preoccupation for the year was the Union Catalogue of Orchestral Performing Sets (UCOPSJ. A sum of $5,000 had been granted by the Australia Council to facilitate the collection of data on orchestral holdings in Sydney collections. Accordingly, questionnaires were sent to sixteen institutions and orchestras in Sydney as well as to the Sydney Youth Orchestra Association, representing an additional thirty-two orchestras throughout New South Wales. A favourable response was received from four of the organisations and from the Sydney Youth Orchestra Association. Sue Maddrell of the Research Team Pty Ltd was engaged to work on the project, commencing with holdings of the New South Wales ConseNatorium Library. This work will continue in 1987, when the collection of data in Sydney will be completed and work will begin on NSW country holdings. The Australia Council has made available a further $12,000 for this purpose. Paul Bentley carried out preliminary investigations into the feasibility of holding an international IAMUIASA meeting in Australia in 1988 or 1990. 1988 was rejected, and responsibility for pursuing proposals for a meeting in 1990 was taken over by Bruce Skilton of the National Film and Sound Archive. In individual libraries, it was noses to the ground. The Australia Music Centre moved from The Rocks to Broadway. The New South Wales State Conservatorium Library moved further into the twentieth century by exploring the possibility of joining CLANN. The State Library focused attention on its new building extension (to open in 1988) and the URICA automation system. The Sydney Opera House Library also received a report containing recommendations on automating various sections of its operations. In addition, it carried out a major review of its press clippings service and completed thirty interviews in its oral history project relating to the Sydney Opera House. A further forty-five interviews are planned. In 1986, music acquisitions at the Sydney Opera House included: John lemmone manuscript letters, 1910, re the Melba tour of Australia; Australia Music Centre press clippings and photograph files re Australian music (25 boxes); a scrapbook, 1878-1880, containing handbills and concert program·, re the Lyster Company, Alice Charbonnet, Amy Sherwin, Rosina Carandini and others; and an Elizabeth Allen scrapbook, c.1944-1946 (300p,)

IAML (AUSTRALIAN BRANCH) VICTORIAN DIVISION ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1986

The IAMUIASA Conference was held in May. Finalisation of arrangements for the conference took up most of the early part of the year. Members of the Conference Committee, Joyce McGrath, Ian Miller and Jackie Bourne, met with the !ASA Conference Committee representatives on several occasions. The Melbourne conference was successful and attended by Victorian members who enjoyed the interchange with their counterparts from interstate and with members of !ASA. At the Annual General Meeting held on 18th May, Jackie Bourne took over from Joyce McGrath as Victorian representative of IAML; Joyce retains her position as Chairperson of RIDIM (Australia). The Union Catalogue of Music Serials in Victorian Libraries, 1985, was published by Monash University in February. During the latter part of the year meetings were held in September and October, with the December meeting cancelled due to lack of attendance. The IAMUIASA Stockholm Conference was attended by Ian Miller in August, and he gave a thorough and interesting report on activities at our September meeting. Work on the Victorian Union Catalogue of Orchestral Performance Sets was begun and discussion of format was the focus of our October meeting. This project is under the direction of Margaret Green from the University of Melbourne. The profile on Victorian music libraries and collections for the May 1987 edition of Continua was commenced.

IAML (AUSTRALIAN BRANCH) QUEENSLAND DIVISION ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1986

Membership of the Queensland branch was seven at the beginning of the year but dwindled to four as the year progressed. Two members resigned owing to• changes in work and one moved interstate. It was hoped to have several meetings to discuss matters arising out of the Melbourne conference, but tnese did not eventuate owing to the expectation that a quorum would not be present.

2 It was nevertheless a matter of some congratulation that four members of the branch were able lo attend the Melbourne conference, all of whom judged it to be an interesting and stimulating experience.

IAML (AUSTRALIAN BRANCH) WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DIVISION ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1986

Despite intentions to hold a meeting at the Conservatorium of Music in 1986, no meeting was arranged due to pressures of work. All major music libraries in Western Australia are now accessing their music collections using the URICA Library System. The Central Music Library has been using this system for a number of years and the University of Western Australia and the W.A. College of Advanced Education have recently acquired the system and are sharing facilities. This has led to information discussions and sharing information about acquiring retrospective records and training. The Central Music Library has recently received two large donations. The first was the Eleanor Litterick Collection of approximately 30,000 popular songs, and the second was the collection of the late Bill Piggott of 78rpm recordings. Both collections are being indexed and sorted.

NOTES AND NEWS

As mentioned in the NSW Division report, the NSW Conservatorium has joined the CLANN cataloguing network. Although the Library is awaiting hardware, training and batching of entries has begun.

Dick Letts has been appointed Executive Director of the Australia Music Centre. The Centre is carrying out a review of its operations and is also considering options in creating an automated database. Sue Tronser, with Vincent Plush as consultant, is in charge of international promotions.

The State Library of New South Wales has appointed a Collections Development Librarian and will shortly be publishing its collection development policy, including policy on music materials. Russell Doust has retired as State Librarian. Transfer of materials to the new building will commence in May and will continue over a period of nine months.

5 The National Library has recently carried out a review of its operations and staffing structure. Recommendations are expected in the near future. The task force responsible for the cataloguing of Australiana has completed processing piano music and is now feeding into ABN instrumental music and vocal music by single composers. The Music Section has been compiling a card index to Australian sheet music in its collection, with entries under composer and title. Prue Neidorf, with the assistance of Georgina Binns, will be presenting a paper on Australian vocal music at the Australian Musicological Conference in May.

The Musicological Society of Australia publishes an annual journal, Musicology Australia, and a Newsletter twice yearly. Musicology Australia is the successor to the Society occasional series Musicology. Extracts from a letter received from the Library Association of Australia:

Dear Librarian/Archivist

RESEARCHER'S GUIDE TO AUDIOVISUAL RESOURCES IN AUSTRALIA - have you contributed to this important publication?

Work is now under way collating data received. Considerable interest has been expressed by researchers, librarians, archivists, educators, workers in and students of the media. We are urgently seeking information on substantial and/or unique collections of photographs, slides/transparencies, sound recordings, video recordings and motion pictures. It is clear from the hundreds of responses received so far that many institutions underestimate the value and interest of materials in their possession. Lack of information on such material is precisely what makes the researcher's job so often a frustrating, hit-and-miss one! 6 If you can now identify [a] section of your institution/organisation which you believe holds material relevant to RESEARCHER'S GUIDE, please phone (02) 692 9233 or write to:
