SCAM ALERT By Shirley Clay, Resident Counselor The Federal Trade Commission reported that the number one reported scam received in December 2019 was the Social Security Administration Scam. An automated voice on the phone reports to you that there is a problem with your Social Security number, requiring that it be suspended, which would affect your benefits or future benefits. The automated voice asks you to wait on the line or press a specific number to get more information. It’s a scam; hang up! The Social Security Administration will not suspend your Social Security number or threaten your benefits, nor ask you to wire them money or send gift cards. TITAN II MISSILE PRESENTATION By Bill Overacker The Titan II was an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed after WW II by the US military to bolster the size, strength, and speed of our nation’s strategic weapons. Originally, 63 Titan IIs were built with 18 missiles on continuous 24-hour alert. They were in service from 1963 to 1987, and used in the later years as a space launcher to carry pay loads. The Titan Missile Museum, located in Sahuarita, AZ, has the original training missile, which rests in a silo. There is also a large broadband discone antenna 80 feet tall at this site, with a large crown to radiate signals over a wide range of frequencies, which interest amateur radio operators. Resident Jack Briggs was a docent at the Titan Missile Museum. All are invited to the next BST Amateur Radio Club meeting on Thursday, Jan 16 at 11:30 in Room CC1, which features Jack’s presentation on the communications and actions required to launch a missile, and the day-to-day operations in the silo. RESIDENT CONCERT SERIES By Ginny Hallager On Sunday, Dec 1 we were treated to an “Illu-Men-ating” concert of Christmas music by this a capella group of local musicians. Their voices blended “like butta”. Each man is involved with music in the community, and then each comes together with this group to make incredible music. We heard some well-known carols and then were treated to other numbers which added to the Christmas spirit. They tackled complicated rhythms and harmonies with ease. This was a wonderful way to kick off the Holiday Season here at Blue Skies. Our next concert will be on Sunday, Jan 19 at 3pm. We will hear some familiar melodies from our artists from Opera San Antonio. We will welcome Madeline Elizondo, Jeremiah Drake, Timothy Birt and Lisa Owens. Come and enjoy this taste of opera.

SURVIVOR BENEFIT PLAN / DIC “WIDOWS TAX” By Ralph Kelly On Friday, December 20, 2019, President Trump signed the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This Act contains a provision that will completely eliminate the Survivor Benefit Plan / Dependency Indemnity Compensation (SBP/DIC) offset, commonly referred to as the “Widows Tax”, by January 2023. Currently, purchased SBP annuities are offset by the amount of any benefit payable under the VA DIC program. SBP is not a government gratuity benefit; rather, it is a type of insurance purchased out-of-pocket by military retirees for their survivors, while DIC is a VA benefit intended to provide some semblance of financial security to spouses of veterans who died from a service-connected condition. Upon the retiree's death, the SBP annuity is paid monthly to eligible beneficiaries; however, if a surviving spouse is also entitled to DIC, the SBP benefit is reduced by the amount of the DIC benefit. When DIC benefits are payable but the monthly rate is equal to, or greater than, the monthly SBP payment amount, beneficiaries lose the entire SBP payment. Thousands of survivors of military retirees are adversely affected by this unfair offset between SBP and DIC benefits. The Act will remove the offset incrementally by one-third in January 2021, a second third in January 2022, and the final third in January 2023, thereby allowing surviving spouses to receive both the purchased SBP annuities and their earned DIC benefits. The law will not be retroactive; therefore, recoupment of offsets from previous years will not be provided. If a widow is receiving both SPB & DIC, no further action is needed at this time. Widows or widowers that did not file for DIC, and whose deceased military spouse had a service- connected disability, should consider discussing their eligibility with a Veterans Service Organization to see if they should consider filing a VA DIC Claim. For more information, please contact Ralph Kelly (see Resident Roster for phone), Chapter Service Officer, Military Order of the Purple Heart.

THE FIRST STEP TO PREVENT YOUR NEXT FALL By Barbara Boucher, Ph.D., Resident Expert in Fall Prevention This past summer I was asked to repeat the presentation on fall prevention I gave to BST residents in Independent Living on September 7, 2018. My opening sentence was: There’s a whole lot o’ gambling going on here! Leading to a slide stating: WELCOME TO FALLDOWN CASINO! The gist of that presentation was to help each resident self-evaluate their own gambling risk of falling. For those of you who missed the first Fall Prevention presentation, and as a reminder for those who did see it, the content will be provided in monthly columns here in the resident section of The Roadrunner newsletter during 2020. At the same time, for those who are in denial certain of their own ability to stay upright, the information in these articles will allow you to assess everyone else’s risk. Monthly columns for a year seem to fit a 12-step program metaphor. So, stand, say your first name and state how long it has been since your last fall – all in the privacy of your own home anonymously. STEP 1 We admitted we were powerless over aging – that our lives had become unmanageable by trying to live the same as when we were younger. The first step in Fall Prevention is recognizing your risk for falling. An unwillingness to change your lifestyle to be safer or healthier puts you at risk for falling. An example of resistance to change is refusal to use a cane or walker. The need for an assistive device is evident when the resident puts their hand on furniture, the bar on the wall or another person while walking. The furniture, the bar on the wall or another person are poor substitutes for a properly-fit assistive device that has been provided with training from a therapist. Don’t be surprised to read that nearly every risk can be reduced with the help of a therapist. And, at the risk of sliding into multiple metaphors, meet the mascot for this series:

I also thank Debbie Christian and her group of ladies who handled the Poinsettia sales and wrote the names on the stars for the Trees of Light, as well as the staff and residents who lent their time and talents to the Tree of Light Ceremony and baked the cookies. We had many good comments on our decorations this year. A heart-felt “Thank You” to my two special elves, Lily Shockley & Eleanor Frisch, who went the “extra mile” this year due to my heart operation. Once again, to ALL of you - Thank You!

FOLLIES THANK YOU By Marcia Tinsley The 2019 Follies was a huge success! The reason for this success was due to all 90 participants, who did a wonderful job. Thank you, each and every one of you. I loved the special bracelet with all the meaningful charms. It was my pleasure to work with all of you. Thank you especially to the presenters who made the difference. They made the Follies flow very smoothly. Hope to see you again next year!

THANK YOU – HANUKKAH PROGRAM By Shirley Neyhart The Hanukkah program would not have been possible without the help of Teresa Santana and Larissa Alejo and their helpers. Music provided by the Village Sweet Pipes and the ladies of the Village Voices was superb. Of course, any program does not always go according to plan, and so a special thank you to Father Rich Bendorf for rescuing me.

THANK YOU - RECOVERY By Mike Slominski Thank you all for your cards and prayers on my behalf during my recent illness. Your concern and kind words are deeply appreciated. It is yet another example that we are in fact members of a large family that cares for each other, and that our move to

SPORTS, GAMES AND SCORES STAFF ROCK ’N ROLL MARATHON RACES 2019 By John MacIntyre The Rock n’ Roll Marathon races are the largest held in San Antonio. On Wednesday, Dec 11, over 18,000 runners from all 50 states and from 27 countries participated. Pictured at right, in the middle, are myself (West) and Hope Santos (Staff), who completed the Half Marathon, and Steve Wilson (East), at right, who ran the 10K. Also in December, Pat Perry (West), at left, ran the St Nick at Nite 10K at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort. I had a really great time enjoying the half marathon. Ran all over downtown, up to Ft Sam, through Brackenridge Park which had a mile honoring fallen military in recent years. A running buddy of mine in Orlando suggested we run our races as Pearl Harbor Remembrance races. He ran the Orlando Half the day before our race in Navy gear, and I ran that day in Army gear.

We play on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the BST West tennis courts from 8-10am, weather permitting. Pickleball is played on a small court (about one-half of a tennis court), and provides seniors an ideal way to get exercise. Gender or strength is of no advantage in this sport. We have the required paddles, balls, nets, etc.; so come out, and we’ll provide instructions

20 Deadline: Thursday, Jan 23 @ Noon: [email protected] Next Publication Date: Friday, Jan 31 and show you how easy it is to play. For further information, contact Helen Vanderneck, Don & Debbie Christian, Keith & Susan Shumaker or Tom Carter. Also, indoor courts and Pickleball equipment are available at Lackland AFB Medina Annex Fitness Center on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have any questions, contact Betty Chalfont (see Resident Roster).

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By Gayl Ganskow If you are familiar with the card game Gin Rummy, you have a head start to understanding "MJ." There are no playing cards here because in MJ you mix, pick, discard and arrange your tiles in combinations for a winning hand. The ideal game is played with four players; however, 2-3 players can play and have a great time as well. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up. Playing Sessions: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B&A days - 2nd Wednesday of each month, Card Room 112 (Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop, first floor) Fridays in CC3 from 1-3:30pm, and Saturdays in CC2 from 1-3:30pm.

BOCCE By David Capito The Bocce court has been refurbished, and is now ready for the fun to start. If you are already a player and need a competitor, or are new to the game and need instructions, give me a call (see Resident Roster). I have a roster of names that I can send you, or I will show you the simple rules of the game. If you would like to be on the roster, give me a call. The bocce balls, rules of the game and scoreboard are in the building which is supposed to be open from 6am-10pm (court is lighted). If the room is locked, call the Front Desk for assistance. Bocce is a very simple game played in many countries, especially in , so try it and you will be amazed at the fun and relaxation it provides. It definitely lowers my blood pressure!!!

BST WEST TENNIS By Dan Collin Here we add a tribute to Col Buzz Trustin who demonstrated that tennis can be a source of great fun and good exercise well up into our tenth decade. Our newest participant is much younger but had not played for 32 years, and is now terrorizing us all with his hard strokes and serves. If you’ve ever played the game, please come out and join our small group on Monday and Friday mornings. You can rekindle your muscle memory and rhythm with our ball machine or the curved backboard, and the courts are open for play or practice at any time (except early Tues, Thurs and Sat mornings for Pickleball). We play at a level which may be dissimilar to tennis as you knew it years ago. We do not resemble high school or college athletes. Some of us even serve underhand, and most of us have learned the art of saying “yours” and telling ourselves to “let it go”, but we have FUN and would love to share our JOY with YOU. Who will replace Buzz Trustin?

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By Martha Wesson December was a great month for our group, as we had a more evenly distributed list of winning hands and winning players than usual. Some highlights: when Abby was up 69 points, Annie won the Hand of the Day, and Marilyn had all four jokers to win with Dragon Lineup. The best day of all was on the 17th when we had our annual party in the LeMay Room, which we all enjoyed tremendously. We had an early fantastic potluck lunch at four tables, and then we played all afternoon. Carolyn had a Bouquet, Martha had a Hand from Heaven, and we reverted to the usual abundance of “Idiot” hands. Thank you Annie for all your hard work for this fun party! We will be starting up again on Tuesdays in January at 1pm in CC3, so please feel free to join us.
