Whereas colonial Korean literature and Zainichi literature have typically been considered separately, I analyze them as part of a single trajectory, noting continuities in how Korean writers on both sides of the 1945 collapse of the empire struggle to avoid the dual traps of essentialism and assimilation. That is, in the face of pressures to assimilate into (post)imperial Japan, these writers grapple with the question of how to assert Korean particularity without reproducing stereotyped notions of Korean difference which were generated by the same imperial hierarchies. This overdetermined position—arising from the dual impulse to deconstruct essentialist difference and to avoid collapsing productive difference into a hegemonic mainstream—may be called the double bind of identity. The central focus of this project, then, is whether and how marginalized writers are able to overcome particular versions of this critical double bind through the medium of literary text. It further attempts to rethink the frameworks applied to these authors and texts, including modern Korean literature, modern Japanese literature, and even groupings like Zainichi literature that attempt to resist strictly national models, by shedding light on their participation in such overdeterminations. Looking closely at how writers work within and around the various constraints imposed on their writing, I argue that the hybrid language of these texts, located in the interstices and imbrications of Korean and Japanese spaces, is a potential site for radical representations of a particular “Korean” identity. The space of literary text offers a medium for representing identities less prone to falling into essentialist traps precisely because it is imaginary and undecidable. This radical language makes possible an escape from the double bind of identity faced by these writers: to simultaneously “represent” and transcend Korea. In this way, reading Korean writers in Japanese spaces not only offers a basis for critiquing ethno-national literary frameworks, but also has the potential to open up new possibilities for coping with difference, contributing to broader debates on intersectionality and identity politics. To that end, this dissertation takes up the particular intersectional circumstances of four Korean writers and their negotiations in hybrid literary texts: the queer language and subjectivities of Yi Kwangsu's Mujŏng, Ch'ae Mansik's ambiguously satirical repent for pro-Japanese collaboration, Kim Sŏkpŏm's invention of an imaginary Korea within the space of the Japanese language, and Kin Kakuei's attempt to “speak” through a narrator who stutters. Joseonhakgyo, Learning under North Korean Leadership: Transitioning from 1970 to Present* Min Hye Cho** This paper analyzes English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used during North Korea’s three leaderships: 1970s, 1990s and present. The textbooks have been used at Korean ethnic schools, Joseonhakgyo (朝鮮学校), which are managed by the Chongryon (總聯) organization in Japan. The organization is affiliated with North Korea despite its South Korean origins. Given North Korea’s changing influence over Chongryon’s education system, this study investigates how Chongryon Koreans’ view on themselves has undergone a transition. The textbooks’ content that have been used in junior high school classrooms (students aged between thirteen and fifteen years) are analyzed. Selected texts from these textbooks are analyzed critically to delineate the changing views of Chongryon Koreans. The findings demonstrate that Chongryon Koreans have changed their perspective from focusing on their ties to North Korea (1970s) to focusing on surviving as a minority group (1990s) to finally recognising that they reside permanently in Japan (present).     5 The Status and Role of Ethnic Koreans in the Japanese Economy TOSHIYUKI TAMURA Who really are ethnic Koreans and who are they not in Japanese society? To answer this question is not an easy task. They are sometimes wrongly taken for Korean-Japanese, that is, Koreans residing in Japan with Japanese nationality. Actually, these people may or may not be included in the con- cept of ethnic Koreans, depending on the scope and the context of argu- ment. The overwhelming majority of ethnic Koreans are legally foreigners with foreign passports, and accordingly their legal status should not be considered parallel to that of people in other countries, such as Korean-Americans. For a closer understanding of the concept, we must retrace the modern history of Korea and Japan and their interrelationships. A smattering of history will convince one how and why the illusion that Japan is ethni- cally homogeneous—which I have termed the “homogeneity myth”1—has spread so widely among Japanese citizens. It was this kind of conscious- ness that, together with the North-South division of the Korean penin- sula, had made the legal status of Korean residents so complicated and peculiar to Japan. In this chapter, I try to describe the past and the present situations of Koreans in Japan, making utmost use of official statistical data, as well as the results of my own work.     Policy Forum Reactionary Nationalism and Democratic Development in Myanmar and Japan Apichai W. Shipper1* Nationalism has reemerged as a major issue in Asia, where thousands of ethnic groups live inside national boundaries artificially constructed by Western colonizers. While other Asian societies are witnessing various forms of nationalism, Myanmar and Japan are experiencing reactionary nationalism, which is making negative headlines around the world. I define “reactionary nationalism” as a demonstration of love for the nation among a group of ordinary people in reaction to a perceived, falsely constructed, or real threat to its national security or existence from an ethnic minority or foreigner group. It arises from a dissatisfaction with modernization that is accompanied by increasing economic and social inequality. Reactionary nationalists seek to punish specific ethnic minorities or foreigner groups that act in ways perceived as destroying their collective political community or as undermining their common identity or national unity. They view the targeted ethnic group with prejudice for receiving special privileges or assistance from the government or the international aid community. While demonstrating their love for the country, they often incite hatred against a particular minority or foreigner group. Reactionary nationalists in both the heterogeneous society of Myanmar and the homogeneous society of Japan have formed hate groups comprised of Buddhist nationalists and internet ultra-rightists (netto uyoku), respectively. I argue that these particular nationalist groups hinder democratic development in their countries, because democracies require respect for individual political rights and for differences in culture (beliefs and identities) between individuals and groups. Reactionary nationalist groups espouse undemocratic ideals and ethnic violence against minority groups.

    The Changing Face of Korean Cinema The rapid development of Korean cinema during the decades of the 1960s and 2000s reveals a dynamic cinematic history that runs parallel to the nation’s politi- cal, social, economic, and cultural transformation during these formative periods. This book examines the ways in which South Korean cinema has undergone a transformation from an antiquated local industry in the 1960s into a thriving international cinema in the twenty-first century. It investigates the circumstances that allowed these two eras to emerge as creative watersheds and demonstrates the forces behind Korea’s positioning of itself as an important contributor to regional and global culture, especially its interplay with Japan, Greater China, and the United States. Beginning with an explanation of the understudied operations of the film industry during its 1960s take-off, it then offers insight into the challenges that producers, directors, and policy makers faced in the 1970s and 1980s during the most volatile part of Park Chung Hee’s authoritarian rule and the subsequent Chun Doo-hwan military government. It moves on to explore the film industry’s profes- sionalization in the 1990s and subsequent international expansion in the 2000s. In doing so, it explores the nexus and tensions of film policy, producing, directing, genres, and the internationalization of Korean cinema over half a century. By highlighting the recent transnational turn in national cinemas, this book underscores the impact of developments pioneered by Korean cinema on the transformation of “Planet Hallyuwood”. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Korean Studies and Film Studies.

    New Perspectives on the Cultural History of 1980s South Korea Social Sciences Building 250 University Park Campus of the University of Southern California Friday-Saturday, November 6-7, 2015 This conference aims to explore and generate new critical perspectives on the cultural history of 1980s South Korea through a transnational intellectual dialogue among some of the most distinguished international experts on the period. The decade of the 1980s is rightly celebrated by Koreans today as the era of minjung (people’s) culture, a time when a collective effort by ordinary citizens and intellectuals alike led to upheaval and the democratization of the country within the space of a few years. Previous representations of the era, however, have tended to privilege a political narrative of liberation over many complexities and contradictions. On the one hand, the focus on democratization has left in the shadow other coeval processes such as rapid economic expansion, the rise of a middle class as a social subject, and the opening up of culture through new media and technology. On the other hand, the persistent centering of minjung intellectuals as the agents of democratization has led to a neglect of the contributions of workers, women, and common Koreans as well as the downplaying of the international aspects of the movement. Bringing together Korean, American, and Australian scholars, this conference encourages presenters and participants alike to engage in a broadening and contextualizing reflection on the significance of the 1980s for Korean culture then and today. Some of the major issues to be raised in panels are the extent and significance of internationalism both inside and outside the minjung movement, the agency of working-class masses in the decade’s cultural production, the impact of new media and technologies on 1980s cultural imaginations, the affinity and variances between different media cultures, and the ruptures and continuities that characterized Korean culture as the 1980s gave way to the democratic 1990s.
