The Changing Face of Korean Cinema, 1960 to 2015 / Brian Yecies and Ae-Gyung Shim
The Changing Face of Korean Cinema The rapid development of Korean cinema during the decades of the 1960s and 2000s reveals a dynamic cinematic history that runs parallel to the nation’s politi- cal, social, economic, and cultural transformation during these formative periods. This book examines the ways in which South Korean cinema has undergone a transformation from an antiquated local industry in the 1960s into a thriving international cinema in the twenty-first century. It investigates the circumstances that allowed these two eras to emerge as creative watersheds and demonstrates the forces behind Korea’s positioning of itself as an important contributor to regional and global culture, especially its interplay with Japan, Greater China, and the United States. Beginning with an explanation of the understudied operations of the film industry during its 1960s take-off, it then offers insight into the challenges that producers, directors, and policy makers faced in the 1970s and 1980s during the most volatile part of Park Chung Hee’s authoritarian rule and the subsequent Chun Doo-hwan military government. It moves on to explore the film industry’s profes- sionalization in the 1990s and subsequent international expansion in the 2000s. In doing so, it explores the nexus and tensions of film policy, producing, directing, genres, and the internationalization of Korean cinema over half a century. By highlighting the recent transnational turn in national cinemas, this book underscores the impact of developments pioneered by Korean cinema on the transformation of “Planet Hallyuwood”. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Korean Studies and Film Studies. -

Jones, Advisor Dr. Marc Johnston-Guerrero Dr. Cynthia Tyson Copyrighted by Kari Brooke Taylor 2017 Abstract The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how interactions between undergraduate students and their learning environments influenced their development toward critical consciousness. Critical consciousness represents a complex way of making meaning of one’s self in relation to one’s social world that is necessary for meeting the demands of today’s diverse democracy and that underlies the ability to demonstrate social responsibility (Freire 1970, 1973; Landreman, Rasmussen, King, & Jiang, 2007). Environments investigated in this case study included curricular and co- curricular experiences associated with a critical service-learning course, the institutional culture of a large public research university, and U.S. society at large. Two sets of research questions guided this study: (1a) What types of interactions between students and their learning environments promote development toward critical consciousness? (1b) How do these types of interactions help students develop critical consciousness? (2a) What types of interactions between students and their learning environments inhibit development toward critical consciousness? (2b) How do these types of interactions stall or interfere with students’ development toward critical consciousness? Case study, grounded upon the respective tenets of interpretivism and critical theory, served as the primary methodology. -

第 22 号 『社会システム研究』 2011年 3 月 1 査読論文 The North Korean Films of Shin Sang-ok Johannes Schönherr * Abstract Shin Sang-ok was a prolifi c South Korean fi lm director who suddenly disappeared to North Korea in 1978. Between 1983 and 1986, he made 7 feature fi lms in North Korea and produced 13 films more. In 1986, Shin used the chance of a business trip to Vienna to defect to the United States. In this paper, I briefl y describe North Korean cinema history of the period before Shin arrived in the country, Kim Jong-il’s involvement in fi lm, Shin’s pre-North Korea career and fi nally the main fi lms he made in North Korea and how they affected the development of North Korean cinema. Introduction Shin Sang-ok (1926 – 2006) was a prolifi c movie director and producer all of his adult life, in total he made 74 fi lms in the 52 years he was active (1952 – 2004). He was a truly international film director and worked within or closely collaborated with the film industries of several countries, including South Korea, North Korea, the United States, Hong Kong and Japan, and he had the ability to successfully adapt to all those different settings. Sarah Jaffe has come a long way since her debut EP Even Born Again was self-released in 2008. The Texas native has since released two critically acclaimed albums Suburban Nature (Kirtland 2010) and The Body Wins (Kirtland 2012), she’s toured with Midlake, Chelsea Wolfe, Norah Jones, Blitzen Trapper, Why?, David Gray, Old 97s, CentromatiC, Lou Barlow and New Multitudes. She’s had her voice featured in the Disney/Pixar short The Blue Umbrella that was scored by Jon Brion and she made her late night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In addition, through her close relationship with Erykah Badu’s band, The Cannabinoids, Jaffe started writing with S1 under the moniker The Dividends (http://wearethedividends.com). The duo’s first collaboration “Bad Guy” is also the first track on Eminem’s new record MMLP2 which features both a co-write and chorus vocal from Jaffe. To say she’s experienced tremendous growth both personally and professionally would be an understatement. It is hard to predict what is on the horizon for Jaffe in 2014, but guaranteed you’re going to want to know about it.
