  • Contextualizing How Undergraduate Students Develop Toward Critical Consciousness
Contextualizing How Undergraduate Students Develop Toward Critical Consciousness DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kari Brooke Taylor Graduate Program in Educational Studies The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Susan R. Jones, Advisor Dr. Marc Johnston-Guerrero Dr. Cynthia Tyson Copyrighted by Kari Brooke Taylor 2017 Abstract The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how interactions between undergraduate students and their learning environments influenced their development toward critical consciousness. Critical consciousness represents a complex way of making meaning of one’s self in relation to one’s social world that is necessary for meeting the demands of today’s diverse democracy and that underlies the ability to demonstrate social responsibility (Freire 1970, 1973; Landreman, Rasmussen, King, & Jiang, 2007). Environments investigated in this case study included curricular and co- curricular experiences associated with a critical service-learning course, the institutional culture of a large public research university, and U.S. society at large. Two sets of research questions guided this study: (1a) What types of interactions between students and their learning environments promote development toward critical consciousness? (1b) How do these types of interactions help students develop critical consciousness? (2a) What types of interactions between students and their learning environments inhibit development toward critical consciousness? (2b) How do these types of interactions stall or interfere with students’ development toward critical consciousness? Case study, grounded upon the respective tenets of interpretivism and critical theory, served as the primary methodology.

Inspired by Standing Rock, the Decolonize the Curriculum movement in South Africa, and long histories of resistance in the Americas, Palestine, and elsewhere, we propose that the next step for media activism as a whole is to place these spaces of opposition and refusal into extended engagement Dwith current decolonial thought and practices. The “object” of study for this In Focus dossier is not the dominant (media) forms of racial capitalism, but rather decolonial action, thinking, and organizing. As two of the world’s most vibrant and versatile musicians, neither James nor Abrams shies away from a challenge, and with The Order of Nature they’ve crafted a large-scale symphonic suite that has James’ evocative songs as its foundation. Abrams built a grand orchestral house on that foundation, and the result is an explosion of music that boldly synthesizes rock and classical while taking advantage of orchestral music’s inherently cinematic nature. Vooral in thuisland Engeland is de 24-jarige, singer- songwriter van Oegandese afkomst nog voor zijn debuutalbum is verschenen bijzonder succesvol; hij won zo’n beetje alle debutantenprijzen. Ook op het Europese continent begint Kiwanuka’s naam Kyteman – The Hermit Sessions Daniel Lohues – Hout Moet Erwin Nyhoff – Take Your Time rond te zingen.
