In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Inside this issue: Alhamdulillah, we are Mahdavis today because our elders have left a legacy of Iman and spirituality, a path in the right direction to reach the ultimate destiny, a volume of knowledge, both formal and informal, that can guide us from time to time to make right and difficult decisions. What would be our legacy for the next generation? A serious thought on this question is the need of the hour. What are we leaving behind us for the younger Editorial 1 people? Are we giving them a set up where they can find answers to some of their religious questions? Are we teaching them why we are Mahdavis and why we are different from others? We have never said any- thing bad for other faiths or other points of views unless and until we were challenged with the question of Intoxication 2 our faith. Several voluminous books have been written to defend our faith and answer the questions raised by others. Today we do not have time to talk to our kids about Mahdaviah faith. This problem is some- what different in the West where we do not have institutions built to protect and safeguard our faith. We have a substantial amount of Mahdavis living in some of the places in United States and Canada but un- fortunately, there is no attempt to institutionalize our activities as a community, a community representing Silsila 3 a separate sect of Islam. Prayer of a 4 Alhamdulillah, there are many Mahdavis in the West with much stronger faith than in other places but Child commonly we hear from people that how we are different from the mainstream Islam? While they and we believe in the same Qur’an, the Prophet SAS, the Islamic Shari’ah, the way we practice is also same so why and where is the difference. The difference lies in accepting the advent of Imam Mahdi AS, who was born in 847H. He is the Caliph of Allah and Prophet Muhammed SAS himself gave him the name of Mahdi and Recipe of the 4 asked the Ummah to go and make covenant with him even if you have to crawl on Ice, if you hear about Month his advent. Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan.There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings.

The skill set, and consequently societal contribution, was historically based on individual talents and not on institutionally, or state, defined professions and job responsibilities. Why did the profession of the imam evolve into a distinctive position, one that includes leading five daily prayers, but also giving occasional mentoring and advising to community members? How did the position become practical and applied? Why did it shift away from being a natural service available in mosques to a position that entailed marrying and divorcing congregants, advising and counseling, youth work, representing and political relationship building among many other things? This chapter explores some of the history of the imam in current Muslim imagination along with more contemporary expressions of the expectation of an imam working in a U.S. mosque today. The next seventeen years of his life would be spent crisscrossing the Western world giving lectures to thousands of Europeans and Americans in an attempt to spread this philosophical message. This message shifted over those first seventeen years and the subsequent century from one that heavily emphasized specifically Sufi elements of teaching and philosophy to a religious message that placed heavy emphasis on the universal elements that it considered to be the core of all religions.   • The Judgement of God. Migration Aspirations and Sufi-Islam in Urban Senegal
    PhiN-Beiheft 18/2019: 284 Sebastian Prothmann (Bamako) Ndogalu Yàlla – The Judgement of God. Migration Aspirations and Sufi-Islam in Urban Senegal Based on ethnographic research in Pikine, an urban area within the Dakar region, I argue that theistic predetermination plays a pivotal role in migration aspirations of young men in urban Senegal. At- tainments within this religious popular belief such as successful migration or material wealth are believed to depend on wërsëg (luck) predetermined by one's fate (Ndogalu Yàlla). Likewise, the phenomenon of irregular migration from Senegal to Europe is similarly perceived: 'Barça wala Bar- sakh' (Barcelona or die) is what young people in coastal Senegal used to call this form of migration. However, I will show that young men handle their fate proactively, as they accept the risks and uncertainties of migration at all costs. With their courageous behaviour and fearless acceptance of even life-threatening obstacles during irregular migration, young men show determination to chal- lenge their destiny while trying to positively define and strengthen both their masculine and their religious identities. Introduction When I visited Pikine and Dakar in 2010 for the first time, I was astonished by the proliferation of religious symbols throughout the public space. Mural paintings and sophisticated colourful glass paintings, so-called suweer, with portraits of famous religious persons, particularly Cheikh Amadou Bamba,1 Cheikh Ibrahima Fall,2 El Hadj Malick Sy,3 Ibrāhīm Niass4 or other important sheikhs, have sprouted all over the town. Smith Centre for Islamic Culture and Society, University of Mataram, Mataram 83125, Indonesia; [email protected] Abstract: This article is a feminist ethnographic exploration of how ‘indigenous’ notions of a ‘sacred feminine’ shape Sufi praxis on the island of Lombok in the eastern part of Indonesia in Southeast Asia. I demonstrate through long-term immersive anthropological fieldwork how in her indigenous form as Dewi Anjani ‘Spirit Queen of Jinn’ and as ‘Holy Saint of Allah’ who rules Lombok from Mount Rinjani, together with a living female saint and Murshida with whom she shares sacred kinship, these feminine beings shape the kind of Sufi praxis that has formed in the largest local Islamic organization in Lombok, Nahdlatul Wathan, and its Sufi order, Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan. Arguments are situated in a Sufi feminist standpoint, revealing how an active integration of indigeneity into understandings of mystical experience gives meaning to the sacred feminine in aspects of Sufi praxis in both complementary and hierarchical ways without challenging Islamic gender constructs that reproduce patriarchal expressions of Sufism and Islam. The Alawis number perhaps a million persons—about 12 percent of Syria’s population—and are concentrated in the northwestern region around Latakia and Tartus. This religious minority has provided Syria’s rulers for nearly two decades. Syrian President Hafz al-Asad, in power since 1970, as well as Syria’s leading military and security chiefs, are of Alawi origin. Once poor peas- ants, they beat their ploughshares into swords, frst becoming military offcers, then using the instruments of war to seize the state. The role of Alawi communal solidarity has been diffcult to defne, and tribal afflia- tion, kinship, and ideology also explain the composition of Syria’s ruling elite. But when all is said and done, the fact remains that power in Syria is closely held by Alawis.1 This domination has bred deep resentment among many of Syria’s Sunni Muslims, who constitute 70 percent of the country’s population. For at the forefront of Syria’s modern struggle for independence were the Sunni Muslims who populated the cities of Syria’s heartland. They enjoyed a privileged standing under Sunni Ottoman rule; they, along with Syrian Christian intellectuals, developed the guiding principles of Arab nationalism; they resisted the French; and they stepped into positions of authority with the departure of the French.

He identified with this role on the basis of his Sharifian and spiritual legitimacy and set himself the mission of the moral reconstruction of the Muslim mind as a preliminary step that would lead to the building of a society defined by Islam; he also founded his own community as a model for this, his jamā’a.

While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry.
