1. Umweltbundesamt (UBA) - Federal Environment Agency in Dessau-Roßlau

1.1 UBA mission

The UBA’s motto, For our environment (“Für Mensch und Umwelt”) sums up our mission pretty well, we feel. As ’s main environmental protection agency, our task is to ensure that our fellow citizens have a healthy environment with clean air and water, free of pollutants to the greatest extent possible. Here at the UBA, we concern ourselves with an extremely broad spectrum of issues, including waste avoidance, climate protection, and pesticide approvals.

Our work centers around gathering data concerning the state of the environment, investigating the relevant interrelationships and making projections – and then, based on these findings, providing federal bodies such as the Ministry of the Environment with policy advice. We also provide the general public with information and answer your questions on all of the various issues that we address. Apart from these activities, we implement environmental law by making sure that it is applied in areas such as CO2 trading and approval processes for chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs and pesticides. Our activities are set down in the law that established our agency.

Our overarching mission is early detection of environmental risks and threats so that we can assess them and find viable solutions for them in a timely manner. We do this by conducting research in our own labs and by outsourcing research to scientific institutions in German and abroad. We are also the German point of contact for numerous international organizations such as WHO.

Here at the UBA, we employ experts such as biologists, chemists, economists, lawyers and engineers from all ecology related disciplines – the goal being to examine environmental issues from all sides and develop viable solutions.

We have around 1,600 employees spread across 13 sites, seven of which are monitoring stations in our own air quality tracking network.

The UBA is composed of five specialized environmental divisions, plus our General Services Division, which performs various services via entities such as our human resource unit. For a detailed overview of and information concerning our divisions, see our organizational chart.

2. Bauhaus Dessau

2.1 Universal about Bauhaus

When architectural aficiandos talk about classical modernism, Dessau is always included in the conversation. From 1926 to 1932, the town housed one of the most famous architecture and art schools in the world: the Bauhaus.

Its reputation was no accident either: and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe succeeded in bringing artists like , , Lyonel Feininger, , László Moholy-Nagy, and Johannes Itten to Dessau.

Today, the Bauhaus building is regarded as being one of the icons of modernism – and it’s only a few yards away from the Master Houses settlement (Meisterhaus-Siedlung). The settlement of Törten testifies to early attempts at industrial construction, and the view of the River from the terrace of the Kornhaus restaurant is magnificent.

Gropius’ employment office building, Fieger’s Residence and the Cooperative Building also bear testament to the visionary ideas of the Bauhaus-style architects.

2.2 Bauhaus Academy

The one-year MSc. program is conducted by Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in cooperation with Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. It is conceived as a preparatory step towards a doctoral study. It strives to integrate design and research, which are often perceived as separate disciplines. The practical experience of design gained by participants in previous study semesters and in professional practice provides the basis for an approach to design now primarily based on research and analysis.

The core of the MSc. Programme, communicated using different teaching methods with the participation of the three aforementioned partner institutions, relies on three thematic building blocks: Design as research – analysis of the synthesising practices; design as projection – anticipation and intervention strategies; design in the world – impact and application. The participants gain sound scientific knowledge and competencies on the basis of tasks that are both practice-orientated and forward-looking. The successfully completed MSc. programme includes entitlement Sources: www.dessau-rosslau.de, www.uba.de, www.bauhaus-dessau.de, www.ferropolis.de, www.goitzsche.de Akademie für Energie und Umwelt e.V., TGZ-Campus, Kühnauer Straße 24, D-06846 Dessau-Roßlau to study for a doctorate. Moreover, the programme fosters personal growth and as such paves the way for a meaningful level of social engagement. The MSc. programme COOP Design Research opens up professional perspectives in the fields of research and teaching, design and cultural studies and curatorial practice.

The programme is conducted at Gropius´ Bauhaus in Dessau. Some lectures take place at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Students apply with a letter of intent, referring thereby to one of the three thematic building blocks. The modules combine theory and practice and research-orientated and projective studies: The teaching formats combine and give equal weight to the formulation of analysis and experimentation, text and image, material and object.

3. The Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz (Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz) A uniquely beautiful landscape in the middle of Germany:

As many as 100 intellectual figures created literary monuments in the Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz in the past two centuries, and millions have since enjoyed what an enlightened prince gave to mankind: 142 square kilometres of the Garden of Eden around the former royal residence of the princes of Anhalt-Dessau. Inspired by the experience of his educational journeys through (the ‘Grand Tour’, as he called it), Prince Franz (1740-1817), together with his many gardeners and his friend and architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (1736-1800), converted his princedom into a garden realm over a period of 40 years, a realm which is unique by European standards. It was therefore no surprise, when the garden was ennobled by UNESCO with the title of World Cultural Heritage in 2000. However, this is not the only sight which makes the Garden Realm an absolute must for every visitor to Dessau. Visitors who view and absorb the sights of its unique symbiosis of art and nature, architecture and education are transported into an appreciative realm of their own. Castles in delightful parks, walking, hiking and cycling trails through meadows and forests, watchtowers on dikes and pavilions, where you can enjoy princely holidays today; in and around Dessau-Roßlau, you will find a holiday the like of which others seek in far-off worlds. The Georgium, Luisium, the Kühnauer Park, the new burial ground and the Mosigkau castle and park are situated in the municipal area of Dessau-Roßlau alone – and these five world heritage sites characterise the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm in very individual ways. However, the fascination of the garden realm is not created by the parks and the castles with their museums alone; the countless small architectural jewels spread over the entire area of the town also create visual contacts and landscapes embedded in the primitive floodplain country of the Rivers Elbe and Mulde. From Dessau to Wörlitz This 20-km route from Dessau to Wörlitz is probably the most beautiful cycling and hiking experience in the region. All its beautiful facets will unfold for you with every kilometre you travel – and a special highlight Sources: www.dessau-rosslau.de, www.uba.de, www.bauhaus-dessau.de, www.ferropolis.de, www.goitzsche.de Akademie für Energie und Umwelt e.V., TGZ-Campus, Kühnauer Straße 24, D-06846 Dessau-Roßlau awaits you at the end of the route. The Wörlitz grounds house the most famous park of the Garden Realm and a picturesque landscape of sheer enlightenment. The park was open to the public from the outset and was part of the educational program of the enlightened prince. Landscape, gardens, buildings and fine art result in an almost-unbelievable, overall work of art. Starting out from the four arms of the Wörlitz Lake, an old arm of the Elbe, a watery kingdom was created by means of canals, which integrates the two wall holes formed during dike breaks in the park landscape. The first environmental altar is located here… Castle and Oranienbaum Park When the former village of Nischwitz became Oranienbaum, an entire work of art consisting of the town, the castle and the park was created. Distinctive features here are the English-Chinese garden and the large Orangery.

4. UNESCO biosphere reserves are large-scale model regions for complexly-structured culture landscapes, which are used sustain ably by humans. They include core zones, various types of protected areas, and land which is used in accordance with ecological concepts. The use of the land within the limits set by the environment, is an important component. Organic farming and eco-tourism are particularly well-suited to this model. Worldwide, there are 599 of these reserves in 117 countries. As part of UNESCO's international network, each reserve is required to fulfill the goals of research, environmental monitoring, and environmental education. Beaver kids on Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve Many rare and unusual animals and plant live on the biosphere reserve. You can learn about some of these during the Beaver Kids Game. At the same time, you can test your knowledge and become an official Beaver Kid. Good luck! Does the world look a lot different to you in your imagination? Relax in nature The River Elbe... it’s around 1,090 kilometres in length, from its source in the Sudeten Mountains to its estuary. Through bizarre mountains like those in , it flows past historical places such as Meißen, Lutherstadt , Tangermünde and the Hansestadt – but it shows off its most beautiful aspects when it reaches Dessau-Roßlau.

This is the land of beavers, black and white storks, eagles and cranes and the warmth-loving river valley plants and orchids; and welcome to around 126,000 acres of nature. Part of the reserve belongs to the Dessau-Roßlauer municipal area, and it lies right on the town’s doorstep, something which occurs in no other town of this size in all of Germany. This is something guests who visit our town want to see... and they can, but not in the core zone, unfortunately, because flora and fauna are allowed to develop completely undisturbed there. In many other locations, however, such as the beaver open-air enclosure, not far from the Auenhaus Info Pavilion on the eastern outskirts of the town, Mother Nature rules. Castor fiber albicus – the Elbe beaver – like many of the ideas that came and come from Dessau-Roßlau – was an ‘export hit’, until beaver stocks in other German states and in the Netherlands and Denmark had been built up sufficiently. The River Elbe, and the Mulde which flows into it, characterise the entire landscape of Dessau-Roßlau and Wörlitz. The largest hardwood floodplain forests in Europe can be found in the biosphere reserve of Middle Elbe – Mr. Beaver knows why he likes living here! – and old arms of the Elbe, such as the Kühnau Lake, are under the patronage of UNESCO, but twice! Once as part of the Middle Elbe biosphere reserve and once as the Garden Realm of Dessau-Wörlitz. This landscape characterised by the Flemish (water construction artists par excellence!) has been an example of sustainability since the times when the concept was totally unknown… All this has of course left its mark on the history of Dessau-Roßlau – and this history can be traced, for example, in the shipbuilding and shipping museum (Schiffbau- und Schifffahrtsmuseum) in the district of Roßlau. All water sports are popular at and on the Elbe. Guests who prefer a pleasant river cruise will enjoy our passenger ships – but canoeists, rowers and the owners of sailing and motor yachts will also find anchorages and overnight accommodations to satisfy every taste. Silence is golden for many of us nowadays and you can find it at many locations and in many variations on the Elbe around Dessau-Roßlau: sitting on a raised platform at the river's edge, for example, or lying on its white sand when the water level of the Elbe is low; on your bicycle on the Elbe cycle route; spreading a white tablecloth for a picnic on the meadows of the floodplains; and here’s something special... gliding quietly on the current with your car. What? With my car on the river, you ask? Yes! Your car doesn’t have to be an amphibious model, of course, but you can glide along on one of the yaw ferries, which can only be found in such numbers here. They use the force of the current to float from shore to shore without using any motor or muscle power – and our guests are sorry that the trip is over when they drive on to dry land again. The River Elbe. The Kornhaus trip restaurant was built in 1929/30 by Bauhaus Master Carl Fieger – and you’ll find it where the Elbe describes a wide curve to leave the Dessau-Roßlau municipal area. Try sitting there with a cool white wine in the summer evening sun – you’ll soon share the great Walter Gropius’ enthusiasm for Dessau!

5. Ferropolis - An example of Remediation Ferropolis, "the city of iron" is an open museum of old huge industrial machines in Gräfenhainichen, a city between Wittenberg and Dessau, Germany. It's an open-air museum which contains machines from the mid- twentieth century. They can measure to 30 meters high, 120 meters long and weigh up to 1980 tons. Moreover, the area is used for several events like opera or music festivals like the Splash! Festival, Melt! Festival and the "Ferropolis in Flammen" ("Ferropolis in flames").

Panorama view over Ferropolis History The museum is located on the site of a former strip mining operation. The minister of finance of the Saxony- Anhalt formally created the project on the 14th of December 1995. In December 2005 the museum was integrated into the "European Route of Industrial Heritage".

6. Remediation of the brown coal pits near Bitterfeld - The Landscape Park Goitzsche What makes the landscape park Goitzsche so unusual, the deliberate conversion is to the world-biggest art project which originated in the course of the world exhibition EXPO in 2000. Many projects of the Goitzsche tell with the means of unique landscape painting about recollections and visions.

Therefore, the whole project "Landschaftspark Goitzsche" was not least distinguished in 2001 in two categories "Planning" and "Design" with the EDRA/PLACES AWARD. The EDRA is an international union founded in 1968 in the USA with more than 50,000 members to whom, for example, architects, artists, social scientists and managers belong who deal with ecological and social aspects and needs of industrial societies. With it a German project received for the first time this international price of especially exemplary projects of the environmental creation and landscape architecture.

To the sighting described on top we can organize lessons and excursions. Academy - AfEU e.V.
