GRANT OBJECTIVES: Produce a high-caliber opera experience for 3,000 paid patrons; Introduce a successful opera experience to children from Bexar County schools.

SUMMARY OF REPORTED FINDINGS:

The San Antonio Opera’s (SAO) Placido Domingo concert event was evaluated in September 2007. This evaluation includes FY 2008 and FY 2009 reports on organization programs.

Productions SAO produced three fully-staged operas in both 2008 and 2009. Each opera was performed in the Lila Cockrell Theatre. The total attendance figures showed an increase of 2,621 from the 2008 season to the 2009 season; however, fluctuation of attendance from show to show was significant:

Concerts A total of four concert events were sponsored during this reporting period:

Concert Attendance New Year’s Eve (FY08) with Vikki Carr 1,400 Cavalleria Rusticana with Andrea Bocelli 8,974 Don Braswell 1,070 Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin 1,043

Special events during this period included:  Two annual donor recognition events (190 attending in FY09; unknown for FY08)  New Year’s Eve dinner and dance (458 attending)  Pre/post events for Elixir and Tosca (248 pre and 290 post attending)  Opera Dinners & receptions (235 attending)  Woman of Achievement (400 attending)  Lupone/Pitinkin reception (40 attending)

Education Programs Programs are designed to introduce young people to opera:  In joint production with the Majik Theatre  The Bug Opera (FY08) was attended by 5,800 individuals  Suessical, the Musical (FY09) was attended by 6,674 individuals  Opera4Kids brings performances to area middle schools  The Telephone (FY08) was presented in 11 schools and reached about 6,300 students  Le Docteur Miracle (FY09) was presented in 28 schools and reached about 6,557 students  In collaboration with Opera Guild of San Antonio, middle school students are invited to attend a dress rehearsal of a main-stage opera  The Elixir of Love (February 2008) – 1,500 students attended  The Mikado (March 2009) – 1,500 students attended
