  • 1 Economic Evaluation of Kukkarahalli Lake
1 ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF KUKKARAHALLI LAKE -A NEED FOR CONSERVATION H R UMA Abstract: A wetland is a land that is seasonally or permanently covered by shallow water, as well as land where the water table is close to or at the surface. Putting an economic value on something as abstract as the ecological services of a wetland is a difficult idea for most people. More commonly, the open market puts dollar values on society's goods and services. In the case of wetlands, there is no direct market for services such as clean water, maintenance of biodiversity, and flood control. There is, however, a growing recognition that such natural benefits do have real economic value and that these values need to be included in decision-making processes. This paper is an effort towards valuating Kukkarahalli Lake for the sake of conserving it for Mysoreans as well as for many including Birds who visit Mysore as a tourist spot . INTRODUCTION: According to the definition given by Ramsar convention in 1971 “wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peat land or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing; fresh, brackish, or salty, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six meters.'' A lake is a body of water or other liquid of considerable size surrounded entirely by land. A vast majority of lakes on earth are fresh water. Lakes may be natural or manmade. As a resource base, lakes have provided sustenance to millions down the ages; and as a landscape they have spawned cultural links and traditions.

  • Water Quality Analysis of River Tungabhadra Near Harihar
Vol-3 Issue-2 2017 IJARIIE-ISSN(O)-2395-4396 WATER QUALITY ANALYSIS OF RIVER TUNGABHADRA NEAR HARIHAR T M VINAY1 1 Assistant professor, CIVIL department, MCET, Telangana, India ABSTRACT River Tungabhadra flowing near Harihar taluk in Karnataka (India), receives waste water discharges from villages located on the bank of River and waste water discharged from industries located in Harihar. The present study involves the implementation of QUAL2KW model to determine the water quality status of this polluted our selected stretch of River. The River samples are collected for pre monsoon and lab results are used for calibrating the model. We observed that predicted values of the model are approximately in match with the observed values. Model results for pre-monsoon indicate decreasing quality of water from upstream to downstream for the selected segment. This is because of discharge of domestic waste water from Rajanahalli, Halasabalu and Nalawagal into River and due to release of waste water from industries located on banks of River in Harihar. Since many of the selected water quality parameters are exceeding their limits, water in the selected segment is not fit for drinking or it is not portable. Keyword: - Water quality, QUAL2KW, River pollution, River Tungabhadra. 1. INTRODUCTION Water pollution caused by increased industrialization and urbanization is considered to be the major problem which is faced by the mankind in India. The increase of water pollution in rivers results in decrease of DO concentration and increase of toxic chemicals concentration which ends up in death of aquatic animals like fishes which are further consumed by humans, affects their health [8].

Their abundance and composition are of Zoology, JSS College of Arts, ecological importance, as they are biological indicator sensitive organisms. They acts as main sources of Commerce and Science Ooty food for many fishes and plays an important element in early detection and monitoring the water Road, Mysuru, Karnataka, India pollution. Collection of Zooplanktons was carried out from two different water bodies (Akka and Tangi Pond) using planktonic net of mesh size 25µ. The plankton was fixed using 4% formalin and Lugol’s KS Raghunandan iodine solution. Observations were done under Leica Stereozoom Microscope (LX21M). Identification of Assistant Professor, Zooplanktons was carried out with an aid of taxonomic keys and scientific literatures. The prepared Postgraduate Department of Checklist revealed total of 28 different species of Zooplanktons, out of which Rotifers are dominated Zoology JSS College of Arts, (47.3%) with 15 species followed by Copepods (36.5%), Cladocera (11%) and Ostracods (5.2%) Commerce and Science Ooty respectively. Thus, this pioneer study will forms a baseline data for further Zooplankton studies in future. Road, Mysuru, Karnataka, India Keywords: Zooplanktons, Rotifera, Occurrence, Melukote, Karnataka 1.

International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), India Online ISSN: 2319-7064 Limnological Investigation and Zooplankton Diversity of Karanja River, Karnataka Umadevi .T1 1Associate Professor Department of Zoology Karnatak College, Bidar, Karnataka, India [email protected] Abstract: The abundance, composition and distribution of zooplankton in relation to water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, total dissolved salts total hardness and biochemical oxygen demand, were studied at monthly intervals from June 2011 to may2012 in Karanja river; Bidar at five locations selected. 36 species of zooplankton were identified as a total., which included 14species of rotifera 11 species of cladocera 8 species of copepoda and 3species of ostracoda...Dominant, rare and pollution indicators were studied. The affect of several physico-chemical parameters on the abundance and distribution of zooplankton is discussed. The investigation reveals that zooplankton better thrive in alkaline water and the water of Karanja river is fit for fish production and human use.
