Craig, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences ii CHAPTER ONE Lucy Sullivan first noticed she was disappearing on Monday morning as she prepared to return to work at the Field Museum. This was two weeks after Sean had died, at the peak of Chicago’s worst heat wave in history, and two weeks after she had asked, politely, for time and space alone. The apartment smelled of the worn-out sympathies of friends. Baskets of shriveled oranges and pears and wilting lilies and roses moldered on the coffee table and mantle above the fireplace in the living room and anywhere else Lucy had found room to place them. She was certain there were even more baskets waiting for her outside the door of the apartment. She hadn’t opened the door during her seclusion, hadn’t touched the fruit or watered the plants. The idea that a dozen oranges or a clichéd peace plant would alleviate her grief brought on such an unreasonable rage that she’d decided it was best to ignore the whole lot. Outside it was pitch black, except for the sickly yellow-white pools of light illuminating the empty, elevated train tracks above North Sedgwick Avenue. -

In the Pride of h Moment ENCOUNTERS IN JANE AUSTEN'S WORLD ft} V JOHN A. DUSSINGER John A . Dussinger argues that the strength of Jane Austens writing is found in the minute encounters that reveal a character s life rather than in the larger de sign of the story. In the Pride of the Mo ment contests the familiar view that Aus tens novels are stylistically polished but lacking in substance by showing that they give unusual significance to the most ordi nary events. Austens narrative strategy brings her characters together in an encounter, a radically focused interaction revealing nuances of behavior. Th e encounter con veys symbolically the participants' atti tudes and intentions; and if the nominal activity in the scene is significant in form ing political alignments, it also defines the alienation of the individuals outside that frame of reference. Such deliberately cho reographed performances reinforce the idea that the principal action in Austen's world is talking. The most immediate quality of such oral communication is the sense of its circumstantial uniqueness, its ability to place a character both as a social- class membe r and as an individual. When Austen began writing in the 1790s, she had available ample models in Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Sterne, Smollett, Fanny Burney, Maria Edge- worth, Charlotte Smith, Ann Radcliffe, and many other authors in the Steventon parsonage; but most striking from the first juvenile spoofs to her last, incomplete novel is her radically critical eye toward literary form in general and novelistic dis course in particular. Dussinger asserts that Austen, like these eighteenth-century novelists, found that imitating speech was a form of parody, and she employed it to ridicule affected social behavior as well as such literary fads as Gothic horror. -

The materials consist of 25 lessons, each containing some or all of the following components: a situational dialogue, vocabulary list and exercises, notes on specific grammatical constructions, review exercises, listening comprehension practice exercises keyed to a recorded text (not included), spelling exercises, and reading text. on Haitian geography and history. Lesson topics include introductions, getting and giving directions, school and classroom, clothing, objects of daily use, families, farming, telling time, laundry, describing things, travel and transportation, self- and medical care, shopping, food and restaurants, weather, magic and superstition, community life, and polite or socially appropriate behavior. The Chaplin Craze: Charlie Chaplin and the Emergence of Mass-Amusement Culture
THE CHAPLIN CRAZE: CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND THE EMERGENCE OF MASS-AMUSEMENT CULTURE JACK RUNDELL PhD UNIVERSITY OF YORK ENGLISH AND RELATED LITERATURE AUGUST 2014 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between Charlie Chaplin’s early career and films (1914-1916) and the emergent mass-amusement culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America. It combines empirical research into mass- amusement history with close readings of Chaplin’s early films in order to illuminate the close and previously minimally explored relationship between Chaplin’s film- making and popularity on the one hand, and the broader early twentieth-century history of mass-amusement culture on the other. The thesis approaches its subject through the specific phenomenon of amusement ‘crazes’. It takes three selectively illustrative examples – roller skating, popular dance forms and moving pictures – through which to explore the specific debates and controversies these amusements generated and the social and cultural aspirations and concerns that drove them. This cultural-historical research is used to re-read Chaplin films, enabling topical allusions and cultural subtexts to come newly into focus. It also provides the context for a fresh interpretation of Chaplin’s sensational rise to fame in the mid-1910s as a cultural phenomenon symptomatic of a wider landscape of contemporary frenetic and popular crazes. The thesis challenges two principal assumptions that underlie prevailing critical approaches to Chaplin’s early career, unquestioningly grounded, as they are, in the privileged status conventionally ascribed to his later, and better-known feature films. These assumptions are: (1) that Chaplin’s early films are chiefly of interest for the ways in which they teleologically anticipate later developments in his film- making; and (2) that Chaplin’s distinctive qualities and cultural value are always to be understood in qualitative contrast to the dominant imperatives of contemporary slapstick and the larger mass-amusement culture to which slapstick belonged. -

She was leaving soon, though, and Sawyer could not stay for that. So, he was leaving, too. Dr. Lanham expected Sawyer to finish the second year of his apprenticeship, but Sawyer didn’t much care for how utterly disappointed, sir, the doctor would be. Father would notice the missing money, but even if Sawyer took everything the man owned, it still would not be enough to make up for what Sawyer lost. If Sawyer could not fix his mother during the years she’d been dying slowly, he could not fix her now that she was dying fast, and he had no more reason to stay once she was gone. The stack of cash was damp with sweat when Sawyer dropped it into the salesman’s hand. Sawyer took many deep breaths as he pulled his Cadillac V-8 out of the lot. He had reached Arkansas when his mother was declared dead in Texas. The search for him began around the time he crossed the Maryland border. -

E PILOGUE: THE LITTLE TRAMP’S CONTINUING LONGEVITY, POST-1977 If it is still not clear from the preceding chapters that several factions of Americans came together post-1947 to force a re-assessment and even- tual re-invigoration of Charlie Chaplin and his Little Tramp persona in American culture, then the outpouring of love and admiration heaped upon him at his death must solidify this fact. Film critic Andrew Sarris noted in the Village Voice that “we can still say that Charles Chaplin was arguably the single most important artist produced by the cinema, cer- tainly its most extraordinary performer and probably still its most univer- sal icon.” 1 Alden Whitman’s New York Times obituary claimed that “no motion picture actor so captured and enthralled the world as did Charles Spencer Chaplin, a London ragamuffi n who became an immortal artist for his deft and effective humanization of man’s tragicomic confl icts with fate.” 2 And, fi lm critic Stanley Kauffmann wrote in The New Republic : Yes, the Tramp is not a deathless image. Yes, he made us laugh and cry and presumably always will. But, out of the Chaplin moments, put just two together and think of them, and you understand why talking about the Little Fellow is not enough. Think of the moment in The Rink when, with his torso almost motionless, his roller-skated feet move so quickly under him as he tries to keep his balance that his legs almost become a solid blur like the spinning spokes of a wheel. Then think of the last scene in City Lights when the formerly blind girl realizes that this little hobo was her savior, and then the camera goes to his face.
