Spring 2016 Sportsmanship, Behavior, & Conduct

We encourage and expect our student athletes to reflect the values of the community in which we live. Sportsmanship on and off the field is a core value of the District 7 community. It is critical that our student athletes understand that participating in extracurricular athletics is not just about winning and losing; it is also about learning to compete with integrity and with respect for one’s opponent.

We have that same expectation of sportsmanship for our fans. We are fortunate in District 7 to have spirited and loyal fans, and we thank you for your continued support. We know that in the heat of action that it’s easy for emotions to run high, but we encourage and expect our fans to demonstrate respect for our opponents, their fans, and the officials.

On behalf of District 7 students and staff, we want to thank the Board of Education for its continuing commitment to excellence - and, above all, we want to thank the communities that make up District 7 for their commitment to the Edwardsville Tiger tradition. Loyalty

We’re loyal to you, EHS. To your colors, we’re true, EHS. We’ll back you to stand ‘gainst the best in the land For we know you have sand, EHS. Rah, rah. So smash that blockade, EHS. Go crashing ahead, EHS. Our team is our fame protector. On EHS, for we expect a victory from you, EHS. Cha-he, cha-ha, cha-ha-ha-ha. Go, tigers, go! Cha-he, cha-ha, cha-ha-ha-ha. Go, tigers, go! EHS! EHS! EHS! Fling out that dear old flag – black, orange in hue. Lead on your sons and daughters fighting for you. Like men of old on giants, placing reliance, Shouting defiance, “Osky, wah, wah!” Amid the broad green plains that nourish our land, For honest labor and for learning we stand, And unto thee we pledge our heart and hand, Dear alma mater, EHS!

IHSA Mission Statement: The IHSA serves member schools by providing leadership for equitable participation in interscholastic athletics and activities that enrich the educational experience.

IHSA History: The Illinois High School Association, founded in 1900, is a not-for-profit organization of over 750 public and private high schools. The IHSA is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors, who are princi- pals of member schools. One member, the treasurer, is appointed by the Board and does not vote. Through its administrative staff of one executive director and eight assistant executive directors, the IHSA regulates interscholastic competition in 13 sports for boys and 13 sports for girls, as well as 7 non- athletic activities. The IHSA stages state final events in all of these sports and activities except music. The IHSA is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, a group of 51 state associations. The IHSA Offices are located in Bloomington, Illinois. Southwestern Conference Edwardsville is one of the founding members of the Southwestern Conference. The foundation of the current conference can be traced back to 1923-24 when the Southwest Conference was formed. The conference was dissolved and reformed in 1934-35 as the Madison-St. Clair Conference. The conference was renamed the Southwestern Conference in 1937-38. Current conference members include: Alton, Belleville East, Belleville West, Collinsville, East St. Louis, Edwardsville, Granite City, and O’Fallon. Edwardsville left the Southwestern Conference in 1979 for a period of 17 years. The Tigers rejoined the conference in 1996. The Tigers won two varsity league titles that first year back, and since then, they have won 17 All Sports trophies in the conference.

It is our belief that participation in athletics plays an important role in the development of well- rounded young people. We have no doubt that the lessons learned both on and off the field of play will serve our student athletes well in whatever direction they take in life. We encourage and expect our student athletes to reflect the values of the community in which we live. Sports- manship on and off the field is a core value of the District 7 community. III EGHM Foundation Working for the Students of District 7

The EGHM Foundation was established in the late 1970’s by the late John Hunter, Jr., for the sole purpose of supporting Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7. Mr. Hunter was a long-time Board of Education member and president of the school board. The foundation, a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is made up of members who are local business leaders from throughout the District 7 community. They hold the common belief that a strong school district is vital to quality communities. The foundation relies on the school district to identify the District’s needs. The focus of projects funded is providing direct benefit to as many students as possible. Major Projects In the late 1970’s, the foundation purchased the 50-acre tract of land that is now the Edwardsville High School Sports Complex. The foundation provided the school district with an option to purchase the land. The school district now has ownership of the property. In the 1980’s, the foundation provided funding to assist in the development of the property into the athletic complex it is today, serving football, baseball, soccer, softball, and band. When the new high school was constructed in the mid-90’s, the foundation provided funding for adding four courts, lighting, and office space for the tennis program, adding two lanes and an all-weather surface for the track, and completing portions of the fine arts auditorium, including curtains, lighting, and sound system. Since then, the foundation has purchased new band uniforms and band-related equipment, middle school athletic uniforms, and has provided funding for middle school intramural programming. The foundation provides shoes for needy children who are identified through individual schools. In addition, the foundation administers two scholarship programs benefiting Edwardsville High School seniors. Most recently, the foundation has provided funding for upgrades to facilities at the Sports Complex, behind the high school, and at Lincoln and Liberty Middle Schools. Source of Funding Funding for projects comes primarily from the local business community, though the organization does accept bequests.

IV Brick Paver Project Improving District 7 Sports Facilities

In conjunction with support from the EGHM Foundation, several athletic booster clubs have worked hard to raise the funds necessary to build, complete, and support the state-of-the-art athletic facilities that can be found throughout the school district, but especially at Edwardsville High School.

This fundraising was largely accomplished through the construction of brick courtyards in each location. Individuals and businesses that purchase the bricks and wall pieces are then represented in the courtyard. This fundraising effort continues.

We encourage everyone to show their support of EHS athletic teams and facilities by purchasing a brick paver or a wall block. The donation is tax deductible through the EGHM Foundation.

13 Varsity Coach Dave Lipe Following over 25 years in tennis, Coach Lipe has been the Head Boys and Girls Coach at EHS since the fall of 1994. During his tenure, the Tigers have enjoyed remarkable success including a dual match record of 349-78, 15 consecutive IHSA Sectional Titles, and 15 consecutive SWC Titles. The program has developed over 50 All-State athletes. The 2016 EHS Boys Team features one of the program’s toughest challenges. In addition to hosting two major varsity tournaments (The Spring Invitational and the Tiger Duals), the Tigers will make several trips to Chicago and a third entry in the Deco-Turf National Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This year’s team will be led by seniors and state qualifiers Luke Motley and Carson Ware. Returning Varsity squad members include Erik Weiler (junior), Alex Gray (sophomore), and Ben Bequette (Junior). New to the Varsity team this year are Dan Thomas (sophomore) and Logan Pursell (sophomore). Freshmen Zach Trimpe and Seth Lipe are also additions to the varsity lineup. Lakatos is in his twelfth year as a head track coach and has spent his last eight years at Edwardsville High School teaching math. In 2012, the EHS track team made history, achieving the highest place and scoring the most points in school history at the IHSA state meets. The Tigers accumulated 42 points and won the 2nd place state trophy. 2014 was another historic season for the Tigers as the track team captured its second IHSA state runner-up trophy in three years. Last year, the Tigers once again made history. After battling injuries and adversity all year, the season ended in fairy tale fashion. The seniors of 2015 ended their high school careers on top with the first state championship in Edwardsville boys’ track and field history. In 2016, the Tigers will miss the loaded 2015 senior class, but they have plenty of hungry young athletes ready to fill in. Last season as a sophomore, AJ Epenesa exploded onto the scene with one of the best discus throws in the country. He placed 2nd in the discus and 9th in the shot put at state in 2015 and is ready to take the next step in 2016. Right behind him in the shot put is Desmond Chapple who has already thrown state qualifying marks and will challenge the school record and compete for all-state honors. EHS has some talented jumpers returning. Tariq Minor is a seasoned veteran that is already putting up big marks in the triple jump so far this year. Levon Hendricks could jump state qualifying distances in the triple jump as well. Junior DeVonte’ Tincher started the 2016 season with a huge school record in the long jump and is capable of state qualifying marks in the triple jump. Justin White is a returning all-state high jumper. On the track, Edwardsville returns the silver medalist 110 high hurdler Travis Anderson, who is only a junior and has his sights set on being all-state in the 300 hurdles this year as well. The sprint relays look to continue their tradition of excellence led by Tincher, Anderson, seniors Seth Jacobs and Tommy Giacobbe, and junior Darryl Harlan. In the distance events, sophomore Franky Romano leads a core of young but talented runners. Roland Prenzler, Dan Powell, Wyatt Hennig and Jacob Schoenthal are a few runners to watch out for that have put up good marks early on this season. At the conference level, the EHS Tigers will look to win their 6th conference title in the last 7 years. At the state level, Edwardsville has the talent to compete for another state championship. They are capable of big points in the throws, hurdles, relays, and jumps. If the Tigers stay healthy and focused, they could add to their historic run of conference and state level hardware.
