Sportsmanship on and off the field is a core value of the District 7 community. It is critical that our student athletes understand that participating in extracurricular athletics is not just about winning and losing; it is also about learning to compete with integrity and with respect for one’s opponent. We have that same expectation of sportsmanship for our fans. We are fortunate in District 7 to have spirited and loyal fans, and we thank you for your continued support. We know that in the heat of action that it’s easy for emotions to run high, but we encourage and expect our fans to demonstrate respect for our opponents, their fans, and the officials. On behalf of District 7 students and staff, we want to thank the Board of Education for its continuing commitment to excellence - and, above all, we want to thank the communities that make up District 7 for their commitment to the Edwardsville Tiger tradition. Loyalty We’re loyal to you, EHS. To your colors, we’re true, EHS. We’ll back you to stand ‘gainst the best in the land For we know you have sand, EHS. Rah, rah. So smash that blockade, EHS. Go crashing ahead, EHS. Our team is our fame protector. On EHS, for we expect a victory from you, EHS. Cha-he, cha-ha, cha-ha-ha-ha. Go, tigers, go! Cha-he, cha-ha, cha-ha-ha-ha. Go, tigers, go! EHS! EHS! EHS! Fling out that dear old flag – black, orange in hue. Lead on your sons and daughters fighting for you. Like men of old on giants, placing reliance, Shouting defiance, “Osky, wah, wah!” Amid the broad green plains that nourish our land, For honest labor and for learning we stand, And unto thee we pledge our heart and hand, Dear alma mater, EHS! Edwardsville High School Athletics A Tradition of Excellence Edwardsville High School has a long tradition of athletic excellence. EHS has been selected as the St. Louis Post Dispatch top large school five times in the past eleven years. Edwardsville High School is recognized as one of the premier schools in the state of Illinois in academics, athletics, and fine arts. This success is the result of hard work and a culture of high expectations-part of “business as usual” for EHS. The school is fortunate to have talented and dedicated student-athletes, coaches, administration, parental and community support, summer improvement programs, and camaraderie among the staff. During the past decade, Edwardsville High School has earned numerous trophies in the various IHSA sports and has advanced to all of the twenty-two competitive sports championships in which it participates. The most recent State Championship was won by our Boys Track and Field team in the Spring of 2015. During the 2013-14 school year, the boys soccer team won a state championship in Class 3A, boys basketball placed fourth in Class 4A, and boys track and field brought home second place honors in Class 3A. IHSA History: The Illinois High School Association, founded in 1900, is a not-for-profit organization of over 750 public and private high schools. The IHSA is governed by an eleven-member Board of Directors, who are princi- pals of member schools. One member, the treasurer, is appointed by the Board and does not vote. Through its administrative staff of one executive director and eight assistant executive directors, the IHSA regulates interscholastic competition in 13 sports for boys and 13 sports for girls, as well as 7 non- athletic activities. The IHSA stages state final events in all of these sports and activities except music. The IHSA is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, a group of 51 state associations. The IHSA Offices are located in Bloomington, Illinois. Southwestern Conference Edwardsville is one of the founding members of the Southwestern Conference. The foundation of the current conference can be traced back to 1923-24 when the Southwest Conference was formed. The conference was dissolved and reformed in 1934-35 as the Madison-St. Clair Conference. The conference was renamed the Southwestern Conference in 1937-38. Current conference members include: Alton, Belleville East, Belleville West, Collinsville, East St. Louis, Edwardsville, Granite City, and O’Fallon. Edwardsville left the Southwestern Conference in 1979 for a period of 17 years. The Tigers rejoined the conference in 1996. The Tigers won two varsity league titles that first year back, and since then, they have won 17 All Sports trophies in the conference. It is our belief that participation in athletics plays an important role in the development of well- rounded young people. We have no doubt that the lessons learned both on and off the field of play will serve our student athletes well in whatever direction they take in life. We encourage and expect our student athletes to reflect the values of the community in which we live. Sports- manship on and off the field is a core value of the District 7 community. Mr. Hunter was a long-time Board of Education member and president of the school board. The foundation, a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is made up of members who are local business leaders from throughout the District 7 community. They hold the common belief that a strong school district is vital to quality communities. The foundation relies on the school district to identify the District’s needs. The focus of projects funded is providing direct benefit to as many students as possible. Major Projects In the late 1970’s, the foundation purchased the 50-acre tract of land that is now the Edwardsville High School Sports Complex. The foundation provided the school district with an option to purchase the land. The school district now has ownership of the property.

  • The Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship Presented by the Sports Commission Associates
THE CARL FRICKS SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTED BY THE SPORTS COMMISSION ASSOCIATES PAST RECIPIENTS | 2009 - 2017 LEOR GOLDFARB - 2017 LADUE HIGH SCHOOL The Sports Commission Associates awarded Leor Goldfarb its top Sportsmanship Scholarship honor for 2017. The Ladue varsity wrestling and lacrosse captain will receive $10,000 to begin his college education. Leor’s class, humility and selflessness eclipse any feat he has achieved on the field or on the mat. In the semifinals of the district wrestling tournament, Leor was down seven points to his opponent from Hannibal. Late in the second period, Leor was injured by an illegal slam from his opponent. The referee gave him two options: He could have his opponent disqualified for the illegal move and automatically advance to the state finals or forfeit the match and allow his opponent to advance. Leor chose to forfeit the match and let his opponent move on to state. In a letter to the Ladue superintendent, Hannibal coach Derek Greening said, “I am not sure how many individuals and coaches would make the same decision. It takes an enormous amount of character and class to make a decision like this. In 16 years of coaching, I have seen many students default for much less to guarantee themselves a win.” This is just one instance that exemplifies Leor’s sportsmanship. He’s known for being supportive of teammates and opponents alike, and as relayed by his athletic director, Leor “knows what happens in sports is greater than the outcome of the game or match being held.” MATT FERENCE - 2017 LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL Matt Ference played football and baseball at Lafayette High School, but it is the way he channeled his talent into remarkable kindness that makes him worthy of the Sportsmanship Scholarship.

  • Illinois Student Assistance Commission Announces 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars
Illinois Student Assistance Commission announces 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars December 5 2016 3:41 PM More Than 19,300 high school students recognized for outstanding academic achievement Deerfield, Ill. – The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is pleased to announce the names of the 2017-18 Illinois State Scholars. This year’s recipients join the ranks of other exceptional Illinois high school students honored with this prestigious designation. First introduced in 1958, Illinois State Scholars are recognized for their superior academic achievement. State Scholars rank in approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state. Honorees are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank. “I applaud all of the 2017-18 state scholars for their hard work and outstanding academic performance,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC executive director. “Students have a lot to contend with as they move through high school—from increased testing to extracurricular activities to highly competitive college admissions. Kudos to these students and also to the teachers, parents, coaches and other mentors who contributed to their success and helped them navigate a path towards college and career success.” While this recognition does not include a monetary prize, congratulatory letters from ISAC have been sent to honorees, and the agency has provided personalized Certificates of Achievement to each high school for distribution. A list of current Illinois State Scholars can also be found on ISAC’s website. ISAC encourages students interested in attending college next fall to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible to determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid.
