This event has rapidly grown to become one of the premier modelling events in western Canada. The 2010 event attracted modellers from the provinces of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and even the U.S. Over 600 models were entered in 93 categories, ensuring there was something for all interests and skill levels. GRAIN ELEVATORS AND MORE <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Members are encouraged to bring their entire family to Nanton for a fun-filled day enjoying our Planes, Trains, and Elevators event. As well as special activities at the museum, Ultimate Trains, and the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre, we will be welcoming the Museum of Miniatures to Nanton. This museum is new to Nanton. While the Lancaster is outside, the Rocky Mountain Model Club will be taking over Tables with models at a previous event. CAREERS IN AVIATION 5 Together with other aviation museums across Canada, high school students in Nanton were introduced to careers in aviation as part of a February 7, National Aviation Day program. The second annual Joe English Memorial Fly-in breakfast will be held July 23 at the AJ Flying Ranch north of Nanton. As usual, A few of the aircraft that attended last year. the Nanton and District Lions Club will be serving up a pancake breakfast from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.. The idea of having an annual fly-in was originally proposed by Nanton resident and ex-Lancaster pilot, Joe English. Joe was a long-time Nanton Lancaster Society board member and supporter of the museum. With his passing away in 2010, it was decided that subsequent fly-ins should be a memorial to him. About the Author Terry Leversedge was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, while his father was serving at Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Station Moose Jaw. He later graduated from the Royal Military College, Kingston, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1979, and then received a Masters degree in aerospace vehicle design from the Cranfield Institute of Technology in the United Kingdom. His career in military aerospace engineering encompassed a wide number of positions at both field units and within the headquarters of the RCAF, before he retired after 35 years of service at the rank of Brigadier General. Now an aviation consultant and amateur historian, he is the author of other commercially available books on Canadian military aviation subjects and has published numerous articles as the Editor-In-Chief at Airforce magazine, the flagship publication of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association.

    CANADA AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM AIRCRAFT CANADAIR CL-13B / F-86 SABRE MK 6 RCAF GOLDEN HAWKS SERIAL 23651 Introduction In August 1949, Canadair Limited, located at the Cartierville Airport facilities near Montreal, and the Department of National Defence (DND) signed a contract for the manufacture under license of 100 of the most advanced swept-wing day fighter aircraft of the time, the North American Aviation (NAA) F-86 Sabre. Assigned the Canadair model number CL-13, this order led to the largest aircraft production run in Canadair’s history. From 1949 to October 1958, Canadair Limited went on to produce some 1,815 examples of the famed fighter, in models ranging from the Sabre Mark (Mk) 1 up to the ultimate Sabre Mk 6 series, with a few special experimental models emanating from the production batches. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was the prime customer for the majority of these aircraft, but the power and reputation of the Canadian-built examples had other nations sit up and take notice, eventually culminating in numerous orders to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and non-NATO countries. Canadair delivered versions of the CL-13 Sabre to the United States, Britain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany, Columbia, and South Africa. RCAF variants served domestically training pilots and crews, and performed an important role in the Canadian commitment to provide a European air contingent for NATO operations. Some of the Canadian-based RCAF units wished to proudly show off their shiny new jet mounts to the general public, seeing as they were paying for them in one way or another, and permission was eventually granted for limited public expositions.

Canadair CL-28 Argus Mark I Argus 10719 of 415 Squadron on maritime patrol. From Greek mythology, the “Argus” was an all-seeing creature with 100 eyes. This name was appropriate due to the numerous highly sophisticated sensing devices carried on board, with antennas everywhere. Note the large nose radome of the Mark I. Protruding from the tail is the MAD Boom, a Magnetic Anomaly Detector which detects the magnetic field surrounding a steel submarine. The Canadian-built, Canadair Argus was a unique hybrid that employed the wings, tail surfaces and undercarriage of the British designed Bristol Britannia transport aircraft, married to a completely new unpressurized fuselage of Canadian design and equipped with different American-designed engines. One of the most effective anti-submarine warfare aircraft of its day, the Argus was a mainstay for the RCAF in the maritime role. The principal difference between the Mark I and Mark II was primarily in the different navigation, communication and tactical electronic equipment fitted internally. Externally, the Mark II exhibited a redesigned smaller nose radome and additional ECM antennae above the fuselage. The Argus replaced the Lancaster and Neptune aircraft types and eventually, the Argus was itself to be replaced by the current Lockheed CP-140 Aurora aircraft. The Argus flew with the Maritime Proving & Evaluation Unit and the following Squadrons: 404, 405, 407, 415, and 449.

    TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2019 Volume 61, #19 75th anniversary of 407 Squadron aircraft forced landing in Norway 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron Chief Warrant Officer CWO Serge Harvey meets with the latest generation of descendants of the Milorg, local residents, and the Canadian crew at a small wooden cabin in the mountains named “Little Canada” – the place where the Canadians hid while the Milorg coordinated an escape from Norway back to Allied territory. The six-man crew of the Vickers Armstrong Wellington GR Mk XIV bomber, a grandfather of today’s CP-140 Aurora, were flying an anti-submarine patrol over Norwegian waters on September 26, 1944, when one of the plane’s two engines caught fire. While his career was in aviation, the substance of this story is about far more than just airplanes, airports and airlines. His words reflect keen observations of those things, but also the times, the places, and the interactions between the people with whom he shared his life in aviation. Such interactions are not bound by time, geography or industry, but rather reveal universal truths regarding human nature. Peter has said that he primarily intends this book to "rekindle warm aviation memories for pilots everywhere", and it certainly succeeds in that regard. Many of his contemporaries - a group among which I am counted - worked their way along similar paths from first flight to retirement, and they will be flooded with memories arising from the fog of events thought long-forgotten, even as they enjoy the way in which he leads them through his own recollections of those earlier times.

    TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2019 Volume 61, #20 Cpl Boucher-Cookson and Avr Lepine, members of 19 Operations Support Squadron (OSS) Telecom Flight, were selected to represent 19 Wing Comox in Operation DISTINCTION, a national commemoration program that began in 2012. The pair stood guard at the National War Memorial, a cenotaph symbolizing the sacrifice of all CAF personnel who have served Canada in time of war in the cause of peace and freedom, past, pres- ent and future. In 2000, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added in the front of the memorial. The tomb contains the remains of an unknown Canadian soldier from a war cemetery near Vimy Ridge, France. CAF members have been guarding the site since 2007. Cpl Boucher-Cookson and Avr Lepine were quickly integrated in the honor guard team, keeping a watchful eye on the monument from September 9 to October 21. It is im- portant to create links to the past, acknowledge our national and international achievements that have shaped and grown our country, and ensure the memory of the fallen and the sacrifices of war are remembered for years to come.
