According to media and informant reports, untold thousands of Uyghurs and other Muslims have been and are being detained in clandestine political re-education facilities, with major implications for society, local economies and ethnic relations. Considering that the Chinese state is currently denying the very existence of these facilities, this paper investigates publicly available evidence from official sources, including government websites, media reports and other Chinese internet sources. First, it briefly charts the history and present context of political re-education. Second, it looks at the recent evolution of re-education in Xinjiang in the context of ‘de-extremification’ work. Finally, it evaluates detailed empirical evidence pertaining to the present re-education drive. With Xinjiang as the ‘core hub’ of the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing appears determined to pursue a definitive solution to the Uyghur question. Since summer 2017, troubling reports emerged about large-scale internments of Muslims (Uyghurs, Kazakhs and Kyrgyz) in China's northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). By the end of the year, reports emerged that some ethnic minority townships had detained up to 10 percent of the entire population, and that in the Uyghur-dominated Kashgar Prefecture alone, numbers of interned persons had reached 120,000 (The Guardian, January 25, 2018). -

M., 15. 11. 2006 Neogene Rhinoceroses of the Linxia Basin (Gansu, China) With 4 fi gs, 2 tabs Tao DENG Abstract Ten genera and thirteen species are recognized among the rhinocerotid remains from the Miocene and Pliocene deposits of the Linxia Basin in Gansu, China. Chilotherium anderssoni is reported for the fi rst time in the Linxia Basin, while Aprotodon sp. is found for the fi rst time in Lower Miocene deposits of the basin. The Late Miocene corresponds to a period of highest diversity with eight species, accompanying very abundant macromammals of the Hipparion fauna. Chilotherium wimani is absolutely dominant in number and present in all sites of MN 10–11 age. Compared with other regions in Eurasia and other ages, elasmotheres are more diversifi ed in the Linxia Basin during the Late Miocene. Coelodonta nihowanensis in the Linxia Basin indicates the known earliest appearance of the woolly rhino. The distribution of the Neogene rhinocerotids in the Linxia Basin can be correlated with paleoclimatic changes. Applicant UNESCO Global Geopark Linxia, People’s Republic of China Geographical and geological summary 1. Physical and human geography Linxia Geopark is situated in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, People's Republic of China. The geographical coordinates are 103°02′19.08′′-103°38′21.06′′E; 35°14′37.43′′-36°09′10.87′′N, with a total area of 2120 km2. Linxia Geopark stretches across two natural regions, that is, the arid area of the Loess Plateau in Northwest China and the alpine humid area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Geopark, high in the southwest and low in the northeast, is in the shape of a sloping basin with an average elevation of 2000m. The Geopark is in a temperate continental climate zone with annual average temperature of 5.0- 9.4°C. The annual precipitation is 260-660mm, and the rainfall is mostly concentrated between June and September. The Geopark is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River basin and has abundant surface water. Most parts are covered with aeolian loess parent material. The distribution of natural vegetation varies widely with very prominent zonality. The Geopark involves six counties (cities) including Yongjing County, Hezheng County, Dongxiang County, Linxia City, Guanghe County, and Linxia County in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, and 66 townships. The Geopark has a population of 1.166 million, with 31 nations including Hui, Han, Dongxiang, Baoan, Salar, and so on. In the north of the Geopark, Yongjing County is 74km away from the provincial capital Lanzhou, and in the south, Hezheng is 116km away from Lanzhou. -

To assess iodine status in vulnerable groups of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, China. We selected 5 villages in the east, south, west, north and center of 8 counties of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture randomly. In each village, one primary school was identified and 80 students aged 8-10 years were randomly selected. At the same time, 20 pregnant women, 20 lactating women, 20 women of childbearing age and 20 young children (0-3 years) were randomly selected via existing township health center lists. The iodine content of household salt and drinking water and the urine in four population subsets (except school-aged children) was measured. The thyroids were examined in school-aged children. The iodine content in most household drinking water (90.2%) was less than 10μg/L. The percentage of households using adequately iodized salt was 83.2% and percentage of households using non-iodized salt was as high as 15%. The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of pregnant and lactating women, and women of child-bearing age was 89, 85 and 90μg/L, respectively, indicating an iodine deficiency. The median UIC of 0-3 year old babies was 107μg/L. The goiter rates of school-aged children were 10.6% by ultrasound and 9.9% by palpation. -

Pathogenic Leishmania Spp. Detected in Lizards from Northwest China

BMC Veterinary Research (2019) 15:446 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12917-019-2174-4 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Pathogenic Leishmania spp. detected in lizards from Northwest China using molecular methods Jun-Rong Zhang1, Xian-Guang Guo2, Han Chen1, Jin-Long Liu2,3, Xiong Gong2, Da-Li Chen1* and Jian-Ping Chen1* Abstract Background: Leishmaniosis, a disease caused by pathogenic Leishmania parasites, remains an unresolved health problem in the New World and the Old World. It is well known that lizards can be infected by a subgenus of Leishmania parasites, i.e. Sauroleishmania, which is non-pathogenic to humans. However, evidence suggests that lizards may also harbor pathogenic Leishmania species including the undetermined Leishmania sp., discovered in our previous work. Leishmania DNA in lizard blood can be detected by using molecular methods, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Three hundred and sixteen lizards, representing 13 species of four genera, were captured for blood samples collection in Northwest China. Two reliable molecular markers (cytochrome b and heat shock protein 70 genes) were used for detection in the lizard blood samples, to confirm a widespread presence of pathogenic Leishmania parasites and the distribution pattern of Leishmania spp. in lizards from Northwest China. The PCR data indicated positive detection rate for Leishmania in all the tested lizards with an overall prevalence of 57.91% (183/316). Apart from lizard parasites like Leishmania tarentolae and Leishmania sp., several pathogenic Leishmania including L. turanica, L. tropica and L. donovani complex were identified by using phylogenetic analysis. Co-existence of different haplotypes was observed in most Leishmania DNA-positive lizards with an overall rate of 77.6% (142/183). -

It does not need to be read entirely before the conference. The breakdown of centralized states after the fall of the Roman empire led a number of groups in Europe turning to large-scale pillaging as their primary source of income. Most notably the Vikings and Mongols. As these groups were usually small and needed to move fast, building fortifications was the most efficient way to provide refuge and protection. Leading to virtually all large cities having city walls. The fortifications evolved over the course of the middle ages and with it, the battle techniques and technology used to defend or siege heavy forts and castles. Designers of castles focused a lot on defending entrances and protecting gates with drawbridges, portcullises and barbicans as these were the usual week spots. A detailed ref- erence guide of various technologies and strategies is compiled on the following pages. Dur- ing the third crusade and before the invention of gunpowder the advantages and the balance of power and logistics usually favoured the defender. Another major advancement and change since the Roman empire was the invention of the stirrup around 600 A.D. (although wide use is only mentioned around 900 A.D.). The stirrup enabled armoured knights to ride war horses, creating a nearly unstoppable heavy cavalry for peasant draftees and lightly armoured foot soldiers. With the increased usage of heavy cav- alry, pike infantry became essential to the medieval army. -

Unterschrift, Datum Preface Lanzhou is the capital city of Gansu province in Northwest China. My decision to study in- dustrial development in Lanzhou is related to my personal experience. In 1992 I heard of “sustainable development” for the first time through radio. My intuition told me that popula- tion growth had much to do with the sustainability of socio-economic development in such underdeveloped areas as my hometown. This, together with others, explained my decision to focus on population geography when I was a graduate student from 1994 to 1997. During my study as a graduate student, I participated in several research programmes concerning the rela- tionship between population growth, economic development, resource utility and ecological evolution. My findings showed that the severely degenerating environment, quick increasing and badly educated population, backward agricultural economy with a low production effi- ciency are common features of a large number of areas in Gansu province. I was so disap- pointed that I did not have any feelings of regional sustainable development, regardless of the “rich” northern oasis-desert areas, the poor middle half-drought loess plateau areas, or the very poor southern mountain areas.
