THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW Der Musical-Knigge Zum Kult, der im Lauf der Jahre um das Musical entstanden ist, gehört neben dem Erscheinen in ROCKY-HORROR-SHOW-Kostümierung vor allem die aktive Beteiligung der Zuschauer in bestimmten Szenen. In unserer ROCKY-HORROR-Tüte, die vor den Vorstellungen im Foyer verkauft wird, befinden sich die Requisiten: Reis, Zeitung, Wasserpistole, Knicklicht, Toilettenpapier, Konfetti und Bierdeckel-Toast. Die Verwendungen dieser Requisiten während der Vorstellung sind unterstrichen. Bei folgenden Szenen kann das Publikum mitwirken: Die Hochzeitsszene: Hier wird mit Reis geworfen. Die Gewitter-Szene: 1) Das Publikum bedeckt die Köpfe mit einer Zeitung. 2) Der Regen selbst stammt aus Wasserpistolen. 3) Zur Zeile „there’s a light …“ (= „da ist ein Licht …“) werden die Knicklichter angezündet. Janet: Nach jeder Erwähnung des Namens „Janet“ wird laut „WeisSSS“ gerufen. Eddie: Jedes Mal, wenn sein Name genannt wird, ruft das Publikum „Schscht!“. Der „Time Warp“: Wenn das Lied gespielt wird, tanzt das Publikum mit. „Sweet Transvestite“: Wenn Frank N. Furter eine Kunstpause bei dem Wort „anticipation“ (= „Erwartung“) macht, wird „Say it!“ (= „Sag es!“) gerufen. Die Geburt von Rocky: Das Publikum unterstützt die Szene, in der Rocky aus seinen Bandagen gewickelt wird, mit dem Werfen von Toilettenpapierrollen. Der „Charles Atlas Song“: Am Ende des Charles Atlas Songs schreiten Frank N‘ Furter und Rocky in Richtung Schlafzimmer, das Publikum wirft dabei Konfetti. Dr. Scott: Jedes Mal, wenn sein Name genannt wird, wird vom Publikum ein Donnergrollen durch ein gemeinsames langgezogenes "HU!"-Rufen simuliert. Die „Dinner-Szene“: Wenn Frank N‘ Furter sein Glas erhebt und sagt „Ein Toast!“, werfen alle mit Toastbrotscheiben (Bierdeckel mit Toast-Aufdruck). Audition Information AUDITIONS: September 11, 2021, 1:00PM This is a general audition, no appointment necessary. Please feel free to arrive a few minutes early to get settled before the auditions begin at 1pm. LOCATION: NorShor Theatre Rehearsal Studios, 211 East Superior Street, 3rd floor. Please enter through the "Lights on Duluth" door on Superior St next to the Box Office. Then take the stairs or elevator up to the third floor (N3). The rehearsal studios are down the hall to the right. PREPARATION: Watch the movie. Be prepared to learn the Time Warp. If auditioning for a specific role, please prepare the song selection listed next to character names below. Please bring a résumé, headshot, and audition form to your audition. Due to the nature and content of the show, participants must be 18 years of age by the time of auditions! MASKS: Masks are currently required to be worn by everyone inside the Norshor. Actors will be allowed to remove their mask when they are in the act of performing.

This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Glee and the “Ghosting” of the Musical Theatre Canon
89 Barrie Gelles Graduate Center, City University of New York, US Glee and the “Ghosting” of the Musical Theatre Canon The most recent, successful intersection of media culture and the Broadway musical is the run-away hit Glee. Although Glee features other music genres as often as it does songs from the musical theatre canon, the use of the latter genre offers a particularly interesting opportunity for analysis as it blends two forms of popular culture: the Broadway musical and a hit television show. Applying the concept of “ghosting,” as defined in Marvin Carlson’s The Haunted Stage, I propose that the use of the musical theatre canon in Glee can sometimes offer a more complex reading of a given plot point and/or of character development. This inquiry will consider where the ghosting of the original Broadway musical enhances plot and character within Glee, and where it fails to do so. What is there to gain from doubled layers of implications when these songs are performed? What is risked by ignoring the “ghosts” of musicals past? Finally, and tangentially related, how is Glee reframing the consumption of musical theatre? Barrie Gelles is a fellowship student in the PhD Program in Theatre at The Graduate Center at CUNY. She completed her Masters, in Theatre, at Hunter College and has a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. In addition to Barrie’s scholarly pursuits, she directs theatre throughout New York City. ‘G IVE YOURSELVES OVER TO ABSOLUTE PLEASURE ’: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW ’S QUEERING OF COUNTERCULTURE FILM Monica MICHLIN Université Paris IV - Sorbonne Jim Sharman’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), the filmic adaptation of the Richard O’Brien musical, stands out among other musical films of the counter-culture. It is remarkable for its excess, its energy, its humor, its mocking of traditional gender codes and its pronounced taste for the “visually abysmal” both in the meaning of camp and its mise en abyme of icons of both high and low visual culture—from Michelangelo’s David to Charles Atlas ads, and from Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931) to King Kong (Cooper and Schoedsack, 1933) to The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939)—in a pastiche and parody of genre films. While it is, itself, a hodge-podge of musical 1 and horror story, a warped romantic comedy and a science fiction farce, it deploys its unique countercultural energy in its Dionysian celebration of its queer main character, Dr. Frank’n’Furter, a transvestite avatar of Dr. Frankenstein, played by Tim Curry. In highlighting how its queering of genres is meshed with the queering of gender, and the hedonistic celebration of “performance,” I will stress how the film’s deliberately provocative visual and narrative techniques, as well as its constant celebration of excess and chaos prompt the audience to warp it in turn and, in a mise en abyme of the carnivalesque, to break down the fourth wall in the way fan communities started to do one year after the film’s release, in midnight performances, arguably making it to this day the ultimate cult film of the mid-seventies.

Dammit, Janet: If you love Rocky Horror, don’t miss RKO Con It’s just a jump to the left, then a step to the right … into Downcity Providence. It’s time for RKO Con 2019. RKO Con is a celebration of 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A commercial flop in its initial release, the movie was re-released as a midnight showing in 1976 at the Waverly Theatre in New York City and was selling out, with many people seeing the show multiple times. It gained so much popularity that people started interacting with the show — yelling insults and praises, and throwing things (hot dog, anyone?) during the movie screenings to show their enthusiasm. It’s through this tradition that the cult following of The Rocky Horror Picture Show was born, and from that, shadow casts began gaining popularity. Shadow casts are the dedicated lovers of Rocky Horror who don costumes, makeup and sometimes a motorcycle to act out the film in front of the screen while The Rocky Horror Picture Show plays behind them. Picture it, you see Eddie singing “Hot Patootie,” and in front of it, there’s someone dressed as Eddie mimicking his motions, dance moves and generally rocking out to the song, just like you would in the privacy of your own living room. In RI and the local Massachusetts area, if you’ve gone to see a Rocky Horror movie, you’ve seen the RKO Army. The RKO Army takes its shadow cast name from RKO Pictures (meaning Radio-Keith-Orpheum), which is a film production company that is referenced in Rocky Horror.
