In reality, Ahigher education has a history of 2,350 years in the continent. In the last two decades, enrollment dramatically increased by 170% between 1999 and 2002; numerically rising from 3.53 million to 9.54 million in 2012. These dramatic increases in enrollment in higher education was not matched with the human and infrastructural capacities in many African universities. Between 1992 and 2003, the Rockefeller Foundation noticed this gap in sub-Saharan Africa and supported a regional initiative “Forum on the higher education, science, technology and innovation Agriculture Resource Husbandry-FORUM” involving 10 ecosystem. From inception, RUFORUM has paid great universities in five countries (Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, attention to the partnership brokerage, mentorship and Uganda and Zimbabwe). AC 2009-238: CIVIL ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT JUBA UNIVERSITY, SOUTH SUDAN AND UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA Richard Nyarsuk, University of Florida Richard is a graduate student at the University of Florida. Fazil Najafi, University of Florida Nick Safai, Salt Lake City College Page 14.324.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009 CIVIL ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF JUBA, SOUTHERN SUDAN Abstract Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that encompasses design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure. It is the oldest engineering disciplines after military engineering. Unlike the other disciplines, it is both an art and science that could be traced back to the early civilization (4000 to 2000 BC) in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. And it is a science that makes man and nature live in harmony. It has moved through a number of technological interfaces to reach its current stage. To maintain its integrity, it is imperative that the curricula be regularly revised to meet the ever-demanding economical, social and environmental needs of the society. In most universities, civil engineering under graduate program is four years. University of Juba has five years undergraduate program. The College of Engineering at the University of Florida has 11 academic departments while the College of Engineering at the University of Juba has 5 different departments. However, due to the nascent level of the industry, there is limited and scattered information on what is taking place in the microfinance industry in Uganda. This Microfinance Industry Assessment study tries to compile information on various issues on the microfinance industry and gives an over-view of the general financial sector in Uganda, development and trends in the microfinance industry and issues on regulation of the sector. It provides a wealth of information and knowledge on what microfinance in Uganda is all about, how it fits into the overall financial sector and the role of various stakeholders in the industry. As a national Network for Ugandan microfinance practitioners and stakeholders, the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU), has been involved in all the different stages of development of the MF industry.
