Nejprve analyzuje již existující žebříčky vysokoškolských institucí v Číně, z nichž určuje dva za dostatečně propracované s podloženými metodikami. Jedná se o rankingy univerzit sestavované Asociací absolventů čínských univerzit a internetovým portálem Netbig.com. Poté je sestaven vlastní ranking, který více zohledňuje potřeby českých studentů ucházejících se o studium na čínských univerzitách. Hlavní cíl práce spočívá v sestavení nového žebříčku čínských univerzit, který by mohl zvýšit rozhodovací komfort českých uchazečů o studium při výběru vhodné čínské vysoké školy. Přestože hledisko naplnění účelu žebříčku bylo při jeho tvorbě akcentováno, kvůli omezenému přístupu ke zdrojovým datům se do nově vzniklého žebříčku nepodařilo zakomponovat všechna kritéria srovnání univerzit, která by mohla významně přispět ke zvýšení rozhodovacího komfortu českých studentů. Nově vzniklý žebříček zohledňuje hodnocení aktivit univerzit ve třech oblastech – ve výuce, vědě a výzkumu a mezinárodním zapojení. Nicméně ranking z velké části kopíruje své dva čínské konkurenty, když využívá jejich dílčích výsledků. Jako všechny vícekriteriální žebříčky, i nově vzniklý ranking využívá k sestavení celkového pořadí institucí vážený průměr výsledků dosažených v jednotlivých kritériích. Aby se minimalizovala arbitrárnost přidělení vah kritériím, byla využita Saatyho metoda stanovení vah. Avšak ani ta nedokáže zcela odstranit určitou míru subjektivnosti ze způsobu přidělení vah. Proto je součástí práce i elektronická verze žebříčku v programu MS Excel, kde si mohou uživatelé nastavit váhy jednotlivých kritérií žebříčku tak, aby vyhovoval jejich konkrétním potřebám. To spolu se správnou interpretací výsledků může vést ke zvýšení jejich rozhodovacího komfortu při výběru vhodné čínské univerzity. Klíčová slova: Čína, čínské vysoké školství, ranking, terciární vzdělávání, univerzity, vysoká škola, žebříček univerzit. i ABSTRACT The thesis disserts upon a ranking of Chinese universities. Firstly, it analyses the existing rankings and league tables of the Chinese universities. Two of them are regarded as adequately subtle and with well-founded methodology – the ranking of Chinese Universities Alumni Association and ranking of the website Netbig.com. Secondly, a new ranking of Chinese universities is designed to reflect the needs of Czech students who are considering to undertake tertiary education in China. The main objective of the work consists in creation of such a ranking of Chinese universities that would enhance the decision-making comfort of choosing a suitable university in China for the Czech applicants. Although meeting the purpose of the ranking was accented all the time, due to limited access to source data, not all the criteria which would boost the decision-making comfort could be included. Newly created ranking evaluates activities of the universities in three areas – education, research and science and international engagement. Nevertheless the created ranking replicates in great part its two Chinese predecessors as it builds on their results. Like other multicriterial rankings, the newly formed one uses weighted average of the scores gained by each university in each criterion to determine a single rank of the institutions. To minimize the arbitrariness of allocation of the weights, Saaty Method has been applied. However this could not fully erase certain degree of subjectivity in the weight allocation. Therefore the work includes an electronic version of the ranking (in MS Excel) which enables the users to set the weights in such a way, that it complies with their specific needs. This along with correct interpretation of results of the ranking may lead to increasing their decision-making comfort when choosing the suitable Chinese university to study. Redevelopment of historic city centers that characterized this change has been rampant and resulted in the loss of significant historic resources. Despite these losses, substantial historic neighborhoods survive and even thrive with some degree of integrity. This dissertation identifies the multiple social, political, and economic factors that contribute to the protection and preservation of these neighborhoods by examining neighborhoods in the cities of Beijing and Pingyao as case studies. One focus of the study is capturing the perspective of residential communities on the value of their neighborhoods and their capacity and willingness to become involved in preservation decision-making. The findings indicate the presence of a complex interplay of public and private interests overlaid by changing policy and economic limitations that are creating new opportunities for public involvement. Although the Pingyao case study represents a largely intact historic city that is also a World Heritage Site, the local ii focus on tourism has disenfranchised residents in order to focus on the perceived needs of tourists.

In Pursuit of the Great Peace: Han Dynasty Classicism and the Making of Early Medieval Literati Culture Abstract This dissertation is focused on communities of people in the Han dynasty (205 B.C.-A.D. 220) who possessed the knowledge of a corpus of texts: the Five Classics. Previously scholars have understood the popularity of this corpus in the Han society as a result of stiff ideology and imperial propaganda. However, this approach fails to explain why the imperial government considered them effective to convey propaganda in the first place. It does not capture the diverse range of ideas in classicism. This dissertation concentrates on Han classicists and treats them as scholars who constantly competed for attention in intellectual communities and solved problems with innovative solutions that were plausible to their contemporaries. This approach explains the nature of the apocryphal texts, which scholars have previously referred to as shallow and pseudo-scientific.

Within two decades, from 1998 to 2017, the number of Chinese students enrolled in degree programs abroad jumped by 590 percent to more than 900,000, making China the largest sending country of international students worldwide by far, according to UNESCO statistics. This massive outflow of international students from the world’s largest country—a nation of 1.4 billion people—has had an unrivaled impact on global higher education. The presence of large numbers of Chinese students on university campuses in Western countries is now a ubiquitous phenomenon. There are three times more Chinese students enrolled internationally than students from India, the second-largest sending country. The expenditures and tuition fees paid by these students have become an increasingly important economic factor for universities and local economies in countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In Australia, for instance, 30 percent of all international students were Chinese nationals in 2017. These students generated close to USD$7 billion in onshore revenues helping to make international education Australia’s largest services export. China’s own education system has simultaneously undergone an unprecedented expansion and modernization. It’s now the world’s largest education system after the number of tertiary students surged sixfold from just 7.4 million in 2000 to nearly 45 million in 2018, while the country’s tertiary gross enrollment rate (GER) spiked from 7.6 percent to 50 percent (compared with a current average GER of 75 percent in high income countries, per UNESCO).
