Alongside E4 broadcasting the new series of the show, Sci-Fi were also broadcasting all the older episodes, which ran all the way up to the end of Season 7. By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

  • Custom and Tradition in a Modern Early Banjo Revival
ABSTRACT Title of Document: NINETEENTH-CENTURY BANJOS IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY: CUSTOM AND TRADITION IN A MODERN EARLY BANJO REVIVAL Greg C. Adams, M.A., 2012 Directed By: Professor J. Lawrence Witzleben, School of Music This thesis demonstrates how members of a modern music revival use the banjo to create a counter narrative to America’s whiteness. Within this revival, nineteenth- century banjos are central to a growing interest in antebellum, early minstrel, and Civil War era music and culture. As researchers, collectors, musicians, and instrument builders pursue this interest, they explore the dissonances of the legacies surrounding slavery, blackface minstrelsy, and the traumas of the American Civil War. Framing this phenomenon within Eric Hobsbawm’s theories of custom and tradition and Thomas Turino’s concepts of habits, socialization, and cultural cohort relationships, I argue that this modern revival supports a form of critical ethnography aimed for advocacy on three fronts—advocacy that challenges marginalizing stereotypes, promotes opportunities to rethink the banjo’s cultural significance as a national instrument of whiteness, and creates greater infrastructure for the knowledge and material culture amassed by members of the banjo community. An endless black tapestry, dusted with stars, reaches into eternity. Then out of the SILENCE A METEOR SHOWER streaks past. The last fragments of a dead planet hurling through space. Cradled in the center of the maelstrom is a TINY METALLIC CRAFT. A lifeboat from a faraway world, carrying the only survivor of a million-year-old civilization. Its surface shimmers like quicksilver. As the craft hurtles past a familiar yellow sun, its final destination is revealed -- EARTH. SMASH CUT TO: A SEA OF CORNFIELDS stretching as far as the eye can see. The vast golden quilt CREAKS as it sways in time to the soft PERCUSSION of insects. Suddenly, a RUMBLE echoes and a HELICOPTER shoots overhead. Its rotors furiously whip the rows of corn, disrupting the timeless pastoral tranquility. The words "LUTHOR CORP" glint on the craft's metal skin. As the chopper ROARS over the narrow ribbon of blacktop that dissects the field, THE CAMERA STAYS ON the sign that's planted by the roadside. "WELCOME TO SMALLVILLE, KANSAS, POP. 25,001. CREAMED CORN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!" INT. HELICOPTER - DAY LIONEL LUTHOR /•**- sits in the back, reading The Daily Planet.
