From this week, Richo will return home to Wednesdays at 8:00pm as Australia’s ultimate political insider brings his unique insights into a range of the day’s topics, not just politics. Angelos Frangopoulos, Australian News Channel CEO said: “Richo has been working his way back to a full on-air workload since undergoing life-saving surgery more than a year ago. He is an outstanding commentator and we’re delighted to see him back on Wednesday nights.” Richo’s return to Wednesday nights will see a number of changes to the primetime schedule. Peta Credlin joins Alan Jones as co-host on Jones & Co, Tuesdays at 8:00pm. SKY NEWS IN AUSTRALIA In a pre-echo of the current buyout bid in the UK, Sky News Australia, previously jointly- owned with other media owners, became wholly owned by the Murdochs on December 1 last year. When the CPBF made its submission on the Commitment to Broadcasting Standards EIN to Ofcom in March there were three months of operation by which to judge the direction of the channel, but now there are three months more. A number of commentaries have been published. The Murdoch entity that controls Sky Australia is News Corporation rather than 21FC but the service is clearly following the Fox formula about which the CPBF commented to Ofcom. Indeed it is taking the model of broadcasting high-octane right-wing political commentary in peak viewing times even further. While Fox News has three continuous hours of talk shows on weekday evenings, Sky News Australia has five.

Climate Law 1 (2010) 325–327 325 DOI 10.3233/CL-2010-015 IOS Press Notes from the field Reflections on climate politics in a sunburnt country Greg Picker1 The Australian polity has shifted dramatically on climate change policy, moving—in less than a year—from a committed bipartisan support for an emissions trading system and strong action on climate change to something that is a reflection of the previous level ambition. The purpose of this note is to briefly explain what has happened in Australia about climate change policy, the implications that this has had for Australia meeting its Kyoto Protocol and 2020 targets, and some thoughts on the future of Australian climate politics and how this may impact Australia in the future. As Australian negotiators prepared to leave for Copenhagen in early December 2009, domestic Australian politics focused on the passage of an emissions trading bill. In a series of dramatic political maneuvers and negotiations, the Labor Government and the Liberal (Conservative) Opposition had reached agreement on draft legislation ending six months of highly contentious political debate. The level of disquiet within the Opposition to this compromise remained very high. Then, on the morning the bill was to be considered in Parliament, there was a leadership challenge within the Opposition party. In a stunning decision, a new leader, Tony Abbott, was elected by one vote on the basis of his opposition to the ETS. As a result of the change in leader, the Opposition’s policy shifted and its promised support for the ETS bill dissipated. The political consensus at the time—a consensus that remained in place even after the disap- pointment of Copenhagen—was that Kevin Rudd, the then Labor Prime Minister, would return from the Christmas break and call a so-called “double-dissolution election” to pass the ETS into law.

While such developments in the digital economy make it possible to provide, and find audiences for a channel such as NITV, there are also political, cultural and social reasons why NITV should continue to be funded on a sustainable basis and maintain an independent editorial voice and governance: Cultural – Indigenous Australians have over 40,000 years of cultural development as well as distinct and multiple perspectives on contemporary Australia.
