    Rt Hon Karen Bradley Secretary of State for Digital Culture Media and Sport July 14 2017 Dear Secretary of State Twenty-First Century Fox Inc and Sky plc; European Intervention Notice The Campaign for Press and Broadcasting is responding to your request for new submissions on the test of commitment to broadcasting standards. We are pleased to submit this short supplement to the submission we provided for Ofcom in March. As requested, the information is up-to-date, but we are adding an appeal to you to reconsider Ofcom’s recommendation to accept the 21CF bid on this ground, which we find wholly unconvincing in the light of the evidence we submitted. SKY NEWS IN AUSTRALIA In a pre-echo of the current buyout bid in the UK, Sky News Australia, previously jointly- owned with other media owners, became wholly owned by the Murdochs on December 1 last year. When the CPBF made its submission on the Commitment to Broadcasting Standards EIN to Ofcom in March there were three months of operation by which to judge the direction of the channel, but now there are three months more. A number of commentaries have been published. The Murdoch entity that controls Sky Australia is News Corporation rather than 21FC but the service is clearly following the Fox formula about which the CPBF commented to Ofcom. Indeed it is taking the model of broadcasting high-octane right-wing political commentary in peak viewing times even further. While Fox News has three continuous hours of talk shows on weekday evenings, Sky News Australia has five.

Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

We've all just seen that rather heart- wrenching press conference from the Goodchild family, and, Richard, you can't help but be moved by listening and hearing and seeing that particular press conference? RICHARD MARLES: Oh, that's absolutely right. It's - um, you cannot imagine being in their circumstances. And it is a tragedy which has really touched everyone and I think it is the idea that, at a place which is meant to provide enjoyment, you know, that whole family got on that ride to begin with, were expecting to have fun and, of course, it ends in that terrible way, and not to say anything about what, obviously, other family members saw. But, yeah, your heart absolutely breaks for - for that family today. CHRISTOPHER PYNE: Yes, no doubt. I mean a very Australian pastime to be at Dreamworld, enjoying a holiday – a family holiday. We've all done it, we all love to take it easy with our kids and our extended family, so I think the whole country has gone into a deep sense of mourning for that - those particular victims.

    CRONULLA SLSC 110TH ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 SEASON WORLD CHAMPION Chloe Mannix-Power World Life Saving Champion - Youth Female Beach Sprint JOHN & KERRYN SALMON OAM - CRONULLA SLSC A lifetime commitment to Surf Life Saving and Bushcare has resulted in the Order of Australia medal being bestowed on John Salmon. John joined Cronulla SLSC in 1949 at the age of 14 and quickly established himself as an outstanding surfboard paddler. In the early 1960s John transferred his interests to Wanda where he became involved with the administration of the club, serving time as President. At Wanda John and Kerryn were involved for the first nine years in the organisation and running of the Sutherland to Surf fun run and walk. After a short stay with Elouera John and Kerryn moved to Bateau Bay on the Central Coast. At Bateau Bay John and Kerryn co-founded the volunteer Bateau Bay Bushcare group and have played an active part in the creation and restoration of bushland. In recent years John has been part of the group who compiled our 100 year book - The Cronulla Story. John is a Life Member of both the Cronulla and Wanda Surf Life Saving Clubs.
