A Mem ber of the National Mutual Group of Companies Na,a,d Mun,d A Section Review by Ross Booth Collegians hold top spot after their 19 point win over North Old Boys at Harry Trott Oval a fortnight ago. It looked for a while like Collegians winning run was going to end as North led by 10 points at quarter time, Foster's Lager- but a 6 goal second quarter by the Lions put paid to that! 'an Roberts kicked three goals in the term to end with 6 for the day and now has 59 for the year . Collegians centreline of G reg T gear, Peter Kahn and Gary Irvine really got on top in this term as well . Lion central defenders Simon Williams [CHB]Band Stuart Hinchen A symbol of Australia [FB] were just too strong . Nort h's on-ball players Peter Wright, Mark Bowman and reGerarc! rown did reasonably well as did half forwards Mark Malone and Luke Morse, but sadly for North it was their 3rd loss in 4 games . for almost a century. BulleenTemplestowe "stole" a one point win over University Blues. It was very wet at Timber Ridge and the game did not reach a high standard . Blues held Bulleen goalless in the first quarter and kicked 5 themselves . They led by 20 points at three quarter time, but Bulleen, with Shane Farley dominating on the wing powered home with 6 goals in the last quarter. Earlier the Macaulay brothers, Simon and Nick together with the aging but brilliant Bernie Angel had set the Blues up for a win that would have taken them into the four. But the loss sees them slip to sixth . Since the Fosters brothers brewed the Ormond moved up to third place with a big 53 point win over Ivanhoe at the Boulevard. Ormond's key for- wards Scott Taylor [CHF] and Andy Hill [FF] were both amongst the goals with 5 each . Rovers Joe Young first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 and Andy Mehrten blitzed Ivanhoe in the early part of the game with Ormond holding almost a 12 goal break at the major interval . Rob Stewart and Phil Russell tried to lift the 'Hoes' in the second half from the half back the fame of Australia's favourite beer line but the leeway was far too great to make up. has grown around Australia and around De La Salle was in control all day against Marcellin and scored a comfortable 48 point win . they might have won by more but for bad kicking at goal . Tim Cooke in the centre was a powerhouse and Brian Wald ron and the world. Pat Maher in defence kept the Eagles out . The Getson brothers, Luke on the wing and Matt in the ruck were Foster's was first exported to South Marcellin's best . Africa during the Boer war Bottom side Caulfield Grammarians proved Peter F re nch correct when they got up by 3 points over Old . Today you Scotch. Curiously, their last win was against Scotch at Elsternwick 8 games ago. The Fields jumped Old Scotch in the first term and held a 5 goal lead at half time. But they lost two key players in that half - Warwick Watson can get a Foster's from Baghdad to from the forward line who had kicked 5 goals and ruckman Dick Fish, both with hamstring injuries. Scotch came back in the second half with Caulfield finishing the game with 16 fit men and two injured players propped Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . in the forward line. A gutsy win! It was Chris Stone's last game for the club - he is moving to Sydney in business and David Matthews, John Kanis and Phil Callil made sure his last memory of the club was a winning one! It's by far the biggest selling The win by Caulfield breathes more life into the relegation stakes. Australian beer in Britain. For a change of voice listen to Peter Fre nch tonight at 6.40 on 3LO! Wednesday 4 January, page 8: “WISDEN” AND THE L.-B.-W. RULE Cricketers have long learned to look to “Wisden” for something more than a mere dry return of the year’s work, and this winter they are treated to a very full discussion on one of cricket’s most debatable rules – the law as to leg before wicket. Not since the spirited controversy carried on in the columns of The Times on the following on “incident” in the University match at Lord’s in 1896 has there been such an authoritative discussion as is now presented to us in “Wisden.” It will be remembered that Mr E V Bligh proposed to amend the l-b-w rule to – “Or if, standing in the direct line between the two wickets, with any part of his person he stops the ball, which, in the opinion of the umpire at the bowler’s wicket would have hit the striker’s wicket – leg before wicket.” With considerable enterprise, the editor of “Wisden” sought the opinion of leading cricketers on the subject, and he has secured a wonderful harvest of interesting matter. Perhaps the abuse of the pads has called for some slight change in this particular law of the game, which might be so modified that an umpire should be able to place a wider construction on its lettering than he can do at present. Robert Thoms, the veteran Middlesex professional, lays it down that “The bat ought to play the ball that is about to hit the wicket, and in a spirit of fairness, if the bowler, by extra spin or break back, can beat the batsman, it seems but right that he should have the benefit of his skill .

  • The Cricketers of Hampstead Hockey Club the First 20 Years; 1894 to 1914
THE CRICKETERS OF Hampstead and HAMPSTEAD Westminster Hockey Club HOCKEY CLUB The Men of the Eyre Arms and the first 20 years 1894 to 1914 The Cricketers of Hampstead Hockey Club The first 20 years; 1894 to 1914 The Cricketers of Hampstead Hockey Club The first 20 years; 1894 to 1914 Written and Produced for Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club 2015 by Ian Smith The Cricketers of Hampstead Hockey Club The first 20 years; 1894 to 1914 Note This account is an attempt to throw light, predominantly from a cricketing perspective, on the circumstances in which Hampstead Hockey Club evolved and the key individuals who oversaw its transformation from a hockey-playing section of Hampstead Cricket Club into a leading hockey club in England within a little more than a decade. It is certainly not intended as a record of the first twenty years of the club, as that has been covered more skilfully by club historian, Colin Greenhalgh. More is known of some of these individuals than others. The contents may therefore appear out of balance. Much is taken up with the exploits of Andrew Stoddart but without apology, as his was a remarkable sporting record that has remained virtually unparalleled and was a life that, like several of his sporting contemporaries, ended in tragic circumstances. His story was itself recorded in part in his own albums of cuttings that were thought to be preparatory to a memoir. That never materialised but the contents were taken up by his biographer, David Frith, who felt compelled to write because “here was a wonderful cricketer who has been piteously neglected by historians”.
