Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name of the St. John Vianneys – St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc. Celebrating 50 years of Cricket St. John Vianneys - St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc. 50th Anniversary souvenir booklet 1961/62 to 2010/2011 1 Introduction St. John Vianney’s – St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc. (St. John’s – St. Bede’s C.C.) was established in 1994 after the amalgamation of two clubs (St John Vianney’s Cricket Club and St Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club). These clubs were established in their own right in 1974 and 1961 respectively. Up until 1994 both clubs were affiliated with the F.D.C.A. in the Turf, Matting and Junior competitions. Both clubs were in the first grade turf competition but seeking better future options, voted to move to VTCA in 1994-95. Both clubs considered an amalgamation as a means of forming a strong local club ensuring future existence and growth. Since the amalgamation the Club joined the VTCA in 1994-95 season with the first eleven commencing its involvement in the South B1 division and in the following years progressed to the highest division available within the VTCA (Senior). In 2003 the club was accepted into the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association where it is looking forward to a long association. Kingston Saints (which is the playing name of the St. John Vianney’s – St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club Inc.), play in two different Competitions, our Senior Turf teams play in Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) and our Junior teams play in the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association (C.M.C.A), and both are very well developed competitions and the C.M.C.A.

  • Around the Societies
The newsletter of the Council of Cricket Societies CCS Editorial address: [email protected] Autumn News 34a Chawn Hill, Stourbridge DY9 7JB 2016 The views expressed in this newsletter are not necessarily those of the Council or any individual cricket society Backspin Magazine The fate of Backspin is still to be determined, though it looks very much as if issue 12 will be the last. This is a great pity as previous issues were chock full, cover to cover, with items of cricket interest of yesteryear, which, ironically, may be one of the reasons for its demise. I offer the following observations. The retro title was launched in 2013 as the sister publication to Backpass, which was founded in 2007. Both titles were published by a small group of enthusiasts, which has now dwindled to just the founder. Backspin is probably unique in that it carries absolutely no advertising, which is crucial for survival. The editor told me that he has to pay a crippling £10k just to put the title on the shelves of WH Smith. Probably one of the biggest causes of failure was that the obvious target market of older cricket followers is largely unaware of the magazine’s existence. I would have thought a mailshot plus a complimentary copy should have been sent to all cricket societies – perhaps it was. Did any society ever receive any mailshots? To quote John Simons, the editor of The Cricket Society News Bulletin, “Backspin packs far more interest in a single issue than in a year’s worth of the competition.” The potentially farewell issue #12 was planned to appear in June (originally May), and actually arrived in July! If you go to Smith’s you’ll have to hunt for it in the larger branches.

  • Women's Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes
Women’s Cricket, Pioneers and Unsung Heroes The important contribution made to women’s cricket by former students of Dartford College of Physical Education © The Ӧsterberg Collection Jane Claydon 2021 Unsung Heroes A great deal of publicity has been given to women’s cricket in the last decade and yet, some modern authors, in their histories of the game, have not included the names of many talented international cricketers with links to Dartford. Perhaps this is because the authors were not taught by members of staff trained at a Specialist College of Physical Education and are unaware of the heritage of Dartford, Bedford, Chelsea, Dunfermline and other later foundations. As a result, they have missed out on a rich history of women cricketers and administrators. I am sure Mary Duggan would be surprised to find that her lengthy and significant career is not highlighted in one recent publication. I have attempted to redress the balance and introduce the reader to many other players who trained at Dartford College. They may not be household names, but during their careers they influenced the development of the game for women and the outcome of many significant matches. Information about the history of women’s cricket is easy to find. Several books of interest have been published in the last half century. Perhaps, Nancy Joy’s Maiden Over, published in 1950, is overlooked by younger researchers, but it is a source of interesting details about the 1948/49 tour to Australia and New Zealand in which the author participated. The Cricket Archive can provide details of the performance of all England women cricketers, the WCA year books are available to view online and many of the players feature on the pages of Wikipedia.

  • Monday 18 July, Page 13: GENTLEMEN V PLAYERS
Wednesday 4 January, page 8: “WISDEN” AND THE L.-B.-W. RULE Cricketers have long learned to look to “Wisden” for something more than a mere dry return of the year’s work, and this winter they are treated to a very full discussion on one of cricket’s most debatable rules – the law as to leg before wicket. Not since the spirited controversy carried on in the columns of The Times on the following on “incident” in the University match at Lord’s in 1896 has there been such an authoritative discussion as is now presented to us in “Wisden.” It will be remembered that Mr E V Bligh proposed to amend the l-b-w rule to – “Or if, standing in the direct line between the two wickets, with any part of his person he stops the ball, which, in the opinion of the umpire at the bowler’s wicket would have hit the striker’s wicket – leg before wicket.” With considerable enterprise, the editor of “Wisden” sought the opinion of leading cricketers on the subject, and he has secured a wonderful harvest of interesting matter. Perhaps the abuse of the pads has called for some slight change in this particular law of the game, which might be so modified that an umpire should be able to place a wider construction on its lettering than he can do at present. Robert Thoms, the veteran Middlesex professional, lays it down that “The bat ought to play the ball that is about to hit the wicket, and in a spirit of fairness, if the bowler, by extra spin or break back, can beat the batsman, it seems but right that he should have the benefit of his skill .
