HALL OF FAME Three long term members were inducted into the Hall of Fame this season ‐ Craig Reece (scorer), Brian Hunt (Former player, Curator and Cleaning) and Greg McLeod (Former Player and Current Committee Member).

Craig Reece (Inducted 8 April 2017) Craig arrived at the club in 1975 when his cousin, who was involved with the Hawks at the time, suggested to club officials that he could work as the scoreboard operator for a few dollars a match. Then, one day, the senior scorer was away and someone said what about that kid who does the scoreboard? He can do it and he has done it ever since. Reece has always been happy to help out. He has also been a member of ’s panel of Interstate and International scorers since 1980 and has many years’ experience doing the Boxing Day test. He has scored first‐class cricket in Britain. He has written and published a number of limited edition cricket books including ‘140 years in the east ‐ The history of the Hawks. Reece was made Life Member in 1995.

Reece said he enjoyed his role and that the club had never done anything wrong by him, so he was happy to help out. And, such is his devotion to the club, he travels more than two hours each weekend, from his home in Euroa, to score for the Hawks.

Reece named Hawks greats Graham Matthews and Peter Roach as the best players had seen at the club. Peter was a great wicketkeeper and batsman and Graham was a fantastic opening batsman on uncovered wickets, its a different era.

Brian Hunt (Inducted 8 April 2017) Brian has worked tirelessly for the club since he joined at the inception of St John Vianney’s Cricket Club in 1975. He won the Best Clubman award for the first four years of the club and again in 1989. It was decided that the Best Clubman award should be named in Brian’s honour so to allow other people to win it.

Over the years Brian has been barman (sometimes leaving the ground early to ensure cold beer was available for the players), Curator (Walter Galt and St. Bedes), cleaner of the clubrooms and general handyman. He also maintained the practice area throughout the season as well as the off season. You will often see Brian at the club with his head in the rubbish bin collecting the cans. The clubs trophies for the first ten years were donated by R. L. Roberts. Brian would collect the empty bottles take them to R L Roberts the Bottle O and purchase the trophies with the money. Brian received Life Membership in 1985.

As an opening batsman and wicketkeeper Brian played over 250 games for the club including two premierships. He captained the lower grade teams during his time winning the average on a number of occasions. His teams were affectionately known as Hunty’s Heroes. Brian will be a deserving member of the Hawk’s Hall of Fame.

Greg McLeod (Inducted 8 April 2017) Greg was a foundation member and committee member of the St. John Vianney’s Cricket Club in 1975 and opened the batting in the club’s first game. He served on the committee as President (5 years), Vice President (3 years), Secretary (7), Treasurer (9) as well as general committee, social committee, and match committee. He won the Best Clubman award on seven occasions. He received Life Membership in 1985.

As an opening batsman, wicketkeeper and later first slip, Greg played 246 games for the club (108 first XI games) including three premierships from 17 finals games. Greg captained the firsts, seconds and thirds during his time winning batting averages in all three grades.

One of his innovations was he started the Milo program at the club for 5‐12 year olds in 2000 and this program is successfully continuing now and has become one of the club’s main revenue streams. He was Delegate to Federal District Cricket Association for many years as well as substitute delegate with VTCA and VSDCA. While delegate at the FDCA he was elected to the executive and held positions as President, Secretary and Treasurer and was granted life membership of the Association in 2004.

Page 6 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

Along with Phil O’Meara, he was a foundation member of the Walter Galt Committee of Management in 2001 and has continued as Treasurer since its inception.

IN MEMORIUM

VIC WOOLF: B: 30.12.1919 D: 23.04.2017 When Vic Woolf passed away in his ninety‐eighth year in April 2017 he was thought to be the Clubs last link to any pre Second World War First XI cricketers. Vic was a top order batsman and regular wicket‐keeper who enjoyed a most distinguished cricket career at Hawthorn‐East Melbourne. He was a First XI player for seventeen seasons, a member of three First XI premierships, won the First XI batting award, the Harry Boyle Trophy and was elected a Honorary Life Member of H‐EM. That he played 175 First XI matches was testament to his durability and ability. His career, like thousands of others, was interrupted by military service from 1940 to 1945 and in the process, he lost his best youthful years to war. Had war not intervened, he would easily have played more than 200 First XI matches and may have played at a higher level. Many judges from his era considered him worthy of representing Victoria. Vic Woolf grew up around the Camberwell area where his family lived. Whilst still a schoolboy he scored a in school competition cricket. From school he played at Riversdale Cricket Club before progressing to his senior District club, Hawthorn‐East Melbourne. As was common of the era, promising young players from District clubs were selected for the VCA Colts. Vic made his First XI District debut for the Colts in October 1938 at Carlton, where he made 6 in a losing cause. On Cup Day, the Colts played at Northcote. Vic failed to score but was witness to a hat‐trick by Bill Newton, who took 6 for 25. Newton was later beheaded by his Japanese captors in New Guinea in 1943 when a P.O.W. Among other team‐mates at the Colts whom Vic played alongside included Sam Loxton, Norm Blundell and Colin Bremner all first‐class cricketers. One of the ironies of Vic’s career was his eventual debut for the Hawthorn‐East Melbourne First XI, which as it transpired, was against the VCA Colts. The match was played at Glenferrie in December 1939. It remains a low point of the Clubs history. Sent in to bat on a wet Glenferrie wicket, Hawthorn‐EM was bowled out in less than fourteen overs for only 16. Vic Woolf was one of seven batsmen who failed to score. Decades later, when asked about this match, Vic could only chuckle and say “Oh that!” However, from this low point, a fine and successful career would emerge. Before his career blossomed, he would lose six years to military service where, during the years 1940 to 1945, he played about only 20 matches for the First XI from a possible 92 matches. Despite the demands of military service, in 1942 he married his sweetheart and the love of his life, Muriel. They had met the year before. Theirs would be a long and his happiest. When Muriel passed away in August 2016, they had been together for 74 years and Vic had tenderly cared for Muriel during her later years of blindness. After the gloom of the war years, Vic returned to regular cricket with Hawthorn‐East Melbourne and it was now that the brilliance and consistency of his batting was able to flourish with the consequence that many bowlers suffered. Over the course of the next decade he scored over 3,500 runs and was a member of three Hawthorn‐East Melbourne First XI premiership teams. The first Final that he played in, although successful for the Club, was personally a disappointment. Played on the M.C.G. in April 1950, he failed to score against Melbourne. His came the week after what was arguably his best innings for the Club. In the semi‐final, against Carlton in March 1950, he scored just 19 , the second top score of the H‐EM innings. Amid damp conditions and with some good Carlton bowlers to contend with, Vic batted with great skill and bravely. He went to wicket with H‐EM 59 for seven. Along with Col Duncan and Herb Hay, he saw the side through the danger and safely to a draw. This enabled H‐EM, the top team, to qualify for the Final which they went on to win against Melbourne. Twelve months later in the Final of April 1951 against Fitzroy, also played on the M.C.G., he improved to contribute 39 to an overall innings of 372 assisting the Club to victory by 194 runs. However, Vic seemed to have saved his best for the last. In the Final at the Albert Ground in April 1956, against South Melbourne, he scored 73 helping Hawthorn‐EM to 340 runs. Demoralized, South collapsed to the bowling of Salmon, Dick and Kerr and was bowled out for 94 and 172 to lose by an innings. After the success against South Melbourne, Vic promptly retired from the District First XI. His retirement to local club cricket with Mont Albert also allowed for other pursuits and he became a good player of tennis, golf and lawn bowls at which he continued until his ninetieth year. A post cricket problem which he contended with for the remainder of his long life, was arthritis in his hands, a direct from broken fingers suffered from his many years of wicket‐keeping and batting. He didn’t keep wickets through the whole of his career, standing aside after the arrival of Les Botham at the Club in 1952. Botham was a highly skilled ‘keeper, who later represented Victoria over a number of seasons. When Les was away with Victoria, Vic generally kept wicket for H‐EM in his place.

Page 9 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

For many years Vic worked for the old P.M.G. in and around Kew. Under the old CSS superannuation scheme, Vic elected to take early retirement in 1974. Consequently, he enjoyed 43 years of retirement, much of this spent with Muriel and his children Lesley and Jeffrey. Vic adopted skills learned from his working career and became a good handy‐man around the home, who was able to help with home improvements. In his younger years, Vic played football with Camberwell Football Club. His press cuttings book from his cricket career provided ample and easy opportunities to reflect, happily, of a good career. If not for the war, his scrap book may have included Victorian representation. During the Second World War, Vic’s younger brother by two years, Len, played at least five First XI matches for H‐EM. Len Woolf was, like his brother, a talented sportsman. Apart from also serving his nation during the Second World War in New Guinea, Len later played 16 matches for , after the Second World War. He died in Brisbane in 2014, aged 93 years. Vic Woolf’s First XI District Cricket career statistics are:

Years Mat Inns No HS Runs Avg 100 50 ct stp VCA Colts 1938‐40 22 26 4 88 442 20.09 0 3 13 0 Hawthorn‐East Melbourne 1938‐56 153 187 29 116* 4352 27.41 1 23 110 95 Total 175 213 33 116* 4794 26.63 1 26 123 95

His century was scored at Essendon in March 1955. Not noted for his bowling, he nonetheless, claimed two wickets during his career. Statistically, he is able to claim a high proportion of his wicket‐keeping dismissals from stumpings, having formed a strong partnership with the excellent spin bowlers at Hawthorn‐East Melbourne during his career, which included, Ted Healy, Geoff Cormack, Allan Dick and Col Duncan. THOMAS ARTHUR WATKIN: B: 28.01.1932 D: 11.09.2016 For a number of years in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, Tom Watkin was the friendly and knowledgeable committeeman and publicity officer for Hawthorn‐East Melbourne CC.

During his time with Hawthorn‐East Melbourne, Tom would be present each match day at Glenferrie Oval and record the details of the First XI and report, not only on their performances, but also on the doings of the other elevens. His reports were featured in the Progress Press and became an important contribution to keeping the Clubs name prominent in the local community.

Tom was married to Patricia and together they were proud parents to eight children. Importantly, for Hawthorn‐East Melbourne, Tom enjoyed cricket and the club would benefit with three of his sons adopting cricket and playing for much of their careers at the club. Over two decades the three sons, Arthur, John and Paul would represent the H‐EM First XI with distinction. Arthur, as a left‐arm spin bowler for H‐EM and the Victorian Second XI, Paul a right‐arm fast bowler and John, a right‐hand opening batsman. In 1986‐87 a proud father, Tom, was able to watch all three sons play together in the First XI in numerous matches. It was a rare moment in District cricket, that all three brothers would play First XI cricket together. All three sons appear on the Clubs Honour Board.

CYRIL ANTHONY MOLYNEUX: B: D: 26.10.2016 Cyril Molyneux first joined Hawthorn‐East Melbourne in 1936 when he was 18 years of age. He was issued members badge No. 276. In the season that he joined the Club, it is thought that he played some lower eleven cricket at H‐EM. However, it is difficult to determine, exactly, the number of runs he scored during his time with the Club due to the H‐EM Annual Reports which in the years of the 1930’s only provided limited statistical detail concerning the averages of the lower eleven players.

After World War Two, and into the 1960’s he enjoyed a successful career at Officer Cricket Club. Cyril passed away on 26 October 2016, aged 98.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Petar Ivetic ‐ President Our first year as a Club was very successful and we set the challenge to the Committee and coaching staff to improve on the foundations we established in year 1 of the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club.

I am proud to announce we have built on our first year and also made some significant improvements to our Club.

Our achievements include: 1. Operating profit of $39,319.03 2. Installation of new synthetic and turf proactive wickets and increased our centre wicket table from 6 to 8 wickets 3. Head coach Mr. James Miller signing a 2 year extension to contract 4. Held our inaugural Hall of Fame evening and inducted 3 amazing people, Mr. Brian Hunt, Mr. Greg McLeod and Mr. Craig Reece. These gentlemen have a combined 130 years of service to our great club 5. Cricket School and Academy has increased numbers from 33 to 50 6. Continued to work with the local community, hosting the opening of Love The Game, with the Minister of Gaming in attendance and officially opening the Love The Game campaign 7. Hosted the Victorian Indigenous Cricket team in playing 2 T20 matches prior to the team heading to Alice Springs for the National Championships and 2 T20 matches against the Southern Bayside u21s 8. Head curator who rolled the Junction Oval wickets is again on board in the 2017‐18 season

FINANCIALS I am very pleased to announce we recorded an operating profit this season and one that surpassed our expectations. Full financials are detail in our Treasurer’s report.

The positive outputs has seen the following accomplishments:  Installation of new turf practice wickets  Increased the centre wicket table from 6 to 8 wickets

However, we still have outstanding projects: o Build a shed close to the practice wickets (~ $15,000) o New electronic scoreboard (~ $80,000)

Our goal this season is to build the shed, one which will store all our cricket equipment

I would like to thank our wonderful key sponsors and those who have made considerable donations to our Club: o Telstra Business Centre (TBC) Bayside o National Infrastructure Solutions o Parkdale and Mentone Community Bank o BLK Sports o The Club also introduced a major sponsorship drive which raised over $10,000.

The good news is that work has already commenced on securing our key sponsors for next season and I am very confident that we will lock in: o National Infrastructure Solutions o Parkdale and Mentone Community Bendigo Bank o BLK Sports

We will again run the major sponsorship drive this coming season. The Club has also secured a Council grant to assist with curation costs and will receive $10,000 for the next 2 years and in 2017/18 Cricket Victoria will increase its dividends to each Club by ~ $10,000 to $15,000. A special thanks to Mr. Danny Stevenson for all his hard work on managing the financials. Documentation is prepared and sent prior to Committee meetings. Page 11 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

COACHING I am delighted to announce our head coach Mr. James Miller has signed a 2 year extension to his contract, which has still 1 year remaining. James will be head coach of the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club until the end 2019/20 season. This will ensure stability with our on‐field team.

This season has been difficult with no real coaching support staff in place, coupled by our star player and former captain, Mr. Ryan Ninan still being overseas and not able to enter due to visa issues.

James has promptly addressed the assistant coaching issue and has already put in place a very strong coaching team for the 2017/18 season. Mr. Brad Rossborough, Mr. David Nankervis, Mr. David Scott are just a few names locked in. We also have secured T20 Specialist Consultant, Mr. Darren Berry for 4 sessions as well as Mrs. Sue Lawrence, a Sports Psychology & Player Welfare. We certainly look forward to all grades making an improvement this coming season.

James continues to impress as a head coach with his professionalism, dedication, energy and time management whilst working through his level 3 coaching course, which is due to be completed this year.

Congratulations to James on another year of coaching. This year has thrown up a number of challenges, however, with lessons learnt we will continue to improve and grow as a Club.

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIPS Our relationship with Cricket Victoria (CV) continues to remain very strong with positive feedback from the CV Bboard and Chairman, Mr. Russell Thomas. We also continue to work closely with the Kingston Councillors. Cr Tamsin Beardsley, Cr Geoff Gledhill and Cr Ron Brownlees and have managed to secure a number of grants during the season.

Our local community continues to be very much involved attending matches and the feedback from opposition clubs and umpires is positive on the number of supporters and volunteers we have attend. Players and umpires stay back post match to socialise and enjoy the best hamburgers in premier cricket.

The umpiring union (100+) had a function in our social room and have requested the use of Walter Galt reserve again for this September. There is no question our Club has made a massive difference to the Kingston Community and we are also very fortunate to have the full support of Cricket Victoria and the Kingston Council.

HAWKS CRICKET ACADEMY & CRICKET SCHOOL The 2017 Hawks Cricket Academy (HCA) and Cricket School (HCS) kicked off in March with an information evening at Walter Galt. The Club refined the program and reduced the number of weeks from 14 to 10. The winter program will again be run by our senior coach Mr. James Miller, with support from new assistant coaches, senior players and committee members.

We have 53 players aged between 10 and 17 in the program, which is split in two.

Cricket School Cricket Academy 10 to 13 year olds 14 to 17 year olds 120 minute sessions 120 minute sessions

The program commenced on Friday, 5th May and will conclude on Friday, 4th August. We have been fortunate to secure 9 of the 10 sessions at the MCG. Last season the club had 7 players from the academy play premier senior cricket. This professionally run winter program is a great pathway for juniors to play premier cricket. Our vision last year was to exceed over 50 junior players, which we achieved and next year to exceed 60 players and have a player from the academy play first X1 cricket in 2018/19 season.

I would like to acknowledge and thank each of the volunteers for their hard work in running the winter program. These roles are all voluntary and it takes a special effort to commit in attending these sessions and running a professional program, and the feedback from the parents has been very positive.

APPRECIATION I would like to thank the Committee for another season of hard work and commitment. One of the key challenges for Cricket nationally is attracting volunteers. When you go around to see other clubs, you instantly notice the reduced number of

Page 12 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

volunteers. People are simply not willing to give up their time. We are very fortunate with our volunteer numbers and the support during training and game days.

Committee: o Brett Sebire: Vice President o Danny Stevenson: Treasurer o John Noonan: Administration Manager o Phil O’Meara: Director of Cricket and Chairman of Selectors o Gaurav Kapoor General Committee o Peter Knuppel General Committee o Greg McLeod General Committee o Shane McQuinn General Committee o David Scott General Committee

Shane McQuinn resigned in November 2016 due to a hectic schedule and I would like to thank Shane for his services during the 4 seasons on the Committee.

The committee again deserve significant recognition on the countless hours spent at meetings (Committee / Council / Cricket Victoria meetings / sponsorship), with e‐mails and phone calls and I look forward to working with the committee in my final year as President.

I would also to recognise the following for the tireless effort, support and dedication to the Club. o Mr. Craig Reece for in the 1st X1 o Mr. James Maloney for scoring in our 2nd X1. o Ms. Annette Cann for operational management of the scoreboard at Walter Galt reserve o Mr. Frank Miller as our net captain and 1st X1 team manager o Mr. John Hand as our 2nd X1 team manager and off‐field support during the season o Mr. Brian Hunt for his amazing work around the club on ensuring our grounds are prepared on game day o Mrs. Anne O’Meara for canteen support with lunches and with special events o Mrs. Robyn McLeod for canteen support with lunches and with special events o Mrs. Bonnie Sebire for the amazing effort in preparing the social room for our Hall of Fame dinner o Mr. Mark Davies as our graphical designer and developing all the Clubs flyers o Mr. Andrew Greenwood for managing the bar and stock o Mr. Mark Ruddy for assisting with Thursday evening dinners and cooking the BBQ on Fridays and Saturday afternoons o Mr. Darren Sheehan for stacking the bar and support on match days

Our Club continues to grow and one that is making a difference in the Kingston Community in growing cricket. We continue to drive growth and development through our Milo and In2 Cricket programs, junior cricket, our cricket school and cricket academy, and our 6 senior teams. We are very well structured and work tirelessly to ensure the Club provides an opportunity for both male and female cricketers.

I acknowledge and accept there is still a lot of work needed in securing a permanent second oval, storage shed and electric scoreboard. However, we can reflect on the year gone by on what has been accomplished. For example, we now have amazing practice wickets versus not training on turf wickets for the last 18 month. We’ve expanded our centre wicket table on our main ground, and have one of the best honour boards in premier cricket.

On a personal level, I have put forward a transition proposal to the Committee that will see the 2017/18 cricket season as my final year as President and my planned successor and Vice President, Mr. Brett Sebire transition into the President’s role, subject to ratification by the members at the AGM.

Page 13 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

The proposal was endorsed by the Committee and one which will ensure a smooth and professional transition, ensuring Mr. Sebire and the Committee are set up for success. It will also allow me to go out the way I would like to and to say goodbye to all that have supported me. Mr. Sebire has the right attributes (values, principles and work ethic) to be our next President and has the full support of the Committee and myself.

Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club has already made a significant difference in the community and our brand and profile continues to grow, and I could not be prouder of what has been achieved in such a short period of time. I look forward to another, albeit my final year, with excitement and understanding of knowing we have stability both on and off the ground….our future is in good hands.

Go Hawks!

AUDIT REPORT

AUDITORS REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE KINGSTON HAWTHORN CRICKET CLUB

Qualified Opinion

The purpose of the audit is to express an opinion on the financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club, which comprises the Balance Sheet as at 31 May 2017, the Profit & Loss Statement, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the responsible entities declaration.

In our opinion, except for the effect of the matters described in the “Basis of Qualified Opinion” section of our report, the accompanying financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club gives a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at 31 May 2017 and of its financial performance for the year then ended.

Basis for Qualified Opinion

1. Cash takings in the form of player subscriptions, bar sales and canteen sales are a significant source of revenue for Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club. The control mechanisms surrounding the receipt, collection and recording of cash prior to entry into its financial records are insufficient. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding this revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to cash receipts and payments had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We, therefore are unable to express an opinion on whether the recorded cash income and expenses are complete.

2. All assets in the Balance Sheet are represented at the purchase prices rather their current written down or market values. Additionally, Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club does not have a current record of the specific machines, memorabilia, furniture and other assets that are in the club’s possession. Such assets have not been valued nor have they been sighted to confirm their continued existence.

3. The Club has been calculated and reported the GST on a system that is separate to the software used by the Club to record their transactions and generate the financial report. As a result, the transactions and balances contained in the financial report are GST inclusive. Therefore, Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet are misrepresented to the extent of GST that relates to the underlying transactions.

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the registered entity in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Other Information

The Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the information included in the registered entity’s annual report for the year ended 31 May 2017, but does not include our auditor’s report.

Our opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon.

The scope of the audit does not extend to the other information and, thus, does not consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial report or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. We have nothing to report and express no opinion in this regard.

Responsibilities of Responsible Entities for the Financial Report

The responsible entities of the entity are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and for such internal control as the responsible entities determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, entities are responsible for assessing the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the responsible entities either intends to liquidate the registered entity or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.

The responsible entities are responsible for overseeing the entity’s financial reporting process.

Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of the financial report.

As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also:

‐ Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. ‐ Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the registered entity’s internal control. ‐ Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by responsible entities. ‐ Conclude on the appropriateness of the responsible entity’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the registered entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the registered entity to cease to continue as a going concern. ‐ Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the entity regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

COACH’S REPORT

James Miller – Coach Another season bites the dust,

Congratulations to all hall of fame & life member inductees, a wonderful reminder of the great things that have been achieved at these clubs we now proudly call Kingston Hawthorn

However given we are two years old in this present state it is impossible not to compare those two seasons and continue to look forward.

First, start with my thank you’s: To the amazing volunteers who make the place run. Pres, Phil, Greg, Danny, JR & the board – Brett, Hunty, John Hand as a last minute call up for the 2's but did so much more thoroughly deserving of best clubman & of course Franky (net captain & team manager)

To my support network ‐ Lynda & the kids, Thank you for your unwavering support & unconditional love. I am truly lucky to go home to smiling faces regardless of results across the board.

Thanks to the Skippers for all your assistance, both on field match days but also foresight into selection and keeping communication lines open: ‐

Greggy, Bobby, Bayls & JK in the 2’s Mick O & Lyle in the 3’s Jono Boyd & Cocksy in the 4’s Riley – outstanding as a multiple winner premiership captain in what can be challenging circumstances JR and his skills in chasing up players for the 6’s and Masters.

Season in a snapshot: Positives:

20+ players Debuting for club or/and making First XI debut:  Slats / Yoz / Rambo / Chops / Rahat / Willy Agar / Tyrone Kane / Norfy / Dyl RJ  Return for Rami Dhindsa & Yasi playing a full 1st XI season after an 8 season apprenticeship, Yasi did not just play ‐ but contributed with bat/ball & field in all formats resulting in match winning performances for his team.  Javed Khan returning to the field following a family tragedy in pre‐season

Club wins:  Successful T20 campaign in 1's and wins against strong finals teams (St Kilda & Monash tigers, Northcote & Footscray  Good positive/ aggressive cricket in rain effected 2 day games which didn't get us points, but paved the way for our T20 success.  Bowled Glenn Maxwell into form ‐ doing our bit for Australian cricket.  2nd XI strong finish inc wins over Fitz Donc, Melbourne (comfortable & confident chase of 350) and Prahran  Nurturing talent with Jono in 4's vital cog in securing future success  Multiple flags for Riley’s invincible’s in the 5ths!  Chops community rookie for Melbourne Stars

Cricket Academy having 7 players play senior cricket this season (Mitch, Noah, Emran, Matty B, Seany H, Pablo, Brian Fonseca)

Homegrown community players ‐ I look forward to first XI debuts & hopefully more to come

Learnings:

Farewell and thank you to TC & Lachie from first XI: Our two most experienced players apart from the skipper, they will be missed, in their absence there will be opportunities for those willing to take them.

Page 20 | 46 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2016‐2017

Steve Cannon leaves after many years of service, he did get a mention at the Ryder for “100 very ordinary games in the 3rd XI” … I feel this is Unfair, my cricket had 59 3rd XI games from 09/10 ‐ not all of them ordinary

So the question remains, as we finished first season, were we “successful”?

If anything season 16/17 is a strong reminder of how tough Premier cricket is & how much work we have to do.

We have the honour to play week in / week out in what I believe to be the highest standard club competition in world cricket.

We need to take that challenge on ‐ using the cornerstones of success I will continue to instil to grow this club, and the individuals within as players & people.

Communication Respect Hard work Continuous improvement Family/work/school balance Enjoyment of a great game.

I hope everyone enjoyed some well‐deserved down time – the wheels are already turning for 2017/18, exciting times ahead for KHCC.

JUNIOR REPORT:

Kingston‐Hawthorn Junior club are in a rebuilding phase with two under 12 teams currently playing in the SECA, a T20Blast! Team and 60+ Milo In2Cricket participants. As these kids continue their cricket journey, we will see more teams in more age groups. With the support of the Committee, the pathway in place at Kingston‐ Hawthorn should see the club placed as the go to club for juniors over the coming years.

Thank you to the committee for the ongoing support and to Steve McMahon Junior Coordinator.

Under 12B The U12B’s consisted mostly of children in their second year of competitive cricket. Most of the boys played 1 day games last season so coming to 2 day games with concentration required for 40 overs at a time sometimes proved a challenge. The improvement over the course of the season in this aspect was dramatic evidenced by a much improved 2nd half of the season.

The team won 9 games and only lost two during the home and away season making the finals in 4th place. They were beaten in the semi‐final by the top side (Carnegie) but the team showed they have the talent to continue with their finals appearances

Congratulations to Corey Cater and Luke Sullivan for being presented as joint Junior Club Champions, the first time the club has two winners in one year.

Many thanks to all the helpers in this grade especially coach Chris Sullivan.

Under 12D U/12d's consisted of mainly 1st year players, with only 3 boys having played hard ball cricket previously. The boys all improved each week, we started off with way too many wides in the early games but with each training session and game the boys all started to click and by the end of the year we had every boy bowling consistently. Many thanks to all the helpers in this grade especially coach Dallas Jones

T20Blast We had one team in T20Blast! Playing games on a Saturday morning at Mordialloc. The boys had a great time and got a taste of competitive cricket which will hopefully lead on to them playing hard ball cricket in the following seasons.

Thanks to all the parents who assisted with setting up and supporting the boys. Many thanks to Paul Brown who coordinated the 13 participants each week.

In2Cricket We had over 60 participants register (Boys and Girls) in the program. As was our tradition, we ran the program on Friday nights and this year we had an extended period of 12 sessions.

Programs were designed to have fun & rotate exercises, whilst incorporating the learning skills of the game. My thanks to the Players, Fathers & Mothers who assisted me in running the programs.

Special thanks to John R Noonan and Phil O’Meara who coordinated the on‐ field activities each week and Greg McLeod, Brett Sebire & Mark Ruddy for their regular appearances in running the BBQ & to Andrew Greenwood for his support behind the bar.

Overall our numbers remain strong. Friday nights have been successful with great role up from the Parents. Trust all the boys and girls enjoyed the sessions.
