E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The formerly Afrotropical genus Shamshevia Grichanov, 2012, is recorded from the Oriental Region for the first time. Description of a new species Shamshevia reshchikovi sp. nov. from India is provided. A modified diagnosis of the genus is compiled. Key words: Oriental Region, India, Diptera, Dolichopodidae, Shamshevia, new species Introduction The genus Shamshevia Grichanov, 2012 was described from Namibia to accommodate a single species, S. hoanibensis Grichanov. Despite flattened posterior mesonotum, the genus was placed in the subfamily Diaphori- nae, sharing most of the hypopygial structures with Aphasmaphleps Grichanov, Asyndetus Loew, Chrysotus Meigen, Cryptophleps Lichtwardt and Diaphorus Meigen (Grichanov 2012a, b). In the Old World Diaphorinae, only the Oriental Terpsimyia Dyte has a flattened posterior mesonotum, but otherwise strongly differs from Sham- shevia in the morphology of the face, antenna and wing, the absence of propleural bristles, and in the ornamenta- tion of male legs and abdomen (see Grootaert & Meuffels 1999). The last keys to the Oriental, Afrotropical and Palearctic genera of Diaphorinae were provided by Yang et al. (2011), Grichanov (2011) and Grichanov et al. (2011). Bickel (2009) compiled a key to New World dolichopodid (including diaphorine) genera. An Australasian endemic Phasmaphleps Bickel was included in the keys by Bickel (2005) and Grichanov (2011). -

Thinophilus sinclairi sp. nov. is described from the coast of the Sea of Azov, Ukraine, and from northern Kazakhstan. The new species is similar to T. spinitarsis Becker but differs from it in the structure of the hypopygium, apex of fore tibia without long black dorsal seta, and seg- ments 2–4 of fore tarsi with long posterodorsal black setae. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

B iCkel 2 The Australian Museum, 6–8 College Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia; email: [email protected] The genus Paraliancalus was originally proposed by Parent (1938) for the single endemic Hawaiian species Liancalus metallicus Grimshaw, 1901, a widespread species found on most of the main Hawaiian islands. it is one of the largest Hawaiian dolichopodids, being some 8 mm in length. Possibly due to this large size and assuming the genus contained only one species, dolichopodid workers have not paid close attention to specific morphological characters of the specimens, assuming all belonged to the type species, P. metallicus . Recently, examination of a few male specimens in the Bishop Museum by one of us (DJB), showed that the genus is actually represented in Hawaii by two morpho-species, both of which are similar in appearance but differ in leg and genitalic characters. After borrowing specimens from the University of Hawai‘i insect Museum and examining all material in the Bishop Museum, we conclude that there are indeed two species of Paraliancalus in Hawai‘i. We herein describe and illustrate the second species as Para - liancalus laciniafemur , n. sp ., which is thus far known only from the island of Maui. -

Introduction The family Dolichopodidae, commonly known as Long legged flies, are one of the most diverse families of Diptera (Grichanov,1999). Adult dolichopodids vary in size from about 1-9 mm in length and can be recognized by their elongate legs, reduced wing venation, aristate antennae, and relatively slender build. Most species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze, while some others are non-metallic yellowish (e.g., some species of Achalcus Loew, Argyrochlamys Lamb, Neurigona Rondani, Xanthochlorus Loew and Xanthina Aldrich), or brown to blackish (e.g., several species of Micromorphus Mik and Medetera Fischer von Waldheim). Dolichopodids are widespread and are found in all zoogeographic regions (Robinson,1970; Dyte, 1975; Dyte and Smith ,1980; Bickel and Dyte, 1989; Negrobov, 1991; Pollet et al., 2004). In general, adults and larvae prefer moist environments including stream and lake margins, humid forests, saltmarshes, seashores, and freshwater seepages, where they often occur in large numbers. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Thambemyia Oldroyd is a marine shore dolichopodid genus in the aphrosyline subgroup of the subfamily Hydrophorinae. The genus was erected by Oldroyd (1956) based on the greatly elongated proboscis of the Malaysian species T. pagdeni Oldroyd. Since the early 1980’s the generic limits of Thambemyia have been in flux as a result of differing opinions regarding the proposed synonymy of the related genus Conchopus Takagi, 1965 by Meuffels & Grootaert (1984). Masunaga et al. (2005) argued to retain the generic status of Conchopus in a much restricted sense (i.e., the rectus species group of Takagi), but did not provide evidence to support that classification, however later Masunaga in Zhu et al. (2005) appears to have reversed this decision. Recent catalogs have all treated Conchopus as a junior synonym of Thambemyia (Bickel & Dyte 1989; Pollet et al. 2004; Yang et al. 2006). Presently Thambemyia (sensu Meuffels & Grootaert 1984) includes 24 described species from Japan, China and the Hawaiian Islands (Yang et al. 2006). Masunaga & Saigusa (2006) reported an additional five undescribed species (as Conchopus) from the Hawaiian Islands.
