DIRECTOR OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION EXETER, NEW HAMPSHIRE Phillips Exeter Academy, an independent, coeducational, residential secondary school, seeks a strategic, visionary, and tactical leader to serve as Director of Equity and Inclusion (hereafter referred to as Director or DEI). The successful candidate will be a collaborative convener and boundary-spanning agent of change with a strong commitment to the core community values and demonstrated experience as a skilled administrator and diversity advocate. Reporting to the Principal (the Chief Executive Officer), the Director will drive strategic initiatives and campus- wide discussions advancing equity and inclusion at Exeter. Working closely with the Principal and other key campus leaders, the Director will build, guide, and assess policies and practices that encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion as a means of bringing the Academy's bold vision to life. Founded in 1781 by John Phillips, Exeter has a tradition of academic excellence, a distinguished faculty, and a long history of educating young people to become dynamic global citizens, in the spirit of empathy and non sibi, or “not for self.” The Harkness method, a distinct pedagogical approach to living and learning at Exeter, is a simple yet revolutionary concept: twelve students and one teacher sit around an oval table and discuss the subject at hand. It begins in the classroom and extends beyond it, to the field, stage, and common room. Exeter offers a high quality education with abundant opportunities for intellectual and personal growth to approximately 1,100 students in grades 9 through post-graduate during the academic year and over 800 students during the summer sessions, well-supported by over 650 highly committed and dedicated faculty and staff. The school's charming in-town campus is situated on 672 acres in historic Exeter, New Hampshire, replete with bustling nearby arts and culture, all within an hour's drive of the cities of Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine. An inaugural role, the Director of Equity and Inclusion will serve as a senior-level visionary strategist, driving the direction and oversight of diversity initiatives and programs including, but not limited to, faculty and staff professional development; curricular initiatives; and recruitment, support and retention of faculty, staff, and students. These initiatives will advance an inclusive campus climate and cultivate within the campus community the knowledge, understanding, and skills to promote inclusion and equity, and effectively engage across differences. As a member of the Principal's Leadership Team and advisor to the Principal, the DEI is vested with the authority to advocate, generate ideas, develop initiatives, assess progress, and maintain accountability necessary to affect substantive, systemic progress and change. It is imperative that the Director establish relationships with stakeholders across independent school networks, locally and nationally, to cross-pollinate, develop and maintain equity and inclusion programming and to enhance Exeter's profile within the sphere of equity and inclusion. Additionally, the Director will provide resources and expertise on access and equity, with knowledge of nondiscrimination laws, regulations, and policies related to diversity and procedural knowledge for effectively responding to bias incidents, in collaboration with general counsel. The ideal candidate will be a proven content expert with a broad and contemporary understanding of diversity and inclusion scholarship and practice. An advanced degree (master's or equivalent) is preferred. The DEI will bring a proven track record of successfully creating diversity initiatives and collaborating with a broad range of constituencies in their implementation. Building on the commitment to unite knowledge and goodness central to the rich history of the school, the Directorship offers an accomplished professional the opportunity to meaningfully engage the Exeter community in dialogue, critical self-reflection, and transformative action to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff reach their fullest potential individually and collectively.
