T: 01452 887000] 4 RAMBLINGS FROM THE RECTORY “What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet “ Not an original thought, I agree, though I was fascinated to discover that this line from Romeo and Juliet is probably a dig by Wm Shakespeare at the sanitary arrangements of his rival ‘the Rose Theatre’—another bit of useless trivia stored away to emerge who knowS when! But names are important. None of us like being called by the wrong name. Being near ‘the Forest’, where ‘Sterry’ is a fairly normal name it is lovely not to be mislabelled constantly as ‘Terry’, ‘Berry’, or even, as befell my parents on a Wallace Arnold Coach Trip, ‘Mr & Mrs Strawberry.’ I put a lot of effort into remembering people’s names—and it seems to be much appreciated. For the past ten years we have been accustomed to calling our little cluster ‘The Forest Edge Group of Parishes’. But ‘Group’ can be a very tenuous word. We could take a photo of commuters and describe it as ‘a group of people standing on a platform at Gloucester Station’. We could speak of an artist having assembled a group of objects to paint a still life. ‘Group’ can imply things which are together haphazardly, with no particular purpose. Our four parishes are legally bound together by a Pastoral Measure which created out of two existing groupings a new benefice ‘commonly known as The Forest Edge Benefice’. I believe that one of my predecessors greatly disliked the word benefice. For him it referred only to the financial implications of our being together. I, just to be contrary, rather like it. The original meaning of the Latin ‘beneficium’ is ‘benefit’, or ‘something that does good.’ Benefice implies a grouping which is deliberate, and which comes together ‘for the common good’—rather like the somewhat later word commonwealth. Some may look back nostalgically to the days of Murray Penfold rattling around what is now the
