Box 24, 00014, Finland On the territories adjacent to the core Russia, the Russian language has had for centuries an estab- lished position as a language of culture, trade, war, statehood, and education. The theoretical framework of the study reflects the field of cross-cultural communication, with special reference to Finnish-Russian intercultural encounters. There is a certain set of prejudices connected with Russia that date back centu- ries and are periodically revived. Recent events have reinforced some of them, and have enhanced the demand for experts on Russia and everything connected with it. The language is undoubtedly consid- ered the key to understanding what is happening with Finland’s Eastern neighbour. The article aims to present the current discussions in the media, their meanings and functions. Key words: Finnish-Russian relationships, language and intercultural competence, cross-border ties, neighbouring countries, historical borrowings. INTRODUCTION Relationships with neighbouring countries are seldom straightforward (e.g., the Czechs and the Slovaks, the French and the Germans).     April 15, 2014 PUBLIC PROGRAMS New York – The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) has developed an assortment of public programs related to the landmark exhibition Sámi Stories: Art and Identity of an Arctic People, on view at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America Saturday, May 10 through Saturday, August 23, 2014. Programs include a free mobile audio guide of highlights and once-monthly docent tours; family-friendly workshops led by art educators; lectures and symposia on Sámi history, identity, and visual culture; a concert that weaves traditional joiking with folk music, jazz, and rock; extended gallery hours with drinks and DJ nights; and a cross-section of films and music videos that explore components of Sámi identity and visual storytelling. Curated by the Tromsø University Museum and Northern Norway Art Museum, Sámi Stories examines the history, identity, politics, and visual culture of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. Featuring a selection of contemporary artworks in a variety of media, including sculpture, video, installation, woodcut print, embroidery, and photography and traditional duodji (handicraft), including a reindeer milk scoop, shaman’s drum, cradle, and a selection of hats and dolls, Sámi Stories: Art and Identity of a Nordic People offers visitors an overview of Sámi history and visual culture from the 17th century to the present. The main goal was to visit a charity concert. Other aims were to design a tour that would be conveniently scheduled, low-priced and would satisfy customers’ needs. The trip was non-profit. All the costs, including organ- izer’s and driver’s expenses, were divided among the tourists. The thesis consists of theoretical comprehension and an empirical part. The the- oretical background was gathered from books, articles, lecture materials and other sources. The empirical part included actual marketing, planning and imple- menting the trip. It was concluded by carrying out a small customer satisfaction research. Outcomes were based on self-evaluation and the feedback collected from the customers. Analysis of the results showed that the trip was successful. The goals that were set in the beginning were reached. However, there was still a room for improvement concerning many aspects of the trip. Another part of the research indicated that there would be a potential for performing new projects for the same customers. Suggestions might be implemented in the future.

Seckler, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 My dissertation situates itself at the intersection of several fields: Soviet cultural studies, film genre theory, and masculinity studies. It investigates the articulation of genre categories in Soviet and post-Soviet cinema industries, with a specific focus on the cultural context within which the buddy film emerges in late Soviet culture.This genre is unique within contemporary Russian cinema for providing a visual and narrative structure within which the masculine crisis—a topic widely written about by Russian sociologists and gender scholars—becomes visible. This masculine crisis is more often than not masked by compensatory, hyper-macho images in other genres (e.g., war films, gangster films, historical epics). The buddy film, by contrast, exhibits a type of masculinity rarely glimpsed on screen; these characters are the disillusioned, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised men of late- and post-Soviet society.
