RICHARD WAGNER and HERTA MÜLLER by ANCA-ELENA LUCA CULTURAL IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY GERMAN-ROMANIAN LITERATURE: RICHARD WAGNER AND HERTA MÜLLER by ANCA-ELENA LUCA HOLDEN (Under the Direction of Martin Kagel) ABSTRACT In my dissertation, I discuss literary representations of cultural identity formation and dissolution in selected works by contemporary German-Romanian authors Richard Wagner and Herta Müller. Wagner and Müller are ethnic Germans who emerged as prominent authors under Ceauşescu‘s dictatorship. Along with other German-Romanian authors, they were part of the literary group Aktionsgruppe Banat (1972-75), one of the most important dissident groups in Romania. In their writings, Wagner and Müller openly criticized the communist regime. They also questioned the cultural identity of the Banat- Swabian communities in which they grew up. As a result of their political opposition to the regime, they were harassed by the Securitate and banned from publishing. Because of their German heritage, political experience under the communist regime, and their status as immigrants and political refugees in West Germany, Wagner and Müller occupy a unique position in contemporary German society and culture. In their works, they challenge the nation-state as the basis of German nationalism and question cultural definitions of ―Germanness‖ based on biological, territorial, and state- centered concepts. While Wagner‘s primary focus is on the cultural, linguistic, and political challenges that East-Central European ethnic German immigrants face in West Germany, Müller‘s works concentrate almost exclusively on the oppression and persecution under Ceauşescu‘s dictatorship and the tyrannical atmosphere of the Banat- Swabian village. In my analysis of Wagner‘s fiction, I discuss three figures of Banat-Swabian writers who construct personalized cultural identities and attempt to re-invent themselves as writers during Ceauşescu‘s regime and after immigration to West Germany. In my analysis of Müller‘s works, I examine the narrative strategies that five characters, four Banat Swabians and one ethnic German, employ to interrogate and resist conceptualizations of ―Germanness‖ in the aftermath of World War II, under Ceauşescu‘s dictatorship, and after immigration to West Germany. Wagner‘s characters negotiate triangular cultural identity paradigms between the ―periphery‖ (the Banat and communist Romania) and the ―center‖ (West Germany), which combine elements of Banat-Swabian, Romanian, and Western languages and cultures. The cultural identity of Müller‘s protagonists, however, is marked by acute fragmentation as a result of their traumatic experiences in the Banat-Swabian village and communist Romania. Geographical changes but also political, economical and social-cultural shifts. One of the most debated topics is the European Union and its impact on and outside the continent. This thesis is about the external influence of the EU, on one of the countries which borders the EU directly; Moldova. Before its independency from the Soviet Union in 1991, it never existed as a sovereign state. Moldova was one of the countries which were carved out of history by the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in 1940 as it became a Soviet State. The Soviet ideology was based on the creation of a separate Moldovan republic formed by an artificial Moldovan nation. Although the territory of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic was a former part of the Romanian province Bessarabia, the Soviets emphasized the unique and distinct culture of the Moldovans. To underline this uniqueness they changed the Moldovan writing from Latin to Cyrillic to make Moldovans more distinct from Romanians. When Moldova became independent in 1991, the country struggled with questions about its national identity, including its continued existence as a separate nation. In the 1990s some Moldovan politicians focussed on the option of reintegration in a Greater Romania. However this did not work out as expected, or at least hoped for, because the many years under Soviet rule and delinkage from Romania had changed Moldovan society deeply.

At the center of this debate is the state of exception through which the sovereign legitimizes the juridical order by suspending preexisting civil laws. As recent theorists have argued, this has become the paradigm for modern nation states. Walter Benjamin contends, however, that a permanent state of exception has existed since the Baroque and has subjected its victims to an empty eschaton, an end without messianic redemption and devoid of all meaning. As long as the order of the sovereign is based on the dialectical relationship between law- making and law-preserving violence, this state will persevere and the messianic promise will not come to fruition. Thus Benjamin conceives of another category of violence he calls “pure violence,” which lies outside of the juridical order altogether. This type of violence also has the ability to reinstate history insofar as the inevitability of the state of exception has ceased any historical continuity.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE FURTHEST WATCH OF THE REICH: NATIONAL SOCIALISM, ETHNIC GERMANS, AND THE OCCUPATION OF THE SERBIAN BANAT, 1941-1944 Mirna Zakic, Ph.D., 2011 Directed by: Professor Jeffrey Herf, Department of History This dissertation examines the Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) of the Serbian Banat (northeastern Serbia) during World War II, with a focus on their collaboration with the invading Germans from the Third Reich, and their participation in the occupation of their home region. It focuses on the occupation period (April 1941-October 1944) so as to illuminate three major themes: the mutual perceptions held by ethnic and Reich Germans and how these shaped policy; the motivation behind ethnic German collaboration; and the events which drew ethnic Germans ever deeper into complicity with the Third Reich. The Banat ethnic Germans profited from a fortuitous meeting of diplomatic, military, ideological and economic reasons, which prompted the Third Reich to occupy their home region in April 1941. They played a leading role in the administration and policing of the Serbian Banat until October 1944, when the Red Army invaded the Banat. The ethnic Germans collaborated with the Nazi regime in many ways: they accepted its worldview as their own, supplied it with food, administrative services and eventually soldiers. They acted as enforcers and executors of its policies, which benefited them as perceived racial and ideological kin to Reich Germans. These policies did so at the expense of the multiethnic Banat‟s other residents, especially Jews and Serbs. In this, the Third Reich replicated general policy guidelines already implemented inside Germany and elsewhere in German-occupied Europe.

    Dragons in Slavic and Romanian Cultures Nicolae STANCIU, Ph.D. University of Belgrade, Serbia [email protected] Abstract Due to its geographical position, the Romanian ethnic territory is at the confluence of various languages, cultures and civilizations and the Romanian culture shares many features with the Slavic cultures because of the linguistic and cultural contact and the similar historical conditions under which they flourished. The issue of Slavic influence on Romanian culture has appealed to many researchers that have sought to explain the mystery of how a Romance culture survived in a territory surrounded by Slavs. Similar customs and folk representations circulated in both directions – from common Romanian to the Slavic languages and cultures and vice versa. Some motifs concerning the demons should demonstrate a broad area of common or similar representations in both types of cultures. This work will thus offer a new approach to the study of the Romanian-Slavic and Romanian-Balkan relationship and we hope a synthetic and unified vision of their common elements, and it will try to give some new ideas about an unresolved, debated, and contentious topic.     Frederik Dörfler-Trummer HipHop aus Österreich Studien zur Popularmusik Frederik Dörfler-Trummer (Dr. phil.), geb. 1984, ist freier Musikwissenschaftler und forscht zu HipHop-Musik und artverwandten Popularmusikstilen. Er promovierte an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien.
