The time was right for some change with the departure of our previous CEO (Derek Torkington) who served us well through a difficult period. The appointment in October 2007 of Tim Shannahan as CEO has bought a fresh perspective to our operations with Tim introducing knowledge and experience gained from his previous position with Volleyball Australia. The Board and staff have welcomed Tim and the changes he has introduced while being ever mindful of our special Canterbury Hockey heritage and community spirit. Your Board has worked diligently with the CEO and hockey’s stakeholders to carefully identify and re-evaluate our position in Canterbury and New Zealand sport. Since incorporation of the former men’s and women’s associations as a combined entity (circa 1989) there has been significant change in the sport, particularly with more and more of our matches and trainings now being played on artificial fields, and although there have been continuing adjustments to our governance and management there had not been significant review of our practices and strategies in the ensuing period. The time was right to undertake these reviews and introduce some new direction. We have consulted, prepared and presented a new Strategic Plan in a simplified format that I encourage all those involved in our sport to read. This is the founding document of all that we seek to achieve on your behalf. Other major governance tasks undertaken this year include the review and significant amendment of our constitution. This revised document will be presented at the AGM in 2009 for adoption. In the CEO’s report you will see comment on the reviews and consultation regarding competitions format and representative programmes, all of which link through our new strategic plan. The Board and CEO have a paramount goal of achieving an additional CHA based artificial turf in place by April 2010, with a fifth Canterbury based turf some time shortly after that. Without this happening there is no space for growth of our turf based activities. On behalf of the Board I thank Tim and his management team for their enthusiasm, professionalism and hard work they have provided this year, with particular regard to the additional workloads affected through the reviews and preparation of new governance documents. I also pass on my thanks on your behalf to retiring Board members Michelle Hollands and Lin Thompson. Although I am sure that Lin will continue to serve us in some capacity I would be remiss not to note his outstanding service to Canterbury Hockey. Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 2 July 2015 Newsletter #79a Scroll down to see how you could win a Panasonic sound system worth $1500 Vodafone Warriors v Canberra Raiders Tuimoala Lolohea scores a fantastic try! Photos courtesy of www.photosport.co.nz HAT A fantastic time we had at Mt Smart, home of the Vodafone Warriors, on Saturday. WThe team did us proud, putting the Canberra Raiders to the sword, winning 30-8 with Tuimoala Lolo- hea getting a double, but the whole team played well. It was a tremendous way for Jacob Lillyman to celebrate playing his 200th NRL game, and for Bodene Thompson to bring up his century. Unfortunately, because I am hosting the Mad Butcher Club in the Stacey Jones Lounge, I don’t always see as much of the game as I would like, but the payback is meeting fabulous people. Because of health and safety rules, we are only allowed 228 people, so getting in is not always easy, but on Saturday we had people from all over the country, including a group from Wanganui, who were able to attend courtesy of the club, just as a break from their flooding troubles. We must have sung Happy Birthday a half a dozen times. First for Sam Harris, 10, from Christchurch. We made a fuss of him and his father tells me he has not stopped talking about it yet. Then there was the five-year-old son of Bradley King, The Rock Station Manager.
