CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 5 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

After several years of consolidation and stabilisation of administration structure and practices at CHA the Board has this year sought to review operations and governance with a focus on the future needs of our ‘Family of Hockey’ in Canterbury, while being mindful of the values and traditions that we are proud and respectful of.

The time was right for some change with the departure of our previous CEO (Derek Torkington) who served us well through a difficult period. The appointment in October 2007 of Tim Shannahan as CEO has bought a fresh perspective to our operations with Tim introducing knowledge and experience gained from his previous position with Volleyball Australia. The Board and staff have welcomed Tim and the changes he has introduced while being ever mindful of our special Canterbury Hockey heritage and community spirit.

Your Board has worked diligently with the CEO and hockey’s stakeholders to carefully identify and re-evaluate our position in Canterbury and New Zealand sport. Since incorporation of the former men’s and women’s associations as a combined entity (circa 1989) there has been significant change in the sport, particularly with more and more of our matches and trainings now being played on artificial fields, and although there have been continuing adjustments to our governance and management there had not been significant review of our practices and strategies in the ensuing period. The time was right to undertake these reviews and introduce some new direction.

We have consulted, prepared and presented a new Strategic Plan in a simplified format that I encourage all those involved in our sport to read. This is the founding document of all that we seek to achieve on your behalf. Other major governance tasks undertaken this year include the review and significant amendment of our constitution. This revised document will be presented at the AGM in 2009 for adoption.

In the CEO’s report you will see comment on the reviews and consultation regarding competitions format and representative programmes, all of which link through our new strategic plan.

The Board and CEO have a paramount goal of achieving an additional CHA based artificial turf in place by April 2010, with a fifth Canterbury based turf some time shortly after that. Without this happening there is no space for growth of our turf based activities.

On behalf of the Board I thank Tim and his management team for their enthusiasm, professionalism and hard work they have provided this year, with particular regard to the additional workloads affected through the reviews and preparation of new governance documents. I also pass on my thanks on your behalf to retiring Board members Michelle Hollands and Lin Thompson. Although I am sure that Lin will continue to serve us in some capacity I would be remiss not to note his outstanding service to Canterbury Hockey.

Richard Munt Chairman

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 6 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

The 2007-08 year for the Canterbury Hockey Association could best be described as one of change, challenge and achievement. The direction from the Board indicated that it was time for the organisation to push forward and significantly improve performance both on and off of the hockey field. The Board wished to focus on the strategic challenges confronting hockey and as a result the staff had to be far more responsible for the operational elements of the organisation.

The development of a new Strategic Plan as the foundation document to guide the operational direction was seen as a key outcome for the year and as a result of the stakeholder-orientated process used in the development of the plan the organisation certainly has clarity as to what its priorities will be in the coming years. Work currently underway on the review of the Constitution and various policy documents will further define the governance processes of the organisation and provide staff and volunteer committees with clear parameters in which to operate.

The financial systems of the organisation were examined and a variety of changes made to related processes to ensure short-term sustainability. Improved financial management and reporting processes allowed for staff to be more responsible for the financial performance of their respective operational areas. Targets with regard to funding from various gaming machine trusts and community groups were reassessed with the aim of maximising returns while the opportunity to access these funds exists, but being ever mindful that a reliance on these funding sources can be detrimental in the long-term. Most importantly, the organisation accepted the philosophy that being a not-for-profit organisation does not mean that achieving a surplus is wrong, it just means that the organisation recognises that to fund future projects it needs to generate surpluses over time. It is in this light that the organisation can proudly announce a surplus for the year of $159,295, which has been achieved by increasing revenue from a variety of sources, but one of which has not been the traditional hockey participant. The financial accounts identify that $135,000 of this surplus has been transferred to a Turf Development Reserve as a new artificial field is the immediate future project.

The staffing needs of the organisation were also examined and an application was submitted to the Canterbury West Coast Sports Trust, more commonly known as Sport Canterbury, for funding for a CoachForce Officer. The state of coaching in the province had been identified as an area of concern, both in terms of quantity and quality. The application was successful, beating eight other sports for the available funding, and Chris Leslie’s appointment to the role will be a real benefit to the sport locally in the coming years. As a result of this appointment, it was decided not to replace Lyndsey Leask in the Personal Assistant role in the Development area when she retired in April. Other staffing changes saw Mal Rainbow depart from the Facilities Officer – Porritt Park position due to health concerns and Steven Hill has filled the void for much of the year in a short-term contracted capacity. Accessing an intern from the University of Amsterdam, Annemarijn Handgraaf, has been of benefit and the option of accommodating further interns as a cost-effective resource is being investigated.

The need to address the very real shortage in playing facilities was a major focus during the year. The organisation fully engaged in the Christchurch City Council’s Metropolitan Sports Facilities Plan process and is grateful for the positive response of the hockey community to also engage in this process. That the hockey community contributed over 50% of all submissions to this process means that irrespective of the outcome for hockey in the final

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 7 Plan when released by the Council in early 2009, hockey made the most of the opportunity to be heard and put its case forward. Other efforts in relation to facilities resulted in the Canterbury Hockey Foundation Trust being able to refinance a significant portion of its current debt at greatly reduced interest rates; submissions were made to the Waimakariri and Selwyn District Councils to incorporate the provision of hockey facilities in their respective long-term plans; and guidance was provided to a variety of local groups considering the development of their own hockey fields that would be accessible to the hockey community. Most importantly, the organisation is committed to ensuring that prior to the 2010 season there will definitely be an additional hockey field in Christchurch. The disappointment in relation to facilities was that the resurfacing of Nunweek Park under warranty did not proceed due to manufacturing issues and another season was played on a substandard surface. Hopefully there will be no such issues and the resurfacing will occur January 2009.

Results on the representative front were pleasing, with Canterbury winning more national titles (seven) than any other province. Results across the board, from primary through to masters, demonstrated the strength of the sport in Canterbury and the capabilities of the coaches associated with each team. It was identified during the year that further work is needed to refine existing representative processes, in particular with regard to trials and selection procedures, and these will be addressed prior to the 2009 season. The cost to players of being a member of a representative team increased markedly this year as a result of increases in transportation costs. However, the organisation is limited in its capacity to subsidise representative players’ costs over and above the current provisions made through gaming machine trust funding.

In contrast, the results in the National Hockey League (NHL) were not as desired, and despite efforts to improve the preparation of the teams by hosting teams from the Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport, both teams failed to make their respective final. Most other teams are now utilising the ability to field international guest players and this has been identified as a contributing factor to the perceived edge over Canterbury teams, but with the budget for the Canterbury teams already significantly in excess of all other teams, the financial capacity to incur further costs is questionable. The drain of players to the Auckland area to access better opportunities for national selection is also a concern. To address these issues it will be necessary for the identification of innovative concepts to close the current gap and coaches and players will need to be a part of this process.

The local competitions continued to be delivered by dedicated volunteers, all of whom the organisation is incredibly grateful to for their contribution. It is often easy to forget that most sporting organisations were established to service their members and for this organisation that means delivery of organised competitions for the clubs and schools remains a high priority. The opportunity was taken at a couple of levels to review competition structures and it is hoped that the competitions delivered in 2009 will be closer to what is currently desired by members. The Competition By-Laws were a source of some unforeseen irregularities this year and work is underway to remedy these ahead of the 2009 season and ensure the By-Laws serve a more generic purpose.

The Development area has perhaps experienced the greatest change in direction this year. As already mentioned the CoachForce role was added, and this has provided the scope to increase the activities within this area. In addition to the improved services on offer to coaches, there has been the ability to consolidate requirements to service existing agreements with Lincoln University and Hockey New Zealand; introduce service delivery agreements with all four of the organisation’s regional partners (Malvern, Mid Canterbury,

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 8 South Canterbury and the West Coast); consolidate existing participation programmes (e.g. Hockey FUNdamentals); develop new participation programmes (e.g Canterbury Hockey Association School of Excellence (CHASE)); and focus on club development by partnering with Sport Canterbury and Hockey New Zealand to develop a hockey-specific best-practice programme for implementation in 2009. It is expected over the coming year that the hockey community will be able to recognise the considerable work within the Development area and as a result better understand how this area of operations can assist clubs and schools.

A source of much frustration this year has been the website, with the previous website failing completely towards the end of the year. A commitment has been made to utilise SportingPulse, Australasia’s largest provider of websites to sporting organisations, moving forward. It is expected that as a result of the new product, which will be in place from early 2009, that the website will become a far more effective communication tool.

2008 marked 100 years of women’s hockey in Canterbury and it was pleasing to see this recognised and celebrated by the hockey community. The associated function certainly highlighted the traditions and heritage of the sport and provided the opportunity to reflect on the past.

The past year has certainly been incredibly busy and it would appear that no let up is likely in 2009. There remains so much capacity for improvement within the sport in Canterbury and in partnership with our members the Canterbury Hockey Association is determined to make further improvements. However, it is vital that our members are committed partners in this process and engage in opportunities to provide input in the direction of the organisation. Attempts have been made to seek more input from members in the past year through surveys, meetings and workshops, but the response to these opportunities has suggested that in general there is a level of apathy within the members. It is hoped that as improvements are made, members will see greater benefit in engaging in the various opportunities that will continue to be provided and desire to be a part of the process.

It is only right that key stakeholders who have contributed to a successful year are acknowledged. On that basis the Canterbury Hockey Association wishes to thank The Canterbury Community Trust, the Christchurch City Council, all of the gaming machine trusts, our sponsors and service providers for their support.

To the staff, thank you for your efforts in the past year. I know it has been challenging to operate in an environment that has experienced so much change in operating processes, but hopefully the outcomes that are starting to be realised make it worthwhile. Similarly, to the volunteers that have served on operational committees or contributed time towards various projects, thank you for your continued service to the sport.

To the Board, in particular Richard Munt as Chairman, I would like to acknowledge that you have been the most effective Board I have had the opportunity to work with and that is simply because the difference between governance and operations is generally understood. I look forward to working with and for you in the coming year to achieve the goals that have been identified as the strategic focus.

Tim Shannahan Chief Executive Officer

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 9 SPONSORSHIP, EVENTS & MARKETING REPORT

In the past year the primary focus of the Sponsorship, Events & Marketing area of operations has been maximising the funds received from gaming machine and community trusts, while seeking to make improvements to enhance the ability to obtain sponsorship and deliver quality events befitting of the Canterbury Hockey Association.

Over the last twelve months many gaming machine trusts have amalgamated and in combination with a reduction in the amount of available funding for distribution, this has created a perception that sporting organisations must accept a reduction in the funding they will receive. Despite this situation, as a result of smart planning and the preparation of effective applications these changes in the funding environment have had an insignificant impact on the Canterbury Hockey Association. Over 30 applications totalling close to $1.1 million were submitted this year and although less than 50% of the total funding requested was approved, this year has been the most successful to date in terms of total funding received. The table below identifies the funding received from the various gaming machine and community trusts during the 2008 financial year:

Bendigo Valley Sport & Charitable Foundation $ 6,000.00 Caversham Foundation $ 4,000.00 Christchurch City Council $ 24,972.22 Eureka Trust $ 50,000.00 Lion Foundation $ 40,000.00 New Zealand Community Trust $ 65,000.00 Pub Charity $ 20,000.00 Perry Foundation $ 37,300.00 Southern Trust $ 57,283.80 The Canterbury Community Trust $ 107,000.00 The Mainland Foundation (previously The Canterbury Foundation) $ 50,000.00 The Trust Charitable Foundation (Inc.) $ 15,000.00

Given the focus on maximising returns from funding opportunities, sponsorship revenue has experienced only small increases on previous years. Sponsorship, given the current economic climate, is becoming more difficult to obtain and therefore to be successful it is a matter of recognising that sponsorship is no longer simply an exchange of cash or contra for a level of branding and/or exposure. There needs to be a business partnership and a demonstration to a potential sponsor as to what the Canterbury Hockey Association can truly offer that is tangible in nature. With this in mind a professional sponsorship proposal has been developed for use in sponsorship approaches and will from next year be the basis of any approach to a potential sponsor. There is also a desire to utilise clubs and players as sponsorship agents to maximise the personal connections that exist within the hockey community to broker sponsorship partnerships.

The main outcomes that were achieved in sponsorship were Scenic Circle Hotels re-signing as the naming sponsor for the Canterbury Cavaliers through to the end of 2009 and Pica Print, who are also the Canterbury Hockey Association’s preferred clothing supplier, becoming the new naming rights sponsor for the Canterbury Cats through to 2010. There are eleven sponsors that had fence signage during the year that was not part of a contra relationship. The support given by all sponsors is greatly appreciated.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 10 Fundraising events in 2008 included the NHL Fundraising Dinner & Auction, with Chris Doig as the guest speaker and 114 people attending the evening held at the Christchurch Town Hall, and the annual Golf Tournament held at Waitikiri Golf Club.

The Awards Dinner took a new direction this year with the Addington Race Course used as the venue and the evening sought to recognise all aspects of the sport, unifying what had previously been a number of different awards across various operational areas. The night was considered a vast improvement on previous years and a similar format will be repeated next year. Stacey Carr, Bradley Shaw and Chris Leslie were the guest speakers, as they were interviewed by master of ceremonies, Chris Bond, in relation to their recent Olympic experiences.

The Legends Night also took a new approach. Sponsored by Key Business Partners, the evening doubled as an opportunity for past Canterbury senior representative players to reunite and remember former successes in the red and black, but was also used as an opportunity to present this year’s Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers and Pica Print Canterbury Cats with their playing shirts three days before heading to Auckland to contest the National Hockey League.

The marketing aspect of this area of operations continues to be limited. It is recognised that the primary reason as to why a sport organisation conducts marketing activities is to increase its player base. With limited capacity at present to increase the player base of the sport until further artificial fields are available any investment in marketing will achieve minimal results. Examples of the marketing that did occur include radio and newspaper promotions and media releases. Internally, this year has marked the development and distribution of the first three issues of the Canterbury Hockey bi-monthly e-newsletter, which provides updates as to what has been happening in the various areas of the sport.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 11

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 12 PARTICIPATION & DEVELOPMENT REPORT

The Participation and Development area has undergone a number of changes this year. In terms of personnel, Lyndsey Leask retired in April after ten years service. About the same time Chris Leslie was appointed to the role of CoachForce Hockey Officer. The CoachForce role is partially funded by Sport Canterbury via a SPARC initiative to improve the quantity and quality of coaches within sport to facilitate better experiences for participants. Given the lack of coaches locally, with many coaches applying their skills with multiple teams and other teams not able to find a coach, the ability to dedicate a staff member within Canterbury hockey to address this situation is seen as a positive step. It is worth noting that a requirement of the Sport Canterbury funding is that the CoachForce Hockey Officer provides services to the regional associations within the greater Canterbury area (i.e. Malvern, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the West Coast).

The provision of skill development opportunities have increased this year. The Summer Camps were again a huge success with over 130 children taking part during January. The Pathway programme was opened to all players in the under 16 and under 18 age groups who wanted some extra training and in total over 110 participated. Holiday skills clinics took place in the April and July school holidays, and while the lack of turf availability did limit the number of days offered, there were still two days in April and five in July that resulted in more than 50 people per day on average attending the sessions delivered at Porritt Park.

In addition, the Junior Committee continued to deliver the elite coaching programmes of Southern Stars and Striker Development, benefitting many talented young players in Canterbury. These programmes continue to evolve and progress to bring the very best skill coaching to the players.

In an effort to consolidate the various programmes delivered to participants a re-branding exercise was conducted. The intent was to make it simpler for the public to understand the various programmes on offer given many of the existing programmes, while different in name and time of year delivered, where identical in nature. Two brands have been created, with these being CHASE (Canterbury Hockey School of Excellence) and Hockey FUNdamentals. Both programmes are available to anyone, but the focus is slightly different. The CHASE programme is technical skills based with a low player to coach ratio to enhance skill development. In contrast Hockey FUNdamentals is about providing fun experiences within hockey and any skill development that may result is seen as a bonus. With regard to the existing programmes that were on offer, the Pathway programme will fall under the CHASE banner in 2009 and the Summer Camps and holiday programmes will be branded Hockey FUNdamentals.

Hockey New Zealand continued to provide funding in exchange for service delivery of the national development programme. This involved coordinating regional coaching clinics for the under 16 and under 18 age groups over the second week of the April school holidays as part of a talent identification process, with over 50 players attending by invitation. The other major activity required was the delivery of school visits, which are intended to provide students with a positive first experience of hockey. In the past many of these clinics where delivered by assistant development officers, but this year they were primarily delivered by the Development Manager. In 2008 47 school visits took place, involving 735 students.

The Canterbury Hockey Association continued its association with the Lincoln University Sports Scholarships programme this year. The applications for 2008 were of a very high

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 13 standard, with five of the seven hockey scholarship recipients representing Canterbury in 2008, some of them in more than one team. The Sports Scholarships programme is now entering its tenth year and still remains an excellent vehicle to get new talent into the province and retain existing talent. Interest is still high around the country with in excess of 20 applications being received for the 2009 year. The Canterbury Hockey Association would like to thank Lincoln University for their support and partnership on the programme.

Current Lincoln University hockey scholars:

Year One Year Two Year Three Campbell Bower Josh Hunt Warwick Allen Rob Dickie John Innes-Smith Samara Heaney Chris Goldsbury Gareth Levers Rob McLean Anna Wetherall Toby O’Donnell Ben Rutherford Margo Thomson

Following the receipt of funding from SPARC to enhance its ClubMark programme, Sport Canterbury approached Hockey New Zealand and the Canterbury Hockey Association to assist in the development of a modified ClubMark resource that is hockey specific. The ClubMark programme has been delivered for a number of years and various local hockey clubs have at various times engaged in the programme which seeks to encourage best- practice processes by clubs by working to achieve bronze, silver and gold standards of performance. From 2009 the revised version of ClubMark will incorporate in the checklists content that is more specific to hockey and an aspect of the partnership with Sport Canterbury will see the programme trialled in Canterbury in 2009 before potential national roll-out in 2010.

As mentioned the CoachForce role commenced in April and to date the workload has been about setting up the platform for the role to begin to show tangible benefits from next year. To date some quality seminars (62 coaches attended the four seminars delivered, including an intensive seminar on how to use the Sportscode Gamebreaker computer software) and mentoring opportunities (18 coaches) have been provided, but the new year also intends to bring the delivery of numerous Hockey New Zealand accredited coaching courses. A Canterbury coach database has also been compiled and will be an asset in disseminating information directly to coaches in the future.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 14 FACILITIES REPORT

The role of the Canterbury Hockey Association with regard to the facilities at Porritt Park and Nunweek Park continues to be the management of the facilities on behalf of the owners, the Canterbury Hockey Foundation Trust (CHFT). This management function requires not only the maintenance of the facilities, but ensuring that all components of the lease agreements of the CHFT with the Christchurch City Council are delivered to a suitable standard.

For the first time in a number of years there has been changes in the Facilities staff, with Mal Rainbow’s departure due to health reasons resulting in Steven Hill working for most of the year. A beneficial relationship has been established with the Department of Corrections which has resulted in a number of individuals required to complete community service for various misdemeanours contributing in excess of 5,000 hours in the past year to assist in various maintenance tasks at both parks.

The facilities at Porritt Park remain in a reasonably good condition. The Porritt 1 field continues to play well, as does the Porritt 2 field, although the latter will require some repairs around both circles over the coming summer ahead of the 2009 season. The standard maintenance works were carried out over the past year and included replacing lights in the light towers, replacing fence panels around the Porritt 1 field, repairing goals and painting/staining various interior and exterior surfaces. Tasks that have been identified for the coming year, if funds permit, include repairing the dugouts on Porritt 2 (replacing the carbonised glass which was damaged during the past season) and raising those dugouts to provide more head space; developing video analysis platforms for both fields given these have become a Hockey New Zealand tournament requirement; and increasing the size of the safety nets behind the goals.

The Christchurch City Council have indicated that the desired works on the Porritt Stadium, which had been scheduled for last year, will definitely not proceed. Instead the Council have commenced a series of upgrades to the existing stadium that will include new seating, new balustrades, an exterior paint job, internal tiling in the bays in the lounge and repairing water damage to the lounge roof.

At Nunweek Park it was disappointing that for reasons beyond the control of the Canterbury Hockey Association the scheduled turf replacement under warranty did not proceed in January. However, despite the surface continuing to deteriorate over the past year and copious amounts of green fluff attaching to players’ shoes, it was still a satisfactory field for lower level matches. It is now expected that the new surface will be in place by January 2009.

Similar maintenance projects to those identified as being completed at Porritt Park occurred at Nunweek and as a result there will be minimal work this off-season to prepare for 2009.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 15 COMPETITIONS REPORT

Senior & Youth Competitions A number of changes were implemented for the 2008 Senior and Youth Competitions in an effort to improve the quality of the competitions for participants. These changes included the removal of the right for matches to be deferred; the right for players to ‘play up’ only four matches before becoming a member of the higher graded team; the renaming of the end of the season Subsidiary Competition as the Porritt Cup and was played on specific weekends during the season that were identified as likely to be of concern to teams due to player unavailability; and the introduction of finals to determine the winners of the various grades.

The changes relating to no deferments and the Porritt Cup have been generally well received and will continue for the foreseeable future. However the introduction of finals received mixed views during the season and issues developed with regard to the interpretation of the Competition By-Laws with regard to the legitimacy of finals. As a result a compromise had to be reached with regard to the promotion and relegation processes from this year for the 2009 season. While this situation was regrettable, the concept of a Finals Day was successful. Thank you to the clubs and schools who gave Finals Day their support. The Grass competition has included a Finals Day for a number of years and it has been a feature of the competition that can hopefully become replicated in the Senior & Youth competitions.

A review of the competitions occurred at the end of the season and the results of which provided a fair degree of validation for the manner in which the Competitions Committee has been operating. The end-of-season meeting with clubs and schools in the coming month will be used to communicate the outcomes of the review and hopefully resolve any aspects that the review found inconclusive in terms of the views of respondents.

A concern that will be considered in the coming year is the limited number of games teams in the Youth divisions receive during a season. These players certainly are entitled to more than twelve games.

It is appropriate to acknowledge the contribution of the committee members for their efforts in delivering these competitions. The current committee is fortunate to have individuals with backgrounds in umpiring, coaching and of course playing, with most having served for many years on the committee and therefore able to bring a wealth of knowledge to discussions at meetings. Special thanks to Lin Thompson for his leadership of this committee and to Graham Jackson, who has once again been professional and painstaking in carrying out the secretary’s duties. Also it is important to acknowledge the contributions of the register keepers, Mike McIlroy and John Turner, who have again been conscientious in striving to encourage teams to provide reliable records of matches and players, and notifying clubs when players are getting close to the ‘play up’ limit.

In terms of the size of the competitions this year, the registered participant numbers were: Open Men 538 Open Women 472 Secondary School Boys 436 Secondary School Girls 513

The total number of players, 1,959, was a slight decrease on 2007 (2,052).

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 20 Senior Grass Competitions

It had been intended that with an earlier season start (April), that this year’s competition would involve two full rounds to decide the competition winners and then to complete the season a mixed competition. The players were certainly looking forward to the change of format from previous years. Unfortunately inclement weather did not allow this and the season was marred from numerous weather cancellations, the most in a number of years.

A concern this year was the reduction in entries, with Hinemoa/Kaiapoi men not entering and during the early part of the season, the Selwyn Blue men’s team was also forced to withdraw due to a lack of player numbers. It will be hoped that both teams will be able to participate in 2009, but it is a concern that there seems to be a gradual decline in numbers playing on the grass, with early indications that there may even be one less women’s team in 2009. It is timely to review the restrictions on players in the Grass Competitions and allow any player from Division 2 and below in the turf competitions to participate on grass. However, teams need to be proactive in their player recruitment and identify players from the summer competitions – Masters & Summer Social – as potential players.

Thank you to Bev Savage for her work as Convenor of the Grass Competitions and Mike McIlroy for the production of the draws, especially given the requirement to make several changes during the season to account for the weather. Thank you also to all the players, coaches and umpires who supported Grass Hockey over the 2008 season and we look forward to your involvement again in 2009.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 21 Junior Competitions

Junior competitions continued in their usual vibrant manner. A high number of grades of major competitions were extremely hard fought with close results. The overall standard was very good with many of the younger grades exhibiting good skill levels. The Premier competitions saw Harewood take out the double this year and both their male and female teams stood out as clear winners.

Junior hockey continues to use every available artificial surface that is suitable to playing hockey as numbers continue to grow. Female numbers have a solid growth trend over a number of seasons and it is pleasing to see the decline in male numbers over recent seasons is subsiding, with some growth shown this year. One of the advantages this sport has had in the last few seasons is being able to play when usual junior sport grass venues were closed due to excessively waterlogged pitches. However, using twelve artificial venues and several grass venues means the logistical exercise of administering draws, supervision of venues and results needs to be run well. It is thanks to the Junior Competitions Committee and Draw Convenor that this process continues to work smoothly.

A general Code of Conduct was introduced this year which has linked the team entry with the code. Clubs/schools through their team officials were overall responsible for ensuring they, their players and supporters behaved in a manner that provides a positive and fun environment for everyone involved. It was extremely pleasing that the overall standard of behaviour lifted considerably this year with the Committee dealing with only a few minor situations.

The growth in playing numbers is highlighted in the figures below: 2006 Girls - 1,078 Boys - 510 Total - 1,588 2007 Girls – 1,106 Boys – 509 Total – 1,615 2008 Girls – 1,153 Boys - 562 Total - 1,715

Total team numbers by grade for 2008 were: Boys Premier 11-a-side 8 Teams Girls Premier 11-a-side 21 Teams Boys Super 8 12 Teams Girls Super 8 21 Teams Boys Intermediate 8 14 Teams Girls Intermediate 8 23 Teams Boys Junior 8 14 Teams Girls Junior 8 28 Teams 6-a-side Teams 26 Teams

Junior hockey continues to flourish due to the considerable time and effort put in by a large number of volunteers. Thank you to all those who provided input - coaches, managers, club/school administrators, umpire coaches, the draw administrator, venue supervisors, umpires - and in particular the members of the Junior Hockey Management Committee, especially Chris Edwards for his leadership in this area of operations.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 24 Masters Competitions

The local competition had a change of guard this year with Harewood Red winning the women’s section. Harewood men again won the men’s section, but it was a very closely fought battle.

The focus of the strategic goals for masters’ hockey in 2009 will be to grow our local competition by increasing the participation level. Masters’ sport is one of the fastest growing areas of sport in New Zealand and it is important that we are part of that growth within our local competition. It may mean that a two-tiered approach is needed to ensure that the more elite masters’ players still have access to a strong competition to maintain their skills, but a new section of play could be developed to encourage more ‘social’ masters’ players into the sport.

The passing of Graeme Cox in December 2007 was a very sad moment within the masters’ hockey community. Graeme had been active in the Sydenham club for many years before becoming involved in the Canterbury Hockey Association administration and then masters’ hockey in latter years. We remember him for his love of playing the sport, and in particular, his contribution to the Masters’ Committee as assistant treasurer, manager to the Canterbury 55+ men’s team and also his role as ‘chef de mission’ to all of the Canterbury teams at the national masters’ tournaments. The Graeme Cox Memorial Trophy is a new award which commemorates the outstanding contribution made by Graeme Cox to masters’ hockey in Canterbury. Testament to the respect he had from the masters’ community was the overwhelming response of players when asked to donate funding towards the commissioning of this trophy.

The contribution of the Masters’ Committee must again be acknowledged, in particular Mary-Anne Dunlop for her leadership and secretary Pam Thompson, in achieving another successful year, both with the local competition and in the performance of Canterbury teams at national tournament.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 25 UMPIRES REPORT

The past season has been another busy one for Canterbury Hockey Umpires Council (CHUC) in its management of umpires at the senior and youth levels.

There continues to be concerns from clubs at the number of fixtures each week that require clubs to supply their own umpires as appointed umpires are not in sufficient quantity. The reality is that this will remain the way in which appointments have to be made until such time as there is a significant influx of accredited umpires that can be appointed by CHUC. This will require clubs to help in the recruitment process and a number of concepts are being considered that could be implemented to encourage a successful outcome in the coming years. Funding obtained from the Christchurch City Council to support umpire education by a number of clubs should be used as an incentive for individuals to attend education courses.

It is appropriate to recognise Colleen Cameron for her tireless efforts in umpire development and Jan McDonald for making the weekly umpire appointments. Hilary Stubbs, Annie Rodgers and Gary Love also served the committee well this year. Finally it is appropriate to acknowledge the outstanding leadership provided by Graeme Wright over a number of years that made such a difference to the status of umpiring in Canterbury. Having now moved overseas, Graeme will be surely missed.

A significant change that occurred towards the end of the financial year was that CHUC formally adopted a revised Terms of Reference that means CHUC is now a full operational committee of the Canterbury Hockey Association. Hopefully this change will see result in the advancement of umpiring in the coming years as a result of the Canterbury Hockey Association, and in particular its staff, being more actively involved in umpire administration, as opposed to leaving this vital area solely to the volunteers within CHUC.

The Junior Umpiring programme completed its third full year under the administration of the Junior Hockey Management Committee. The emphasis this year was to further develop the Super 8 introductory programme and to this end Lyndsey Jones, who was appointed to run the Nunweek umpiring programme, gave that venue a huge boost. Jo Steele continued with the excellent work at the St Margaret’s venue.

A highlight of the 2008 season from a junior umpire perspective was Holly Gibbs – appointed to umpire the final of the Collier Trophy tournament; Peter Clark – appointed to umpire the final of the hatch Cup tournament and Sandy Clark – appointed to umpire the final of the U16 National Championship tournament. This was a tremendous result for the Junior Umpiring programme.

Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers

After finishing second in the 2007 Men’s National Hockey League (NHL), there were certainly high hopes that the Cavaliers could go one better this year. Grant Edwards was reappointed as coach, and was ably assisted again by Robin Wilson (assistant coach) and David Cattermole (manager) during the campaign. The team also accessed Matt Ingram (fitness and conditioning) and Vaughan Thomas (physiotherapist).

In recognition that a lack of quality preparation matches prior to the NHL had been an issue in previous years attempts were made to find an appropriate Australian team that could provide meaningful preparation matches a few weeks out from the start of the NHL. The Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport (ACTAS) hockey teams were sourced and hosted in early September for a quadrangular tournament that also involved Southern and Canterbury B. The matches played during the NZCT Hockey Series between the Cavaliers and ACTAS were considered valuable by the coaches given the close and tough nature of the two matches played, with a 1-all draw being followed with a 3-2 win to ACTAS. The visit of ACTAS also resulted in the team sourcing an international guest player, Adam Baxter, to cover the void left by the unavailability of national team player Hayden Shaw.

The structure of NHL changed this year as a result of the Olympics and rather than the traditional multi-weekend concept, the NHL was contested over 10 days in Auckland. This format demanded more from the players in terms of fitness and injury management. The team was certainly competitive, but in the end had to settle for fourth place.

The team’s results at the NHL were: Southern won 9-3 Central won 6-1 Auckland lost 4-3 Midlands lost 5-1 Wellington drew 2-2 Northland won 6-3 North Harbour drew 1-1 North Harbour lost 6-2 (playoff for third/fourth)

Thank you to the coaching and management team, as well as all of the players for making themselves available to represent their province.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 28 Pica Print Canterbury Cats

2007 had been a disappointing year for the Cats after finishing sixth, the teams lowest placing in over two decades, and this presented the need to review and rebuild in 2008. As a result of Chris Leslie moving to Christchurch to take up the CoachForce role with the Canterbury Hockey Association he was a logical coach for the team given he had won three of the previous four Women’s National Hockey Leagues (NHL) with either Wellington or Central. Chris was assisted by Pat Barwick (assistant coach/manager) and Dan Inns (assistant coach), with both having to play significant roles in the team’s build up while Chris was on national team duties. Like the Cavaliers, the team utilised Matt Ingram (fitness and conditioning) and had Devint Fakir as its physiotherapist.

Given the decision to rebuild and the unavailability of a number of last year’s team, the 2008 Cats were very young. Many of the players had been members of the successful Under 21 team that won a national title earlier in the year. The team was fortunate to be able to have Stacey Carr provide much needed experience and leadership following her return from the Beijing Olympics.

The Cats also played matches against the Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport (ACTAS) as part of their preparation, managing a 1-all draw and a 1-0 loss.

Given the change of structure for the 2008 NHL, being a week long tournament, it was a distinct disadvantage that injury required the team to utilise only 16 players, at times 15 players, for much of the week. However, while the finishing position of sixth was the same as the previous year, the team showed they have considerable potential, overcoming a slow start to knock over teams that finished above them by the end of the week.

The team’s results at the NHL were: North Harbour lost 3-2 Northland lost 3-1 Wellington lost 4-1 Auckland won 1-0 Southern won 4-2 Central lost 2-1 Midlands won 4-2 Central lost 4-3 (playoff for fifth/sixth)

Thank you to the coaching and management team, as well as all of the players for making themselves available to represent their province.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 29 Senior B Representative Teams

The Senior B programme gained further credibility this year with more players trialling for the two teams and the links between these teams and the National Hockey League squads are a major contributing factor. Both teams competed at the Hockey New Zealand National Senior Tournament at North Harbour, with the men finishing third and the women fourth.

Youth Representative Teams

Canterbury had a very successful year with its Under 21, Under 18 and Under 16 teams, winning four national A titles. The success of both Under 21 teams and both Under 16 teams were all pleasing for very different reasons. The Under 21 Men went into the tournament confident that the team had the ability to win and were certainly a favourite. That the team was able to progress undefeated was a real tribute to the players and coaches. The Under 21 Women were always likely to be near the top, but the Northern team was stacked with quality players, many of whom were in national squads, and so for the team to beat Northern twice, once in the round robin and then again in the final was an impressive accomplishment.

The Under 16 Girls were also undefeated in their title success, relying on a tough defence to get them through the latter stages of the tournament with a number of single goal margins of victory. The Under 16 Boys opened their tournament with a shock 5-1 loss to Manawatu, but followed that up with five wins to take the title.

Results with the various B and Development teams in the Youth age bracket suggest Canterbury can expect further success in the coming years.

Thank you to all coaches, managers, parents and of course players for their contributions to the Representative programme.

Primary Representative Teams

It was another successful year with the highlight being the Girls’ Primary A team win at the Collier Trophy National Tournament, backing up the 2007 success. This now takes Canterbury wins at this tournament to twelve – 1982, 1985, 1990-91, 1995, 1997-2000, 2004, 2007 and 2008. The strength of Primary girls’ hockey was further backed up by another stellar performance from the B team who also attended the Collier Trophy National Tournament by invitation and finished in seventh place. This is the second year in a row the B team has attended this tournament and finished in the top eight. Unfortunately the A and B teams crossed paths in the quarter final. The Girls’ Development Squad participated at the McGrath tournament due to the B team attending the national tournament and although wins were scarce, they proved to be a very competitive team. A virus affecting some players handicapped the team from realising its full potential at the tournament.

The Boys results had the Primary A team finish seventh at the Hatch Cup National Tournament, the Primary B team finish third at the McGrath tournament and the Development Squad finish second at the South Island Festival of Hockey tournament. While slightly down on the previous year’s finish, the A team played through a very tight pool and lost a very tight quarter final.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 35 Masters Representative Teams

The National Masters’ Tournament was hosted by the Manawatu Association in Palmerston North. Unfortunately their second turf was not completed in time for the tournament, which was not ideal, and teams had to travel to alternative venues in Levin and Wanganui. The Canterbury teams again performed well, with most achieving a top four finish.

National Masters’ Tournament will be hosted by the Waikato Association in Hamilton in 2009. The inaugural 35+ Men’s competition will be played at that tournament.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 39 WOMEN’S CENTENARY 1908-2008

The centenary of women’s hockey in Canterbury was marked on Saturday, August 30 2008 with two functions at Porritt Park. Firstly, a number of past and present women participants within the sport gathered in the grandstand to watch the match between the Pica Print Canterbury Cats and the Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport. The match finished 1-0 in favour of the Australians. It was interesting listening to the past players commenting over afternoon tea how much the game had changed, but more interesting were the comments that Canterbury teams of the past would have ‘run circles’ around the two teams that had just played.

That evening around 60 people, primarily women, attended the centenary dinner, also at Porritt Park. Old friends and foes reminisced about events and games of the past. Canterbury’s oldest representative and national player, Sally Burrage (Canterbury from 1936 and New Zealand from 1938), shared her experiences, so different from that of the modern player. The continuing theme throughout the celebration was the pride of playing either in or for Canterbury Women. Canterbury Women’s hockey has a proud history of fundraising for grounds, facilities, representative teams and supporting clubs and has acted as outstanding hosts for visiting teams.

The occasion was an appropriate tribute to the celebration, although more people in attendance, as is always the case with this type of function, would have been preferred. To the organising committee of Margaret Huckstep, Ann McRobb, Barbara Simmonds, Pat Barwick, Sue Duggan and Tanyia Legge, thank you for your efforts. Dot Copley must also be thanked for the significant amount of memorabilia she was able to make available for display.

Historical Note On 11 May 1908 a meeting was held to formalise the Canterbury Ladies Hockey Association and Mrs. A.E.G. Rhodes was elected the first Women’s President. The first general meeting had delegates from twenty-five clubs in attendance, ranging from Amberley-Onawe in the north to Dunsandel in the south.

The Hinemoa Club was formed in 1897 and is recognised as the oldest club in New Zealand.

Over the years, Canterbury Women’s hockey has developed strong club networks, has been at the forefront as national women’s tournament titleholders and the administrators of the association worked diligently to keep Canterbury Women’s Hockey at the top nationally. This has flowed on to players being recognised at national level and the administrators taking leading roles in the national administration over the years.

CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION [ ANNUAL REPORT [ 2008 41 TOURNAMENT HOSTING REPORT

The Canterbury Hockey Association hosted four major national/international hockey tournaments in the past financial year, starting with the men’s test series between New Zealand and South Korea in November. The three test series, played at Porritt Park, resulted in a two-one series win to Korea, who took the first two matches by scores of 1-0 and 3-2, before New Zealand took the final match 2-0. The hockey was certainly of a high standard, with both teams ranked in the top ten in the world at the time, but the spectator numbers were very disappointing. It did not help that the opportunity to host the series was a very late arrangement, only confirmed a few weeks before the Koreans arrived in New Zealand, which limited marketing to the hockey community and general public. Hockey New Zealand have indicated that crowd numbers would have to improve at the next test series to be hosted in Christchurch if the city were to be considered part of the test series hosting rotation operated by Hockey New Zealand. Thank you to the New Zealand Community Trust and the Christchurch City Council for providing funding to make this series possible.

The next two major tournaments to be hosted at Porritt Park were the National Under 21 Tournament in May and the National Under 16 Premier Girls Tournament in July. Both tournaments were delivered to a standard considered acceptable to Hockey New Zealand, although the need to provide video platforms on both fields is an issue that will need to be addressed in the future to avoid paying excessive costs in hiring suitable platforms for the week of a tournament. That both Canterbury Under 21 teams and the Canterbury Under 16 A Girls won the respective tournaments made it all the more enjoyable to host. Thank you to the Christchurch City Council for the funding support provided for the Under 16 tournament.

The final major event was the hosting of the Australian Capital Territory Academy of Sport (ACTAS) men’s and women’s teams in late August as part of the preparation for the Canterbury teams ahead of the National Hockey League. Following friendly matches between the teams midweek, the New Zealand Community Trust Hockey Series took place over the last weekend of August. This series was contested by eight teams – Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers, Pica Print Canterbury Cats, ACTAS men and women, Southern men and women and Canterbury B men and women. In total eleven matches were played, with both ACTAS teams finishing undefeated thanks to single goal victories over the Cavaliers and Cats in the respective tournaments.

In addition to these four major tournaments, other tournaments that were hosted during the year included: • South Island Super 6s (March) • South Island Under 18 & Under 16 Tournament (June - Queen’s Birthday) • Nunweek Park Secondary School Tournament (September) • South Island Primary Representative Tournament (September)

Special thanks must go to the Canterbury Hockey Supporters’ Club for providing volunteers to assist in the delivery of all of the major tournaments and to Jeanette Harper for taking on the role of Tournament Administrator at the Under 21 and Under 16 tournaments.

It was a pleasure to see Canterbury teams doing well at their National tournaments, with teams finishing well and national titles being won. It was good to see a number of players from Canterbury also making New Zealand teams.

Golf The Annual Golf Tournament proved to be another success with 80 players teeing off after a good hearty breakfast.

Golf Tournament winners were

HSOB/Burnside Team Cup Rangiora 3 (Paul McGarva, Steven Benney Graeme Benney) Thomson Cup Karl Rollinson C.H.S. Cup Dave King Bob Erikson Memorial Lois Archer Norm Palmer Salver Rodger Campbell

Raffles & Manpower Whilst raffles have been a great success it has been hard work with such a small number helping out. Without this income the Supporters Club is limited to the assistance that it can give to Canterbury Hockey. This is more social than hard work and extra helpers would be welcomed

Again it has been a great pleasure to have assisted Canterbury Hockey in providing manpower for tournaments
