For years due to the scarcity of funds and linguistic experts study of Sulawesi languages was limited to a small number of that total. In the years following Indonesia's indepcndence an increasing amount of research has been undermken on languages in Sulawesi, some by Indonesian scholars and other by scholars from Europe, Australia and the USA. With this increasing input into the field of Sulawesi studies, the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (KITLV) has now published a long planned bibliography on the languages of Sulawesi, which aims at 'presenting the main lines of the history and present state of the area of linguistics research' in Sulawesi.

The Chinese inhabitants of Batavia and the Dutch practice of segregation are considered in chapter 1, devoted to describing the plurality of Batavia’s population under the VOC. Chapter 2 traces the original concept of the kapitan system, dating back to the pre-colonial indigenous kingdoms of the archipelago. It indicates that the kapitan institution was an indigenous arrangement, later adopted by western colonists to rule the non-indigenous inhabitants of the colony. The main focus of this study is in the last five chapters. Chapter 3 examines the establishment of the kapitan Cina, or Chinese officers, its nature, structure and relationships with the local authority of Batavia.

The need for this commodity attracted the English, Dutch, Chinese and Indonesian merchants to the area* This study, therefore, is not only concerned with the development of Banjarmasin as a commercial mart but also v/ith the activities of the traders, particularly the Europeans in the region, and the response of the local rulers to their coming. Since the commercial policy of the rulers was shaped to a large extent by political forces, special attention is paid to the role of the t3ugis in local politics and an attempt is made to examine the effect of their intervention in the Civil War of the 1710*s on the pepper economy.

  • The Open Door: Early Modern Wajorese Statecraft and Diaspora
THE OPEN DOOR: EARLY MODERN WAJORESE STATECRAFT AND DIASPORA A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORY AUGUST 2003 By Kathryn Gay Anderson Dissertation Committee: Leonard Y. Andaya, Chairperson Barbara Watson Andaya David A. Chappell Jerry H. Bentley Jonathan Okamura Abstract This study focuses on the relations between Wajoq, a confederative Bugis polity in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and overseas groups ofWajorese migrants in Makassar, western Sumatra, the Straits ofMelaka and eastern Kalimantan during the century following the Makassar War (1666-1669). Itargues that these outlying communities interacted with the center in ways similar to those ofthe local constituents, and that the diaspora can therefore can be seen as part ofthe state. The ability ofthe Wajorese government to incorporate these groups rested on a long-standing mechanisms for holding its various components together and on its definition ofmembership within the state. Wajorese migrants exhibited remarkable versatility in adapting to local conditions in the areas where they settled. While each community developed along its own lines, they employed similar strategies. Foremost among these were intermarriage, diplomacy and warfare. The various communities also cooperated with each other by sharing intelligence, establishing a commercial code oflaw and providing military assistance. Such cooperation was facilitated by the Bugis concept ofpesse meaning solidarity or commiseration. Pesse was the cultural and emotional glue that bound the migrants to the homeland. It was therefore key to the maintenance oflinks between the constituents ofWajoq. Relations between Wajorese migrants and their homeland intensified in the early eighteenth century when successive rulers in Wajoq deliberately sought to harness the military and commercial potential ofthe migrant communities.
