Progress Report #1
Welcome to the first progress report for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention! We are pressing on, in times of Covid, and continuing to plan a wonderful in person convention in Montréal, Canada. We have a stunning guest list and a superlative team for both planning and the creation of the gathering not to be missed. We will be at the Hôtel Bonaventure, an iconic landmark in the city. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and just outside the Old Port of Montréal. It is near major roads, right across the street from Gare Centrale, the Montréal train station, and is directly connected to two Metro stations, making it easily accessible for both motorists and public transport users. We will be able to enjoy a lavish 2.5 acres of gardens with streams inhabited by ducks and fish as well as a year-round outdoor heated pool. Our committee is busy excitedly planning a convention that will surpass your every expectation. Our theme will be YA fantasy. The field of young adult fantasy has grown from being popular to becoming a dominant category of 21st century literature, bringing millions of new readers to hundreds of new authors. We are working on a diverse program that will explore this genre that celebrates fantasy fiction in all of its forms: epic, dark, paranormal, urban, and other varieties. We invite members to share what they enjoy, what they have learned, what they have written themselves, and what they hope to see coming in the field of young adult fantasy fiction. We look forward to seeing you all in Montréal! Diane Lacey Chair Diversity Statement The committee for the 2021 World Fantasy Convention is unconditionally devoted to promoting diversity within our convention. -
Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters & Contemporary Art
Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters & Contemporary Art A symposium presented by Nicholas Hall and Yuan Fang in conjunction with the exhibition at David Zwirner Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art Saturday Afternoon October 27, 2018 The Kitchen 512 W 19th Street, New York RSVP required for entry. Please email [email protected] or telephone +1 212-772-9100 Please arrive promptly as no one shall be seated once the presentation begins Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters and Contemporary Art is a symposium organized by Nicholas Hall and Yuan Fang, to take place on the closing day of the accompanying exhibition Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art at David Zwirner. The symposium brings into focus the legacy of Alfred H. Barr Jr.’s 1936 MoMA exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism. A key point of reference for Endless Enigma, Barr’s exhibition brought art by Dada and Surrealist artists into the context of what he called ‘fantastic art’ by European Old Masters, whose works displayed unexpected thematic and formal relationships with those of the avant- garde. It was, in fact, one of the earliest modern museum exhibitions to explore the continuous conversation between art of the past and art of the present – a dialogue that has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years across the museum and commercial art world. The half-day event will consist of presentations by curators and academics from leading European and American institutions. Divided into two sessions, the presentations will cover a diverse range of topics referencing a single work, subject or concept touched upon in Endless Enigma; the first session explores the earlier history of fantastic art, while the following session presents topics pertaining to museology and display. -
Zathura: a Space Adventure
An intergalactic world of wonder is waiting just outside your front door in Columbia Pictures' heart-racing sci-fi family film Zathura: A Space Adventure. Zathura: A Space Adventure is the story of two squabbling brothers who are propelled into deepest, darkest space while playing a mysterious game they discovered in the basement of their old house. Now, they must overcome their differences and work together to complete the game or they will be trapped in outer space forever. SYNOPSIS After their father ( Tim Robbins ) leaves for work, leaving them in the care of their older sister ( Kristen Stewart ), six year-old Danny ( Jonah Bobo ) and ten-year old Walter ( Josh Hutcherson ) either get on each other‘s nerves or are totally bored. When their bickering escalates and Walter starts chasing him, Danny hides in a dumbwaiter. But Walter surprises him, and in retaliation, lowers Danny into their dark, scary basement, where he discovers an old tattered metal board game, —Zathura.“ After trying unsuccessfully to get his brother to play the game with him, Danny starts to play on his own. From his first move, Danny realizes this is no ordinary board game. His spaceship marker moves by itself and when it lands on a space, a card is ejected, which reads: —Meteor shower, take evasive action.“ The house is immediately pummeled from above by hot, molten meteors. When Danny and Walter look up through the gaping hole in their roof, they discover, to their horror, that they have been propelled into deepest, darkest outer space. And they are not alone. -
