Welcome to HighNotes, brought to you by the Evanston Symphony for the senior members of our community who must of necessity isolate more because of COVID-!9. The current pandemic has also affected all of us here at the ESO, and we understand full well the frustration of not being able to celebrate holidays with family or make music with friends or go holiday-shopping in a real store. We certainly miss performing for our loyal audiences, especially this month when we would have had our annual festive Holiday Concert Musical Notes and Activities for Seniors at ETHS with perennial favorites like “Sleigh Ride,” ballet selections from the Evanston Symphony Orchestra from The Nutcracker, the ESO Holiday Concert Gospel Choir led by the Reverend Ken Cherry - and maybe even tap-dancing reindeer! • Incandescent: Light Bulbs and Conspiracies1
Dr Grace Halden recently completed her PhD at Birkbeck, University of London. Her doctoral research on science fiction brings together her interest in philosophy, technology and literature. She has a range of diverse VOLUME 5 NUMBER 2 SPRING 2015 publications including an edited book Concerning Evil and articles on Derrida and Doctor Who. [email protected] Article Incandescent: 1 Light Bulbs and Conspiracies Grace Halden / __________________________________________ Light bulbs are with us every day, illuminating the darkness or supplementing natural light. Light bulbs are common objects with a long history; they seem innocuous and easily terminated with the flick of a switch. The light bulb is an important invention that, as Roger Fouquet notes, was transformational with regard to industry, economy and the revolutionary ability to ‘live and work in a well-illuminated environment’.2 Wiebe Bijker, in Of Bicycles, Bakelites and Bulbs (1997), explains that light bulbs show an integration between technology and society and how these interconnected advancements have led to a sociotechnical evolution.3 However, in certain texts the light bulb has been portrayed as insidious, controlling, and dehumanising. How this everyday object has been curiously demonised will be explored here. Through looking at popular cultural conceptions of light and popular conspiracy theory, I will examine how the incandescent bulb has been portrayed in dystopian ways.4 By using the representative texts of The Light Bulb Conspiracy (2010), The X-Files (1993-2002), and Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (1973), I will explore how this commonplace object has been used to symbolise the malevolence of individuals and groups, and the very essence of technological development itself.

  • From Natural History to National Kitchen: Food in the Museums of Singapore, 20062017
From Natural History to National Kitchen: Food in the Museums of Singapore, 20062017 By: Nicole Tarulevicz and Sandra Hudd Abstract Taking museum exhibitions, publications, and restaurants as a focus, this essay explores how food is used and represented in museums in Singapore, revealing a wider story about nationalism and identity. It traces the transition of food from an element of exhibitions, to a focus of exhibitions, to its current position as an appendage to exhibition. The National Museum is a key site for national meaningmaking and we examine the colonial natural history drawings of William Farquhar in several iterations; how food shortages during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore during World War II have been used for nationbuilding; and hawker food as iconography and focus of culinary design objects. Issues of national identity within a multi ethnic society are then highlighted in the context of the National Kitchen restaurant at the National Gallery of Singapore. Key Words: Singapore, museums, hawker food, memory, nation building Introduction From Berlin’s Deutsches Currywurst Museum to Seoul’s Museum Kimchikan (formerly Kimchi Museum), food is increasingly taking center stage in museums. Food also makes regular appearances in conventional museums and galleries, be that the Julia Child exhibition at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D. C., or an exhibition on food cravings at London’s Science Museum. New Zealand’s giant kiwifruit is just one of very many giant tributes intended to attract tourists. The Southeast Asian citystate of Singapore is well known as a foodie destination and it should come as no surprise that there has been a growing interest, in the last decade, in including food and foodways as content in Singapore’s cultural institutions.
