Comparative Feminist Studies Comparative Feminist Studies Series Editor Chandra Talpade Mohanty Syracuse University Syracuse, NY, USA Comparative Feminist Studies foregrounds writing, organizing, and reflection on feminist trajectories across the historical and cultural borders of nation-states. It takes up fundamental analytic and political issues involved in the cross-cultural production of knowledge about women and feminism, examining in depth the politics of scholarship and knowledge in relation to feminist organizing and social movements. Feminist scholars who were finally making inroads in academia at greater numbers almost half a century ago gained momentum in those early years—a momentum that has produced amazing work over the decades. We were curious: What does the academic field of feminist media look like now? Our contributors offer answers to that question and we are forever grateful for their scholarship and patience. As a result of their efforts, this edited collection is a compilation of some important and interesting recent work in feminist media theory and research. As for their patience, the task of putting this project together took much longer than expected and we learned lessons that we did not anticipate, particularly in relation to the publishing process. Some of these lessons we shared with our contributors along the way as we hoped to pass on our knowledge in the spirit of feminist sisterhood. She received her doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, School of Mass Communication, and her master’s degree from the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research explores intersections between women and marginalized communities, journalism, and mass communication, with a specific interest in the new digital media environment and social media. She primarily con- siders how groups are represented in mediated discourses and ways in which they have been situated as producers of news and knowledge, par- ticularly in the digital environment. Several of her works have analyzed the intersection of female politicians and media. She is the author of Desperately Seeking Women Readers (2007). Her research appears in top mass commu- nication, gender, and media journals, including Feminist Media Studies, Communication, Culture & Critique, Media, Culture & Society, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Women’s Studies in Communication, Journal of Magazine and New Media Research, Communication & Society/ Comunicacion y Sociedad, and Journalism among others. Jaime Loke is an assistant professor in the Bob Schieffer School of Communication at Texas Christian University. Her research interests rest on the intersection of women and minorities, mass media, and the new online public spheres from a critical and cultural theoretical perspective. Her research has been published in Feminist Media Studies, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Studies,Women’s Studies in Communication, and several other top journals. Ingrid Bachmann is an associate professor in the School of Communications at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where she chairs the Journalism Department. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits.

    Gender and Sexuality in the Discourses of the Nation-State in Conflict Contexts: Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey Gender and Sexuality in the Discourses of the Nation-State in Conflict Contexts: Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey Sona Dilanyan, Burcu Doğan, Anna Iluridze Discussions of conflict, war, and violence very often make references to notions related to gender, such as “proper” womanhood and manhood, normative familial and kinship relations, sexual acts, and identities. In the context of the South Caucasus and Turkey, such discursive associations are abundant in societal and political discourses.     Critical Studies in Media Communication Vol. 21, No. 2, June 2004, pp. 140–161 Constructing the “New Ethnicities”: Media, Sexuality, and Diaspora Identity in the Lives of South Asian Immigrant Girls Meenakshi Gigi Durham This paper posits that adolescence, as experienced by girls of immigrant diaspora groups, is complicated by issues of race, culture and nation that intersect with discourses of sex and gender. In terms of globalization theory, sexuality is conceptualized as a locus of cultural hybridization; media representations of sexuality often mark the global/local nexus for diaspora peoples. In this study, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with South Asian American girls in order to analyze the role of media in their sexual identity constructions. The focus group data revealed radical rearticulations of sexual identity from an “interstitial” audience position that involved oppositional readings of various media texts. These rearticulations can be seen as part of the project of forging new ethnicities in the diaspora context. “Adolescence” and “diaspora” are terms that both invoke the metaphor of a journey: issues of border crossing, dislocations, time/space passages, and reorientation frame our understandings of both constructs. Adolescent struggles with identity can be compared with the identity questions experienced by transnational immigrants: in the liminal spaces between childhood and adulthood, or between one geopolitical state and another, the “Who am I?” question becomes imperative. The process of constructing a self that will bridge the gaps is the defining goal of these crucial life moments. Utopian Sensibility and Gender Dissidence in Contemporary Film In conversation with recent transfeminist and queer theory as well as cul- Wibke Straube tural studies, this doctoral thesis by Wibke Straube sets out to investigate the utopian potential of Trans Cinema and makes a novel contribution to the emerging research field of transgender studies. The book offers an entrance to trans films by mapping out the so-called “exit scapes” that appear in scenic moments of dancing, singing or dreaming. These provide openings for alternative ways of imagining reality, and are thus key to the experiencing of trans-affirmative futures.     IN FOCUS: Fandom and Feminism Gender and the Politics of Fan Production Introduction by KRISTINA BUSSE hen Cinema Journal asked me to provide a possible image for the cover of this issue, several came to mind. Yet trying to fi nd an accessible, representative, legal, high quality picture proved W diffi cult. In fact, my search for such an image metonymically illustrated many of the central concerns addressed in this In Focus. There are many amazing works of fan art and screenshots from fan vids (TV or fi lm clips cut to music), but most of them require at least an understanding of the source text, if not the fannish context, to be- come comprehensible. Many of these images might not strike a casual reader as feminist because the feminist impetus lies in the way women manipulate and co-opt media representations. In addition, these im- ages draw from copyrighted sources, so that most are on uncertain legal grounds, even as fans and scholars alike argue for their legality on transformative grounds.1 Finally, the greatest—and possibly most telling—obstacle in obtaining a useful cover image is that of fi nding a source with suffi ciently high resolution. Fannish art is grassroots and amateur, and predigital, third- or fourth-generation sources often pro- duce deteriorated or low-quality images. Trying to showcase fannish creations is thus complicated by the very subcultural constraints that make it worth studying in the fi rst place. “Fandom and Feminism” offers a fruitful pairing that allows us to consider the work of feminism in popular culture and the role of me- dia texts within feminism.
