Print Shop The Department of Art has a print shop, open to all students at Konstfack. Access to these printers requires training. Please contact Lars Ernholm if you have questions: [email protected]

Loan of equipment For loans of technical equipment, contact [email protected] Special information for IA Students Old IA traditions Kick-off party. The second-year Bachelor class of students organizes this for first-year students at the beginning of September and invites all IA students, teachers and other staff.

Stockholm Furniture Fair (February every year) in Älvsjö. Konstfack takes part together with other art schools. Rules for kitchen, computer lab, carpenter´s workshop etc. The following rules apply to all students at IA.

Kitchen Everyone clears tables, cleans and washes own dishes, marks clearly the food put into fridge and cupboards (unmarked food will be thrown away) and, if problems occur, contacts someone from the assigned group for kitchen order (see the announcement of the assigned kitchen group in the kitchen). The assigned kitchen group should check that seats and tables are wiped clean, the plate racks and the dish washer emptied, old or unmarked food cleared from the fridge and cupboards, the stove and the micro oven cleaned, empty drink cans returned and empty bottles thrown away, and that borrowed tableware is returned to Café Matmakarna.

Class room Do not take food there. Dissolvent, glues and strongly smelling preparations are totally forbidden. Show respect for the common area and for the space you have been given for own materials. Check with the others before putting on music. Take part in the annual, thorough cleaning and do your best for others to enjoy Konstfack.

Computer lab In the IA computer lab there are a number of PCs and Mac’s, connected via networks to a server and with a standing connection to the Internet. The lab is used for CAD, 3D modelling, visualization and the production of presentation material. Programs are among others AudoCAD, 3D Studio VIZ, FormZ, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Word etc. Other equipment to use is scanners, A1 Plotter, ink and laser printers etc.

When starting at Konstfack you are given your own e-mail address and a space to publish your projects on the Internet, on Konstfack´s web site. We are experimenting with various forms of presentation media, for example multimedia CD-ROM presentations, storage of 3D animations on video, home pages with 3D and VR objects etc.

7

Beside IA´s own computer lab, there is also a bigger central one, consisting of five rooms, two Mac labs, two PC, one SIG lab with Alias, printshop and one lab for digital video work. This is where you will be given courses in AutoCAD, 3D Studio, PhotoShop etc. When the rooms are not used for courses, they are free to use for the students´ own work.

Computer knowledge is very important. 100% of all drawings in the technical part of a project (electricity, water and sewage, construction etc) are designed with computers. On the architect side it is somewhat different. There, a lot is still drawn traditionally, especially smaller projects. In projects of interior design administrative computer programs are used for all quantity lists, product leaflets and other written information. Most of the preparation of drawings is digitalized.

The computer lab is for IA students and staff only. No food or drink is allowed. No parts of the equipment can be moved around inside or out of the lab. Do not reconnect cables. Consult the technician about problems. Some equipment can be borrowed. For information, please contact Lars Ernholm, [email protected]. Please note that no equipment may be borrowed from the lab itself. Do not install new programs, additions or fonts in the computers. Talk to the technician or guide of the project if you really need to have something new installed. If something does not work properly, please contact [email protected] directly or by phone 399. No printing can be done without payment. Show consideration for the system. Enjoy yourself, but please show consideration for others working in the lab. Always log out and close the system correctly. Keep order. Throw papers in the container for recycled paper and other things in paper baskets. Clean the workplace when you leave and do not leave anything behind. If you are the last to leave the lab, switch off the lights and check that the door locks properly behind you. Activate the alarm. Wood workshop Security The workshop´s machines can only be used by those who have had the adequate training and have been passed by the teachers responsible. Some equipment can only be used when the workshop´s responsible persons are present and can check that the work is done in a safe way. In the workshop there are blue signs with general rules and blue signs at each machine with specific rules.

Every user has a responsibility to learn and follow the rules. Three persons have to be present when machine work is done, so they can take care of an injured person and call for help at the same time. Machine protection devices must always be fully used and all rules for them followed. The rules are for protection of you and for people nearby. The general rules must be followed and equipment for personal protection used. The rules are designed with care, according to experience about how health is secured and accidents prevented in work places. Faults in the security equipment, or lack of security equipment, must immediately be reported to responsible teachers or technicians. Such faults often cause accidents.

8

Fire doors must not be left open, for fires to spread. Evacuation paths must be kept free and not blocked by any objects. When a fire breaks out, the premises may fill with smoke making it very difficult to find the way out. This is why the evacuation paths must be free and open at all times. The building is divided into fire zones and has fire doors which automatically close at fire alarm. Those doors must never be blocked or kept open with for example floor wedges.

All doors with card readers must be closed before 8.00 and after 17.00 on weekdays and during 24 hours during weekends and holidays - otherwise an alarm goes to the security company and causes costs for its’ immediate action. Locks and doors are also to save our expensive equipment from thieves. Our hand machines must be kept in the workshop´s locked tool room and when you are the last to leave, you must check this. Substances containing linseed oil must be used in a way so that self-ignition cannot occur. Self-ignition happens when this kind of oil is stored with rags or other porous materials. This is a very common cause of fire. Products based on linseed oil may only be used with the consent of workshop technicians or teachers. Work environment Devote yourself to keeping a good work environment and take part in the systematic work environment program (SAM) running at Konstfack. As a student you should actively contribute to letting work environment be a first-hand issue, so that no person runs risks of being ill or hurt in the short or long term. Only approved materials can be used on the premises. Materials or substances obtained privately must be approved by responsible teachers or technicians at the workshop before being used. Paints, glues and chemicals must be stored in special places designed by the school and not stored elsewhere.

All products used and stored must first be properly documented with product information leaflets in a special register available at the workshop. Product information leaflets can be required upon purchase or found through the Internet and will be available on the web. Harmful products containing organic dissolvent of the type aromatic carbon hydrates or for example acid-catalysed lacquer and cured plastics are forbidden for use in any of the workshop premises, as well as thinner and turpentine oil, which can quickly cause dizziness, fatigue and headache, in the longer run chronic diseases and birth defects. When treating surfaces in the painting room and spray box it is only allowed to use approved water-based paints, lacquer, varnishes and certain waxes and oil-based products.

Linseed oil based products can only be used in cooperation with a responsible technician or teacher. Ventilation and other installations at Konstfack are designed for the policy given above. It is therefore absolutely forbidden to use any other material, as this can also cause fire and explosions.

9

It is especially important that machine work is done conforming to the laws of work hours. Fatigue is a very common factor in accidents. Therefore, never work with machines when you feel tired or have not had sufficient rest.

Working with own projects in the workshop This is only possible if the work does not take space or time from own or other students’ scheduled studies. The purpose may not be financial, but mainly to keep skills within the context of training. Information about works in addition to regular course has to be communicated to the teacher.

About paint that you have bought yourself. Paint bought by the students themselves must be of an approved type and be documented in the school's chemical register. In the carpentry shop it is only permitted to use approved colors that do not contain organic solvents. Only water-based paints are approved. Paint cans must be stored in the paint room at the carpentry shop and always have an approved label.

Exterior environment According to the Swedish environmental laws, Konstfack is obligated to check that no unnecessary emissions of environmentally harmful substances and chemicals such as paints are allowed to pollute our nature. We will therefore conform to the demands from the government agencies and follow the rules by a number of means. In the painting room we have for example installed special workspace equipment where the paint is separated from water before it enters the sewer. In all work with surface treatments it is the responsibility of every user to ensure that the environmental demands are met and that the work is planned with ample time for the necessary after-treatment. As a condition for access to the equipment there will be information sessions where you will get instruction and education about its use.

Opening hours

Weekdays during scheduled periods with responsible staff: 09.00–12.00, 13.00-16.00

Work during evenings, weekends and holidays

For IA students with access: 09.00-21.30

At all other hours the electricity for machinery is off. Purchasing and ordering material IA does not have a material fee; instead all students pay for the material used. Solid wood and prefabricated board material of commonly used types can be bought directly from the workshop stocks. Payment is made at the school´s reception and should always be done in conjunction with the purchase, when we will help to calculate the cost. For less common types of massive wood or veneer you must make the purchase yourself. For board materials which are not in our ordinary stocks, the carpenter workshop can make the requisition for you if you prepay it. Purchases and requisitions are

10 made 09.00-12.00 and 13.00-16.00. We collect all requisitions and make a collective order. If you want to make a separate requisition at other times, there will be a transport cost of approximately 450 SEK.

Storage of works in progress In order to use the workshop effectively and safely everyone must be helpful and handle material and works in progress in a way so that the workshop and its benches are kept free. For this to function, the works must be kept in the storage rooms, not obstructing other people´s work or blocking valuable space. When you work continuously, for example several days in a row at a carpenter´s bench, you may let your material rest on the bench until the following day, but it should be orderly and marked with name and date. To facilitate machine work there are now 11 mobile working places (wagons), which must be parked in the storage space empty after each work period. They are not meant for storage. Storage should be put onto the shelf-compartment in the storage space. Any finished work must always be removed from the workshop.

Clean-up The floors of the workshop are vacuumed each day by the cleaning staff. We all need to remove excess material and waste from the floor and not put material or ongoing works directly on the floor.

Every user must clean the machines, saw up rest material and put it where it should be. Sawdust and other dust is removed with the central vacuum cleaner. Tools and machines must be returned to their proper places so that they are always ready for new work in the carpentry. It is completely forbidden to borrow tools from the workshop without permission from the responsible staff.

Vacuum table Vacuum table for laminating wood: Forms can be put on the table to glue veneer. This makes the work simpler than with a vacuum sack, and the plastic membrane can be seen through. The size of the table also makes it possible to do rather large gluing. There is however a limitation vertically, so you must check that the membrane is sufficient to cover the whole area without tension, otherwise there is a risk that it will crack. It is also necessary to envelope the whole veneer package in plastics so glue cannot leak out and stick to the table and membrane. Before you use the equipment the first time it is necessary that you get an instruction. Equipment may not be used until after teacher’s instructions. To new students, this also applies to gluing with vacuum sack.

Special functions The workshop contains a number of special tools and functions which are not covered in the introductory course. Individual and group instructions for them are offered in connection with other courses and project studies.

Dust collector system: The new dust/chip collector works automatically. When a machine is started, the collector also starts and the damper at the machine is opened. When you switch the machine off, the damper closes if

11 no other machine is working. When you open the lid of the cleaning outlets, the fan is also started and works as long as the lid is open. Remember to take the hose out of the cleaning outlet when you are ready or want to leave the premises, otherwise the fan will continue working. The wood shavings go into a compressing container beside the entrance of the delivery area. On the wall outside the tool store there is a lamp blinking while the collector is not functioning. Then the machines cannot be used. The environmentally responsible cleaning staff tends it and controls that it is emptied when full. While the container is being emptied, the machines cannot be used until the container is back in its place. During temporary stops in activities it is not allowed or possible to use the machines. Locks and log-in All machines are connected to a card reader, which switches on the electricity at log-in. Students certified to run the machines at IA can log in but there must be two persons, who directly, one after the other, do the log-in. This is to diminish the risk that someone works alone with the machines. In addition, the rule is that there must be three persons present while working with the machines. The machine current stays on during 90 minutes after log-in. Before the current turns off there is an automatic signal sounding and a lamp blinking. As long as you are logged-in you are responsible for the workshop. If you want to leave before the end of the 90 minutes, you must first log out. You do it by pressing the current switch close to the card reader. Those certified will have access to the entry door, the storage space for on-going works and the tool storage.

Purchases of material Material to be used in the IA education is exempt from VAT (moms). For other material VAT has to be paid. Purchases can only be made after permission from head of department/professors/teachers. You may not invoice Konstfack for private purchases and for things you intend to sell. You can use Konstfack´s delivery address but never as invoice address, so please use your home address. No orders for delivery to Konstfack can be made without a requisition number from the finance administrator.

Construction of exhibitions Orders for material, delivery of design drawings and registration of these should be made three weeks before the exhibition’s starting date, two weeks in the case of smaller exhibitions or presentations. If there is no exhibition budget, students must pay for the material. Students must build podiums etc. themselves, with assistance from technicians of the department.

Sponsoring The possibilities to engage sponsors are a way to get external or additional resources for school projects. At the annual furniture fair and Konstfack´s spring exhibition some students are usually given the responsibility to seek sponsors from a contact list. Sponsors´ donations are valuable contributions which have helped the department a lot over the years. Many also use the possibility to seek sponsors for their own school projects and this way

12 secure valuable contacts. However, remember that you are calling from Konstfack and emphasize that it is Konstfack that is being sponsored. Keep up a good relation with the company, demonstrate your results and express gratitude for the sponsoring. Excess material from sponsored projects is the property of Konstfack and can be used for common purposes.

Spring term cleaning Two-three weeks before the end of the spring semester, all students must clean up and store or take home their belongings. Larger objects to be thrown away must be put in a container or waste bin. You may store things in your black chest of drawers and on top of your desk. The desks must be cleaned before you put material on top. Material must not be put in heaps which may fall down when desks are moved. Mark all objects, including the chest of drawers, with paper slips clearly showing year, name and number. All things are left at your own risk. The department is not responsible for thefts or other losses. All first-year students must take away all from their classroom as it must be free for the entrance of new first-year students. All graduating students must also take away all when they leave Konstfack.

All parts of the wood workshop must be cleared from student works and private objects. This applies also to the storage of works-in-progress during terms. You must therefore – in good time before the end of the semester – take out your belongings. Exceptions from this rule must be agreed well before the end of semester.

Personal obligation forms required for access to the IA workshops are to be signed by all new students and handed to Inger Bengtsson.

Material Library The material Library is situated next to the classroom. Responsible teacher is Sergio Montero Bravo.

Lockers Lockers are available below “Entresol” (mezzanine). Each student can borrow a locker at the start of the semester and lock with your own lock during the study period. Do not store any valuables in the lockers as thefts unfortunately occur.

Lunch Each programme has a student kitchen for cooking your own food. Students can eat subsidized lunch at Konstfack’s restaurant when buying a booklet of 10 luncheon vouchers. Schedule The Education Administrator publishes current schedules on the Intranet under "My education". Late schedule changes can be e-mailed. Presence Studies at Konstfack are full-time. Scheduled teaching is mandatory. Student representation Each grade elects at the beginning of the school year a class representative, who acts as the contact person for teachers and other staff. 13

Parties There is a separate party room in the ground floor at the back of Konstfack that can be booked at the reception. Permission from the Student Union and signature of teacher is required. The form is available at the reception. Internal celebrations at the department may take place in the student kitchen. Apply to the head of department.

Alcohol and smoking At Konstfack smoking is completely forbidden. Alcohol may only be consumed at authorized parties and after passing the completed application.

Spring Party In connection with the academic year, Konstfack organizes a joint party for students and staff where students in each subject area arrange food according to these routines 1) Teacher Assistant contacts the class representatives 2) class representatives meet to go through the budget, which will cover food, dessert and table setting for all, including staff. Then they collect the appropriate amount from each participant, for example 120 SEK. 3) Year K1 arranges the food, year K2 is responsible for setting and decorations while year M1 arranges dessert. After eating, everyone helps clear the table and throw garbage. Work Environment + risk assessment Work environment includes both premises and psychosocial environment. Everyone at the school is responsible for creating a good working environment. The Head of department has the overall responsibility for work environment.

Pregnant students If you become pregnant while studying at Konstfack, a specific risk assessment needs to be done, especially considering all the chemicals used in our courses. Please contact the Head of department. Summer closing at Konstfack The spring semester ends 4 June 2017. Then students no longer have valid insurance and are not allowed at school. 4 June all workshops and student halls closes and re-open 28 August. Cleaning Konstfack employs cleaning staff, but everyone needs to pull together to keep clean and take care of their garbage. Cleaning utensils are available to borrow from the cleaners if needed. Sometimes the floors are machine cleaned. Students will then be asked to pick up everything from the floor so that the cleaning machines can get past between tables. A joint cleaning for all students is done before Christmas and at the end of the school year. At the end of the spring semester, all students’ rooms are emptied. Student work and materials are removed to allow cleaning, repair and preparing workplaces for the autumn. All students must take care of their things at a joint clearing. Things left behind after the end of the term are discarded.
