    R. Feener A re-examination of the place of al-Hallaj in the development of Southeast Asian Islam In: Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 154 (1998), no: 4, Leiden, 571-592 This PDF-file was downloaded from http://www.kitlv-journals.nl Downloaded from Brill.com09/30/2021 12:59:33AM via free access R. MICHAEL FEENER A Re-Examination of the Place of al-Hallaj in the Development of Southeast Asian Islam For decades, the academic study of Islam in Southeast Asia has been domin- ated by a preoccupation with the role of mysticism in the region. From the earliest descriptions in Raffles' History of Java of 1817 to the anthropological writings of Clifford Geertz (Geertz I960, 1968), the mystical orientation of Southeast Asian Islam has been assumed a priori. Such an orientation has dominated the contents of several Leiden dissertations, and eventually led to Professor Johns' thesis concerning the role of Sufi turuq in the Islamization of the region.1 While there is no denying that some schools of Islamic mystic thought have been influential in the development of Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia, it seems inadvisable to continue taking the 'mystical' nature of Islam in the region as a given. Rather, we should refrain from letting the nebulous term 'Sufism' bias us in our investigations of the actual situation in both its historical and contemporary contexts. It was just such a predisposition to find the 'mystical' in Southeast Asian Islam that was evident in the Dutch publications cited by Massignon in his Passion.2 Going by indications in this handful of studies, Massignon came to imagine a much more prominent role of 'Sufism', and of Hallajian elements therein, than it may have actually played.

  • Winger, Anna, Creator. Unorthodox. Real Film Berlin and Studio Airlift, 2020
Film Review Winger, Anna, creator. Unorthodox. Real Film Berlin and Studio Airlift, 2020. Reviewed by Batya Weinbaum, American Public University, Charles Town WV, USA Esty Shapiro: A Protagonist Who Refuses to Go Home The critic Pauline Kael was renowned for including the audience in her reviews when she covered films for the New Yorker. Unorthodox, a limited series of four episodes on Netflix loosely based on a memoir of a woman who left the Satmar community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, directed by actor-filmmaker Maria Schrader, cannot be written up by any discerning critic of today without noting the audience reaction as well. Indeed, the reaction has been so strong to the mini-series that aired March 26, 2020, that the audience response needs to be dealt with first. The Satmar community has claimed its representation made by a film crew in Germany is inaccurate. Yet many women, triggered by what they saw in the show, said on social media speaking out against their own community that the representation writes large what happened to them in private. This was the topic explored on the podcast Intimate Judaism, on Sunday, April 26 2020, in which the hosts aired a live international Zoom panel discussion on intimacy and authenticity in the series. Mental health workers, a sex therapist and a sexual violence advisor, one of whom runs seminars for sexual relations counselors for brides and grooms in Hasidic culture, discussed how the series approximated what they had heard from clients themselves, even if the end of how the woman escaped the sexual oppression and made it with a hot German guy after being institutionally raped by her community was unrealistic.

TELEVISION CANADA WORLD BUSINESS INVESTING OPINION POLITICS SPORTS LIFE ARTS DRIVE OPINION The top 10 television series of 2020, a year when TV was a sanctuary and escape JOHN DOYLE TELEVISION CRITIC PUBLISHED 1 DAY AGO FOR SUBSCRIBERS 63 COMMENTS SHARE TEXT SIZE BOOKMARK Plan your screen time with the weekly What to Watch newsletter, with film, TV and streaming reviews and more. Sign up today. In this, the weirdest year we have lived through, television saved us. A sanctuary of escapism, it was also the lifeboat, the saviour of sanity and a reminder that there’s normal life, filled with joy, companionship, touching, talking unmasked, travelling to places and feeling safe. Where people went with their TV viewing makes a top-10 list slightly dubious. One person’s safe escape was another person’s masterpiece. People watched more TV than ever as the pandemic shut down everything. What they found, often, was storytelling of the highest calibre. And art – this was also a year of confident experimentation. Binge-watching guide: The recent shows you need to catch up on, all available to stream Two HBO shows dabbled in unreliable narration, in I May Destroy You, with its jangled, nerve-wracking reconstruction of a sexual assault, and The Third Day, with its unique structure, featuring separate characters experiencing the same mental dislocation, and a live, one-off episode. These were praiseworthy and unsettling, but some of the year’s finest content was comforting, even as it challenged. Such was the second season of Ricky Gervais’s beautifully modulated After Life on Netflix.

  • Unorthodox: the Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman
Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman Traces the author's upbringing in the Hasidic community of Satmar in Brooklyn's Williamsburg, describing the strict rules that governed every aspect of her life, denial of a traditional education and arranged marriage at seventeen to a stranger before the birth of her son led to her plan to escape her cloistered world. See also: Exodus: A Memoir (2014) in which Feldman has embarked on a triumphant journey of self-discovery, a journey in which she begins life anew as a single mother, an independent woman, and a religious refugee. The Netflix series Unorthodox (2020), a TV drama about a Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn who flees to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians, until her past comes calling; inspired by Deborah Feldman’s memoir. FURTHER READING: The Pious Ones: The World of Hasidim and Their Battles with America by Joseph Berger (182) A New York Times journalist and author takes readers inside the notoriously insular world of the Hasidim to explore their origins, beliefs, and struggles--and the social and political implications of their expanding presence in America. Becoming un-Orthodox: Stories of ex-Hasidic Jews by Lynn Davidman (300.10) Based on her in-depth conversations with over forty male and female Haredi “defectors,” Lynn Davidman, the Beren Distinguished Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at the University of Kansas, explores what prompts some ultra-Orthodox Jews to abandon their insulated lives and shed their distinctive clothes and behaviors to enter the secular world.
