The podcasts of the same name are audio documentaries on similarly compelling subjects. Recent podcasts have looked at the man behind the Bikram Yoga fitness craze, racial activism by professional athletes, the origins of the hugely profitable Ultimate Fighting Championship, and the lasting legacy of the John Madden Football video game. Brings real life and sports together in a fantastic way.” 99% Invisible From the podcast website: “Ever wonder how inflatable men came to be regular fixtures at used car lots? Curious about the origin of the fortune cookie? Want to know why Sigmund Freud opted for a couch over an armchair? 99% Invisible is about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world.” Recommended by Scott ABCA Calls from the Clubhouse Interviews with coaches in the American Baseball Coaches Association Recommended by Donnie, who is head coach of varsity baseball and says the podcast covers “all aspects of baseball, culture, techniques, practices, strategy, etc. -
Teacher Notes
Media Series - TV Teacher Notes Television in the Global Age Teachers’ Notes The resources are intended to support teachers delivering on the new AS and A level specifications. They have been created based on the assumption that many teachers will already have some experience of teaching Media Studies and therefore have been pitched at a level which takes this into consideration. Other resources are readily available which outline e.g. technical and visual codes and how to apply these. There is overlap between the different areas of the theoretical framework and the various contexts, and a “text-out” teaching structure may offer opportunities for a more holistic approach. Slides are adaptable to use with your students. Explanatory notes for teachers/suggestions for teaching are in the Teachers’ Notes. The resources are intended to offer guidance only and are by no means exhaustive. It is expected that teachers will subsequently research and use their own materials and teaching strategies within their delivery. Television as an industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Digital technologies and other external factors have led to changes in production, distribution, the increasingly global nature of television and the ways in which audiences consume texts. It is expected that students will require teacher-led delivery which outlines these changes, but the focus of delivery will differ dependent on texts chosen. THE JINX: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst Episode Suggestions Episode 1 ‘The Body in the Bay’ is the ‘set’ text but you may also want to look at others, particularly Episode 6 with its “shocking” conclusion. -

This Generation a Shifter Will Arise, Hidden Amongst the Lost and Lies
“This generation a Shifter will arise, Hidden amongst the lost and lies. A great many will see The life that could be. The universe will shake; The greatest among us will quake. The towers will fall. The ruled will rule all.” Douglas and Angelia Pershing Prologue Rian growled when a small group of Shifters entered The Council chamber following Navin and Lena. Lena sauntered in, her hips swaying dangerously from side to side. Other than Rian, all eyes in the room were on her. Her long auburn hair was undulating behind her in a tight ponytail. Her green eyes were bright and cold. Her smirk revealed straight white teeth, poised and ready for the kill. “My Lord,” Lena said in her throaty alto. She bowed then, carefully positioning her body in the most flattering way. The new Seer on The Council, a small mousy man with flat brown eyes and little ability to see anything, gulped audibly as he watched Lena. “I am not a feudal lord,” Rian snapped at Lena. “Of course not,” Lena said, rising slowly, allowing the eyes in the room to linger on her lithe body. “You are my god.” Rian’s eyes flicked to her, somehow his copper eyes were both irritated and pleased. He then returned them to the piece of Shifter trash that had entered the room with her. His copper eyes flashed red for a brief moment, appearing more vibrant and cruel than any eyes before. “Navin,” he growled. It was almost as though when Rian ordered the deaths of the Shifter Young nearly 1 thirteen years ago, he had become less than human. -

Sport, Representation and Culture in the Modern World, 1920-2020
8. Representation Steven A. Riess Cultural historians study the change of human civilization over time. They focus on people’s beliefs, rituals, ideas, identity, social norms, institutions, and materials, with particular attention to the meanings of that culture’s elements (Hutton 1981). Cultural historians before World War II focused on high culture, but thereafter, because of the influence of cultural anthropology, they began to study popular culture, that include every day experiences and artifacts that express mass values and attitudes. Since the late 1960s, scholars have studied sport’s interaction with high and low culture, and also sport as an independent element of culture with s symbolic acts, representation, and struggle over meaning of sport’s myths and realities. American cultural historians have relied heavily on anthropologist Clifford Geertz’s concept of “thick description,” a process of studying and contextualizing human behavior. This was modeled by his analysis of the cultural significance of Balinese cock fighting which he called “deep play, ” that illuminated the network of social relationships in that traditional society (Geertz 1973). This process encouraged historians to study the sporting world and individual sports as cultural texts. A new trend that soon followed was an emphasis on memory as a cultural historical category, followed by the “linguistic turn” in the 1980s that emphasized the importance of language, a perspective in far greater vogue in Europe than the US. Cultural scholars outside North America are far more reliant on theory, particularly the polyschematic analyses of Michel Foucault, along with advocates of the visual and audio turns. Culturally minded sport historians employ cultural analysis as a window through which to understand the broader society. -

Refusing to accept the inherent lack of suspense in his work, Capote builds the tension with the brilliant use of imagery and detailed exploration of the characters. -

Danny the Champion of the World
Roald Dahl Danny the Champion of the World 1 The Filling-station When I was four months old, my mother died suddenly and my father was left to look after me all by himself. This is how I looked at the time. I had no brothers or sisters. So all through my boyhood, from the age of four months onward, there were just the two of us, my father and me. We lived in an old gipsy caravan behind a filling-station. My father owned the filling-station and the caravan and a small field behind, but that was about all he owned in the world. It was a very small filling-station on a small country road surrounded by fields and woody hills. While I was still a baby, my father washed me and fed me and changed my nappies and did all the millions of other things a mother normally does for her child. That is not an easy task for a man, especially when he has to earn his living at the same time by repairing motor-car engines and serving customers with petrol. But my father didn’t seem to mind. I think that all the love he had felt for my mother when she was alive he now lavished upon me. During my early years, I never had a moment’s unhappiness or illness and here I am on my fifth birthday. I was now a scruffy little boy as you can see, with grease and oil all over me, but that was because I spent all day in the workshop helping my father with the cars. -

Spooked by slumping revenues and the ghost of its ousted leader Bill Simmons, the multimedia giant axed the sports and pop culture website that helped usher in a new era of digital media. The website, named for sports writing godfather Grantland Rice, channeled the prestige of a bygone era while crystallizing the nature of its own time. Grantland’s writers infused their pieces with spry commentary, unabashed passion and droll humor. Most importantly, they knew what they were writing about. From its birth in June 2011, Grantland quickly became a hub for educated sports consumption. Grantland’s pieces entertained and edified. Often vaulting over 1,000 words, they also skewed toward a more affluent and more educated audience. The internet promoted shifts and schisms by its very nature. Popular with millennials, Grantland filled a certain niche.
