United Expanding IFE Offering United expanding IFE offering By Rick Lundstrom on August, 20 2015 | Inflight Entertainment United Airlines is expanding its United Private Screening in-flight entertainment selection with the launch of free personal device entertainment on two-cabin United Express regional jets Some of the improvements will be expanded HBO programming; and exclusively curated content from Vevo, the music video and entertainment platform. United currently offers free streaming entertainment on more than 200 aircraft with television shows and movies available for streaming directly to travelers' laptop computers and iOS and Android mobile devices. Passengers on flights with personal device entertainment may enjoy popular films like Birdman, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the Taken trilogy, as well as child-friendly favorites such as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and The LEGO Movie. Popular television shows are also available and may include HBO's Veep and The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, Mad Men, Orange is the New Black and other hit shows. Available HBO entertainment includes full seasons of popular television shows such as Entourage, Game of Thrones and True Detective. "Whether they travel for business or pleasure, we're designing United Private Screening to ensure our customers have access to content that is entertaining, interesting, wide-ranging and relaxing," said Scott Wilson, United's vice president of merchandising and eCommerce in last week's announcment. "Our ongoing expansion of personal device entertainment and the additional HBO and Vevo content provide our customers more in-flight entertainment choices than ever before." United has begun rolling out personal device entertainment on its fleet of more than 120 Wi-Fi equipped E170, E175 and CRJ700 regional jets, with more than half of the aircraft now offering free streaming entertainment. The airline plans to offer the service on all Wi-Fi-equipped regional jets by the end of this week. The launch of personal device entertainment on regional jets follows United's introduction this year of an all-new Premium-cabin experience on United Express, featuring freshly prepared meals served on chinaware on regional jet flights of at least 800 miles. Meanwhile, United is in its second year as the official airline of the Tribeca Film Festival. Flights with live television seatback on-demand entertainment and personal device entertainment offer unique in- flight content curated by Tribeca, including independent feature narratives and documentaries as well as short films. This summer, United also launched a pilot program offering tablets for rent on 777 flights between the continental United States and Honolulu and between Honolulu and Guam. The 8.4-inch tablets contain stored entertainment, including television shows, movies and games. United aircraft offer several in-flight entertainment options, with Wi-Fi also available on 85 percent of mainline aircraft and regional jets receiving the technology. In addition: United plans to install 1 Copyright DutyFree Magazine. Media Series - TV Teacher Notes Television in the Global Age Teachers’ Notes The resources are intended to support teachers delivering on the new AS and A level specifications. They have been created based on the assumption that many teachers will already have some experience of teaching Media Studies and therefore have been pitched at a level which takes this into consideration. Other resources are readily available which outline e.g. technical and visual codes and how to apply these. There is overlap between the different areas of the theoretical framework and the various contexts, and a “text-out” teaching structure may offer opportunities for a more holistic approach. Slides are adaptable to use with your students. Explanatory notes for teachers/suggestions for teaching are in the Teachers’ Notes. The resources are intended to offer guidance only and are by no means exhaustive. It is expected that teachers will subsequently research and use their own materials and teaching strategies within their delivery. Television as an industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Digital technologies and other external factors have led to changes in production, distribution, the increasingly global nature of television and the ways in which audiences consume texts. It is expected that students will require teacher-led delivery which outlines these changes, but the focus of delivery will differ dependent on texts chosen. THE JINX: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst Episode Suggestions Episode 1 ‘The Body in the Bay’ is the ‘set’ text but you may also want to look at others, particularly Episode 6 with its “shocking” conclusion.

True Crime as a Literature of Advocacy Leslie Rowen Spring 2017 Directed by Dr. Jon Blandford Rowen 1 Acknowledgements At the beginning of my research, I was excited and overwhelmed by where this work might take me. I was also scared I wouldn’t be able to complete this successfully. Thankfully, those worries did not come to fruition, and throughout this past year I have learned of the type of work I’m capable—though this could not have been possible without the incredible support system provided by Bellarmine University. My thesis director, Dr. Jon Blandford, was particularly instrumental in the completion of this honors thesis. His genuine passion for this research and belief in my academic abilities established in me a drive to work harder and write better every week. The amount of time and effort he put into draft revisions, brainstorming, and championing this work made this experience incredibly rewarding.

  • Guilty Pleasure: a Case Study of True Crime's Resurgence in a Binge
A Case Study of True Crime’s Resurgence in a Binge Consumption Era by Rachel Tinker — 95 Guilty Pleasure: A Case Study of True Crime’s Resurgence in a Binge Consumption Era Rachel Tinker Strategic Communications Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract While the fascination of the true crime genre can be traced to the 16th century, it has grown in widespread popularity in the last three years. This study explored potential causes for why the genre has become popular through a narrative rhetorical analysis of three popular pieces of true crime media – season one of the podcast Serial, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, and Making a Murderer. The study found that the true crime genre has grown due to a variety of circumstances, largely because of the resurgence of the binge-consumption era, which allows the audience to get more instant gratification for the program’s cliffhangers. It can also be deduced that true crime shows with certain rhetorical consistencies are more likely to take off in today’s media landscape. I. Introduction Humans’ bloody fascination with crime and murder has been linked to primitive needs for safety and security, in addition to the desire for certainty and justice.1 Within the last three years, the “true crime” genre has experienced a cultural revolution of sorts, and can be found across a variety of media platforms, from Netflix and HBO to podcasts and magazines. True crime, as it is referred to throughout the remainder of this paper, is broadly defined by Oxford Dictionary as “a genre of writing, film, etc., in which real crimes are examined or portrayed.”2 What used to be relegated to a specific corner of media is now stretching into the likes of CBS and NBC; as cable channels like the Oxygen Network focus solely on true crime, it gains additional coverage.
