Dr. Marc Walker Dr. Mark Walker is a healthcare executive and is the current Chairman and Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of and the Ottawa Hospital. He has published more than 210 peer reviewed articles and been awarded more than $10 million dollars as Principal Investigator in research. As well as being a highly respected clinician and researcher, Dr Walker has a Master in Health Care Management from Harvard University.

His leadership roles include the previous Chairman of the Society of Investigators in Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, the Chair of the Perinatal Health Committee of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the Co-Chair of the Maternal Newborn Advisory Committee for the Province of . He is currently a Senior Scientist and the Scientific Director of the Better Outcomes Registry Network (BORN) as well as a board member of the Provincial Council for Maternal Child Health. Dr. Walker is internationally recognized for his research, medical leadership as well as health services and policy work.

Dr. Josephine Etowa Dr. Josephine Etowa is a Full Professor and Loyer DaSilva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing, in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa. Her academic credentials include a BScN and MN from Dalhousie University, PhD in Nursing from University of Calgary and Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Toronto and University of Ottawa.

As an internationally educated community health nurse and midwife, she has worked in various capacities within the Canadian health care system and abroad over the past 30 years. Her research program is in the area of nurses’ worklife issues, HIV/AIDS, maternal-child and public health nursing with studies that address inequity in health and health care and emphasis on the health care of visible minority women and nurses. Here research program is grounded in meaningful community engagement using community based participatory approach

Over the past last decade, Prof. Etowa has generously volunteered her time to serve the community. She is a co-founder and past president of the Health Association of African . She currently serves on the Board of Directors of National Collaborating Centre for the Determinants of Health (NCCDH), and the Board of Directors of ACCHO (African Caribbean Council of HIV in Ontario). She is an active member of the Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC). Prof Etowa has and continues to be instrumental in bringing issues of racism and health inequities within the Canadian contexts to the forefront in local, national and international arenas. In 2009, she co-authored a book on antiracism health practice which is frequently cited in nursing course syllabi. And in 2014 she collaborated with the Champlain Region Local Integrated Health Network to develop a Health Equity manual for health service providers.

------Dr. Ardene Robinson Vollman

Dr. Ardene Robinson Vollman is a graduate of the Universities of Saskatchewan (BScN, 1978) and Ottawa (MA, 1985; PhD, 1990) is an Adjunct Associate Professor, University of Calgary, in the Cumming School of Medicine (Department of Community Health Sciences), interim Scientific Director of the Primary Health Care Strategic Clinical Network for Alberta Health Services, a consultant in health and evaluation, and Chair of the Canadian Public Health Association. Her nursing career has spanned more than 3 decades from nursing stations in the North, to critical care in a tertiary care centre, to public health nursing administration in a rural setting and to academia. Her research interests are varied, but generally focus on health promotion, evaluation, and vulnerable populations. She is editor and author of Canadian Community as Partner, now being revised for its 4th edition, and lead academic partner on a Public Health Agency of Canada funded project “Leadership Competencies for Public Health Practice in Canada”.

Dr. Denise Harrison:

Denise Harrison is the Chair in Nursing Care of Children, Youth and their Families at the University of Ottawa and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Her program of research titled “Be Sweet to Babies” is focussed on improving pain management for sick and healthy infants and young children. Her research encompasses knowledge creation, synthesis, dissemination and translation. Her latest studies evaluate the effectiveness of using social media to disseminate research knowledge. She is studying the impact of a parent-targeted YouTube video aimed to help parents advocate for using effective pain treatment for their infants during blood sampling and vaccinations. The newborn pain video is now in eight languages and is currently being trialed as a parent-targeted KT intervention in Canada and Brazil. A new version of the vaccination video is being produced to coincide with the new World Health Organization infant vaccination pain guidelines.

Dr. Wendy Peterson Dr. Wendy Peterson is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. Wendy’s program of research aims to improve the quality and experience of maternal-newborn health services for marginalized women by addressing disparities in access to health services, facilitating woman-centered humanistic birth, and exploring the role of registered nurses in inter- professional primary maternity care teams. Wendy has held principal and co-investigator roles in studies funded by local, provincial and federal agencies.

Wendy’s clinical background includes working in high risk obstetrics and neonatal intensive care. After graduating with her PhD (Nursing) from McMaster University, Wendy completed a postdoctoral fellowship co-supervised by Dr. Nancy Edwards and Dr. Barbara Davies at the University of Ottawa. Wendy is currently the Assistant Director, Graduate Programs at the School of Nursing. She teaches in the undergraduate graduate programs.

Dr. Sylvia Reitmanova Sylvia Reitmanova has earned a medical degree at Comenius University in Slovakia followed by a Master’s and a doctorate in community health at Memorial University in Newfoundland. Currently, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in social work at Carleton University while working as an academic liaison officer with the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau.

Sylvia’s research focuses on health and social equity. She has conducted critical public health research in the area of reproductive health, mental health, tuberculosis, access to insured services as well as the provision of culturally safe healthcare services and health professions education. She published her research in quality journals, such as Lancet Infectious Diseases. The merit of her research was recognized by several prestigious awards, including CIHR IHSPR Rising Star Award and SSHRC Doctoral Award.

During her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Ottawa, Sylvia examined how the reproductive services respond to the needs of service users from minority groups, including immigrant women, Aboriginal women, women with disabilities, as well as persons from LGBT

communities. She will speak about her work on diversity and inclusiveness of reproductive health services today.

Dr. Robin Taylor, Dr. Robin Taylor received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Her love of chemistry then took her to Vancouver for graduate work at the University of British Columbia. Her PhD in Ethnobotany explored the traditional use of medicinal plants to treat infections in Nepal. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell

University in Ithaca, New York, Robin accepted a faculty position at Hollins University – a small liberal arts university in Roanoke, Virginia. She continued her research into the uses of plants as medicines in Nepal, and extended her partnerships with the local Tribhuvan University and the Cornell University Abroad program to include supervision of graduate students, founding of a collaborative laboratory, and teaching.

During her work in Nepal, Robin was exposed to the power of basic public health interventions, and was inspired to change fields. She completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Calgary, and split her Public Health and Preventive Medicine residency training between McGill University, where she earned a Masters in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Queen’s University. After residency, Robin served for four years as a regional Medical Officer of Health in Nova Scotia. As Associate Medical Officer of Health at Ottawa Public Health, Robin provides Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist expertise and has a specific interest in maternal-child health. When she has settled into her office at Ottawa Public Health, the walls will

display other passions in her life, including the artwork of her five-year-old son and photos from her travels.

Ms. Eno Akan-Essien Eno Akan-Essien is the Community Development Coordinator at the AIDS Committee of Ottawa. Through prevention programming, she engages service providers with a view to reducing HIV transmission and enhancing community capacity; particularly among women. She engages with staff at community organizations and groups to build their knowledge and capacity to respond to women’s unique HIV prevention needs. Eno has experience in community-based research through working with le Ministère de la Santé du Gabon, ONG Les enfants du Soleil, la République du Congo and was also involved with their public health initiatives and community development programs.

She has been in the field of HIV\AIDS since 1999 as a volunteer, advocate and educator. During that time, she provided services for orphans, vulnerable children, women and families. With a primary focus on women, Eno believes that empowerment and access to information are the best prevention tools.

Maureen A. McTeer Maureen McTeer is a Canadian lawyer and author, and an adjunct professor of law, science and public policy at the University of Ottawa. Ms. McTeer is a graduate of the University of Ottawa, (BA, LLB), Dalhousie University (LLM in Health law), and the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom (MA in Biotechnological Law and Ethics). She has authored four books and has lectured extensively in Canada and the U.S. on issues of law, science and public policy, including especially on matters of women’s health & equality. Ms. McTeer has been awarded both the Governor General’s award in commemoration of the Persons case and the DIVA Award for outstanding contributions to women’s health and wellbeing in recognition of her continued commitment to issues of equality. She has met and worked with many community groups in Canada and abroad, and over the years, has visited development projects in some 30 countries.

In addition to her writing, teaching and advocacy work, she has been the lay member of the Canada-China Child Health Foundation, the National Council of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (2008-2011); the Accreditation Committee for Canadian Medical Schools, and until 2015, was the Canadian representative to the international White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, where she advocated for the achievement of the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals, especially MDG 5 on maternal health.

Among her other volunteer efforts, Ms. McTeer has served as the national Patron of the then Canadian Osteoporosis Society; as a member of Canada’s Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies; and as the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre in Ottawa.

Dr. Nancy Edwards Nancy Edwards is a Distinguished Professor, University of Ottawa, and Full Professor in the School of Nursing. She was appointed Scientific Director, Institute of Population and Public Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research in July, 2008 and Director of the Interdisciplinary Population Health PhD Program at the University of Ottawa on July 1, 2015. Dr. Edwards obtained her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Windsor and completed graduate studies in epidemiology at McMaster University and McGill University. She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has been awarded two honorary doctorate degrees.

Dr. Edwards’ clinical and research interests are in the fields of public and population health. She has conducted health services, policy and clinical research both nationally and internationally. Her research has informed the design and evaluation of complex multi-level and multi-strategy community health programs. Her work in global health has spanned four continents where she has led both development-oriented and research-focused projects.

Dr. Edwards has contributed to over 200 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, and 125 technical publications. She has presented over 400 conference papers. She has served on numerous advisory committees. Recent examples include the international expert advisory committee for Public Health Research in Horizon 2020 (EU Commission); the advisory council for the Canadian Population Health Initiative; and a joint technical task group of the National Research Council that is reviewing building code recommendations for ramps, stairs, handrails and guards.

Joe Irvine, MSc. MBA Joe Irvine started his career in academic research in molecular biology and medical genetics before becoming interested in technology commercialization. After helping launch two firms during his MBA, Joe became a business development officer at the University of Guelph. Subsequently he served in business development and research management roles at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Since 2005, Joe has served as Director, Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise (TTBE) at the University of Ottawa, where he has overseen the growth of Research Partnerships, Technology Partnerships and entrepreneurship support activities, including the launch of over sixty new firms. In 2010 TTBE launched the Start-up Garage program for student entrepreneurs and community-based mentors.

Joe has served on the boards of several research spin-out firms as well as the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation, Invest Ottawa, and professional technology transfer associations. Joe received the 2014 AUTM Award for Outstanding Service to the Canadian Technology Transfer Community.
