MEDIA RELEASE May 23, 1988
UM JOURNALISM SCHOOL REACCREDITED MISSOULA — The University of Montana School of Journalism has been
granted full reaccreditation by the national accrediting
organization for journalism education.
Charles Hood, dean of the UM journalism school, said the
decision was made unanimously by the Accrediting Council for
Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at its meeting in
Chicago May 7. Hood said that John Lavine, president of the accrediting
council, praised the UM journalism school for its successful
efforts in meeting the accrediting standards during unusually
difficult economic times.
The UM journalism program had been given provisional
accreditation last year pending action by the school in several
areas, most of them related to inadequate funding.
In his progress report to the council, Hood cited additional
financial support from the UM administration, donations of
equipment to the school by the journalism profession, off-campus
fund-raising efforts and success in the development of new
funding sources for the support of faculty development
and travel.

The UM program also was recently evaluated by the Allied
Daily Newspapers, which awarded it $15,000 last week in recognition of excellence in the training of newspaper journalists. ###
