Context Facility definition : - Sharing public data & open access A common term to gather Re-usability observatory, spacecraft, - Multi-wavelength science space mission and Metadata - keep track of observational data instruments. - Interoperability between services VO protocols to query archives

Scientific needs regarding astronomical data suggest a common vocabulary & some description to refer to facilities

I. Existing initiatives – agencies : NASA

Most agencies maintain & provide http://www.nasa.gov/missions names & identifiers for their facilities but in an uncoordinated manner.

Unique codes resolving synonyms & diverse Voyager 2 strategies to expose the instrument descriptions NSSDCA/COSPAR ID: 1977-076A

ESO facilities tracked from papers. To identify datasets, a naming convention for facilities has been used

II. CDS use cases – photometry origins

Photometry viewer : exploitation of data from source catalogs. Filter information is associated to each measurements. METAfilter

List of filters (>2500 for now) from diverse sources maintained by astronomers, engineers & documentalists

Need of telescope/instruments for observation origins for : - HiPS metadata description

- Nomenclature of astronomical objects (i.e. Catalina survey)

- VizieR catalog descriptions - Associated data

Mihaela BUGA Internal list of 75 telescopes/ instruments and missions. Need to check wavelengths & resolution of instruments for

Problem : Format not reusable

III. The first attempt at IVOA

The VO facility metadata profile describes: - Observatories, telescopes, instruments... as VO resource facilities - Unique identifiers - Link to instrument descriptions on agency Louys, webpages Cecconi et al. ADASS XXV

Some problems solved : - ambiguous names - alternative names - various degrees of information provided

Conclusions - Needs : * A more complete list of facilities * Unique, shared and long-lasting identifiers * A description with at least the spectral coverage and the link toward the agencies - Building blocks from the VO can be reused - Web pages from agencies already provide facility descriptions Publishers, astronomers, engineers and librarians of agencies are gathered here, so, let's talk !
