Global Aviation Global Aviation Issue 2/ October 2010 Page 1 Introduction Welcome on board this Global Aircraft. In this issue of the Global Aviation Magazine, we will take a look at the lovely French Côte d’Azur and we take a look at the future Global Fleet. Also this month’s featured aircraft, the Boeing 757-300. We wish you a pleasant flight. 3. Pittsburgh rediscovered 5. The Cô te d’Azur 7. The workhorse of the fleet: the 757-300 9. Probably one of the nicest cities in Pennsylvania. It lies at a river fork where the Allegheny River and the Monogahela River meet and form the Ohio River. In 2007 it was the most livable city in the US and now it sits on a third place. The city was previously one of the biggest metal industry capitals of the US, but most factories closed in the 1970’s, and Pittsburgh turned into a city that is not known very well, but surely is worth a weekend city trip. The ‘peninsula’ on which the city centre has been build, is full of nice parks and squares. It is often called “small-Manhattan” due to the similarity of the shape of the city centre. The city-centre consists mainly out of modern buildings, but it also has an old district which comes from the steel city time. Not only the centre is nice. To the south of the centre you will find Grandview Park, from which you will have a great view over the city. The top of Grandview Park can be reached by the Monogahela Incline, a funicular railway. Even further south you will find the district Mt Washington. A lot of money is currently being invested in this part of the city, and in a few years this will be the place to be. Restaurants For traditional American food go to Big Jim’s. Big steaks and good hamburgers can be found here. Of you prefer Italian food you should really go to Bruschetta’s. They have great pasta’s, and you can also create your own. If you want to eat high-class go to Eleven, a stylish restaurant with a contemporary kitchen. If you want to leave Pittsburgh for a day, go to Addresses: Wheeling, a town 50 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. It feels like you travel back 40 years ago if you go Big Jim’s, 201 Saline hear. The town used to be an important steel factory Street, (412) 421-0532 town. Now you can visit the old steel factories. Also there is an old suspension bridge from 1849, along Bruschetta’s, 1831 E with a museum outlining the history of this strangely Carson Street, (412) build town. 431-3535 Eleven, 1150 Smallman Street, (412) 201-5656 Page 4 Pittsburgh rediscovered Pittsburgh International Airport Pittsburgh International Airport was opened in 1940 as a military airport. In 1944 building started for a commercial airport. In 1952 it was opened and at the time even the largest of the United States. The first airlines to serve Pittsburgh were TWA and Capital Airlines (which later became part of United Airlines). TWA even flew transcontinental from Pittsburgh to Frankfurt and London. In 1985 British Airways started a regular flight to London with a stop in Philadelphia. In 1992 the new terminal opened and all traffic was transferred there. From 2009 on, Global Express Airways serves Pittsburgh with regular flights to Chicago, Houston and Memphis. Global Air International does not serve Pittsburgh. Global Express Airways also has a lounge at the airport, located at gate A 1. If you want to reach Pittsburgh from somewhere else, it is the easiest to transfer at Chicago O’ Hare International as of the many destinations served from O’ Hare. If you want to travel in even more style than with Global Express Airways you can choose to fly with Global Express Executive Charters, which fly anywhere you want. For more information please visit www.globalexpressair.com. Page 5 The Côte d’Azur The lovely French Riviera is probably the best place in Europe to spend a nice Autumn week. The lovely beaches, ports and towns are ideal for a week of rest. From the moment when you exit the airplane Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, you already smell the lovely sea salt, and the smell of flowers. We have listed in this article the nicest places to visit when going to the Côte. Nice Nice, the biggest city in the Côte, is a nice, but rather busy place to visit. The lovely beach along the Promenade des Anglais, or the lovely Place Massena are the tourists favorites. Less known is the port of Nice, which lies in between the rocks to the east of the city centre. The port is filled with artists selling their watercolor paintings and old women selling fresh fish. I the water there are many big yachts, along with small fishing boats, a very interesting combination. Another place worth visiting here is the Opera of Nice, located on the Promenade des Anglais. The opera directly faces the sea, and inside the opera house the ceiling are covered with magnificent frescoes. Cannes Cannes mainly famous because of the film festival. It attracts many people from all over the world. Cannes is a very nice town which mainly focuses on the high society of Europe, which can spend their money in the Louis Vuitton or Ralph Lauren shops which can be found on the seaside boulevard. When going to Cannes make sure to visit the Carlton Hotel, possibly one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. Entering the lobby feels like entering a palace. The old Page 6 The Côte d’Azur town centre is also very nice, and looks exactly like what you would expect from a Mediterranean town. You can smell the sea salt, and of course the soap which is being sold as souvenirs in the many touristic shops. Saint Tropez Saint Tropez is really the capital of the high society. The big yachts in the harbor, sometimes even with a helicopter on the deck, show this. Even though the town is rather small, it is very popular. The beautiful picturesque streets which lead to the small church with the yellow bell tower, or the fish market in the gangway on the way to the harbor, make the town worth to visit. When visiting Saint Tropez make sure you go to the old harbor, where you can find yachts the size of a football field, or tri-mast sailing boats. Also visit the Citadel, the fortress with a magnificent view over Saint Tropez. From there you can even see Port-Grimaud, a holiday village build as Venice. Page 7 The workhorse of the fleet: the 757-300 The Boeing 757-300 was introduced by Boeing as an aircraft to be used on short flight with high passenger counts. An example of the ideal usage of the 757-300 is the route London-Paris. Also the aircraft is used often by charter companies because of the low maintenance costs. Boeing was looking for an aircraft that fitted the job of carrying many people over short stretches, the 757-200 from 1983 was getting old and Boeing needed a replacement. A stretched version of the 757-200 was planned and the idea was to get 240 seats. The 757-300 was first presented at the Farnborough air show in 1996 as the 757-300X. The main difference between the 757-200 and -300 was the 7.11 meter longer fuselage. Also the cabin was modernized with larger overhead bins and vacuum toilets, as well as indirect lighting. The cockpit stayed the same as the -200. The 757-300 first flew on 2 August 1998, and first flew for Condor in March 1999. It flies for Global Air International since 2009, and mainly flies on flights with a flight time of maximum 5 hours. A Global Air International pilot needs to have flown 50 hours before he is allowed to fly the 757-300 to ensure a safe and comfortable flight with Global Air International. You can read more about the 757-300 on www.globalairinternational.com. Page 8 The workhorse of the fleet: the 757-300 Page 9 Pilot of the Month In this new returning article we focus on one pilot of either Global Air International or Global Express Air. We thank Global Express Pilot Tim Davis for this great idea. He is also our first pilot of the month. Your Full Name: Tim Davis (Timothy Scott Davis) Hometown: Indian Springs, NV (40 miles outside Las Vegas) Favorite sport and hobby: Bicycling – Aviation (via Flight Sim X) Favorite GAI or GEX destination: Anchorage, Alaska Favorite GAI or GEX aircraft and reason: Boeing 737-800. I have a lot of (FSX) flight time in 737’s, especially the 737-300 (FeelThere/Wilco Pilot in Command payware), so transitioning to the 800 series was fairly easy. I have a (Flight One) Cessna Citation Mustang which I love dearly and fly often on personal trips. When I started flying the 737-300, I never realized how “heavy” it feels until my first session in the FAA approved flight simulator at Pan American Flight Training Center, Las Vegas. Prior to joining GEX, I was flying (virtual) 737’s for Southwest and Delta (paint schemes in PIC). Why did you want to join GEX: I was just filling holes in the sky until my friend John Sponseller suggested I give GEX a try.

  • Marissa K. Munderloh Phd Thesis
The Emergence of Post-Hybrid Identities: a Comparative Analysis of National Identity Formations in Germany’s Contemporary Hip-Hop Culture Marissa Kristina Munderloh This thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of PhD at the University of St Andrews 3 October 2014 Abstract This thesis examines how hip-hop has become a meaningful cultural movement for contemporary artists in Hamburg and in Oldenburg. The comparative analysis is guided by a three-dimensional theoretical framework that considers the spatial, historical and social influences, which have shaped hip-hop music, dance, rap and graffiti art in the USA and subsequently in the two northern German cities. The research methods entail participant observation, semi-structured interviews and a close reading of hip-hop’s cultural texts in the form of videos, photographs and lyrics. The first chapter analyses the manifestation of hip-hop music in Hamburg. The second chapter looks at the local adaptation of hip-hop’s dance styles. The last two chapters on rap and graffiti art present a comparative analysis between the art forms’ appropriation in Hamburg and in Oldenburg. In comparing hip-hop’s four main elements and their practices in two distinct cities, this research project expands current German hip-hop scholarship beyond the common focus on rap, especially in terms of rap being a voice of the minority. It also offers insights into the ways in which artists express their local, regional or national identity as a culturally hybrid state, since hip-hop’s art forms have always been the result of cultural and artistic mixture.
