BRITISH and COMMONWEALTH CONCERTOS from the NINETEENTH CENTURY to the PRESENT Sir Edward Elgar
BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH CONCERTOS FROM THE NINETEENTH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT A Discography of CDs & LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Born in Broadheath, Worcestershire, Elgar was the son of a music shop owner and received only private musical instruction. Despite this he is arguably England’s greatest composer some of whose orchestral music has traveled around the world more than any of his compatriots. In addition to the Conceros, his 3 Symphonies and Enigma Variations are his other orchestral masterpieces. His many other works for orchestra, including the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Falstaff and Cockaigne Overture have been recorded numerous times. He was appointed Master of the King’s Musick in 1924. William Henry Squire's Out-Of-Print Works for Cello and Piano
PEZZOLI, GINA ANNALISE. D.M.A. William Henry Squire’s Out-of-Print Works for Cello and Piano: Analysis and Suggestions for Teachers (2011). Directed by Dr. Alexander Ezerman. 39 pp. This study presents a biographical overview of William Henry Squire’s life, performance, and teaching career and a pedagogical analysis of his out-of-print works for cello and piano. The study is organized into two main parts. The first reviews Squire’s career as a cellist and composer, with special emphasis on his performing and teaching careers. The second part consists of a detailed description of nine of Squire’s forgotten and out-of-print works for cello and piano. This section includes discussion of the technical and musical challenges of the works, most of which are completely unknown to cellists today. As with many of Squire’s better-known works, these pieces are excellent for intermediate-level cello students. The document is intended to be a teaching “menu” of sorts which details the attributes of each work; therefore the catalogue is organized by difficulty, not by opus number. The nine works chosen for this study are Squire’s Chant D’Amour , Gondoliera , Souvenir, Légende, Berceuse, Slumber Song/Entr’acte, Sérénade op. 15 , Gavotte Humoristique op. 6, and Meditation in C op. 25. Yorkshire & North East Branch Newsletter No
Yorkshire & North East Branch Newsletter No 20 - April 2021 Edited by Paul Kampen - [email protected] 74 Springfield Road, Baildon, Shipley, W.Yorks BD17 5LX 01274 581051 Branch Chairman’s message n view of the significance for Elgar of that delightful perennial, the anemone nemorosa, we can all take hope from our first sighting of the windflower, not only that spring has Iarrived but that the various restrictions which society has been forced to endure are gradually being lifted. As the politicians are fond of reminding us: it’s been a challenging year. Here at the Yorkshire & North East branch we have met the challenge in various ways. Most importantly, we have maintained our programme of talks, almost without interruption, by means of that technological miracle, the remote electronic platforms, especially Zoom. We took a degree of satisfaction in being the first branch to embrace the technology when, in May 2020, Christopher Wiltshire gave his trailblazing presentation, followed by Stuart Freed (June), Peter Newble (September, via Vimeo), Bernard Porter (November), and Steven Halls (March). We are extremely grateful to all these speakers not only for rising to the technological challenge but for such highly informative and enjoyable occasions, and we look forward to more on-line meetings in April, May and June. By the time of our scheduled meeting in September, we should be out of lockdown and back at our home, the Bar Convent, York. But this raises an important question: do we continue as before, as if nothing had happened, or do we learn from the experience and modify our operations? Let us not forget that Zoom meetings have attracted a wider audience than those at the Bar Convent. -

Thesis submitted for the award of M.Phil. to the Dublin Institute of Technology College of Arts and Tourism Supervisor: Dr Mark Fitzgerald Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama February 2018 i ABSTRACT Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, arrangements of Irish airs were popularly performed in Victorian drawing rooms and concert venues in both London and Dublin, the most notable publications being Thomas Moore’s collections of Irish Melodies with harmonisations by John Stephenson. Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song. -
The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide Audio Tape Guide
The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide By David Winter Version of 23 FEBRUARY 2014 This list contains all known EMI (His Master’s Voice and Columbia) tapes released between 1952 and the early 1960s. Any new version will contain minor fixes or updates, or unreleased titles. If you wish to contribute, please email me at [email protected] with good quality pictures showing what should be updated or added. Thank you. Change log: - New format, hopefully for better reading. Tape catalog prefixes, tape types and misc details: EMI issued their "tape records" under two brands: His Master's Voice (HMV) and Columbia (COL). They were all recorded in 2 channel format, either in mono (twin sided) or stereo (Stereosonic, single sided). They are always 7-inch reels playing at 7.5ips (or 19 centimeters per second). Only a few recordings have been made available both in mono and stereo. However, many titles have been recorded in either format by different performers. Some titles were eventually imported in America by RCA when the company was licenced to produce the equivalent LPs. The table below shows the four catalog codes used for each type of tape and by each brand. Later 4-track stereo tapes and 2-track "Twin Packs" are not included in this list. This guide is based on EMI's catalog of 1958 and may be missing titles released shortly after.
