I was 30 years old with a four-year-old who wanted more than anything to see this happening! Unfortunately, the clos- est we could get to see the eclipse was the TV because the path of the eclipse just barely crossed the United States. Washington, Oregon, Montana, North Dakota and a tiny tip of Idaho would experience total darkness and Texas would see very little. This time, again our part of the world will see only a partial eclipse, and that will be at its most covered around 1:15 in the afternoon of August 21st; making it all the more important that we understand the danger inherent in looking directly at the Sun and how to avoid causing damage to our eyes. The American Astronomical Soci- ety has revised some of its eyewear advice "in response to alarming reports of potentially unsafe eclipse viewers flooding the market." You should see a label marked ISO, indicating that the glasses have been certified by them as safe for viewing the eclipse. However, to be certain that they are correct, you should not be able to see any- thing but the Sun – nothing else. https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/how-make-solar-eclipse- sun-viewer Here is a link that will allow you to see how NASA suggests you make a box through which to view the eclipse. You will also find it on our website as an ac- tive link in this story. You might find it easier to purchase the glasses, which you can do on Amazon via our web- site – remember when you use our link, Texas city High School Band gets credit! – and you will get 5 for $12.95. So, what happens when you stare directly at the sun? Almost immediately, you begin to get a sunburn on your eyes. With enough damage…sunburn… to your retina, you can experience partial blindness. At best, you will probably increase your chances of acquiring macular Did you know eclipses come in pairs? The lunar degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.
